I was going to start a thread about gasoline prices, then did a search and found this thread already in existence, so thought that I'd resurrect it.
With the 4th of July holiday approaching, I was wondering about the price of a gallon of gasoline in everyone's respective areas.
Around here, it's $2.68 per gallon at most locations. This evening, filled the two gas cans for the lawn mower, and topped up the tank of our vehicle, to the tune of a total of $52.

Gas Pump Prices Highest Ever For This Time Of Year
Since Jan. 1, Pump Prices Averaged Well Above $3 Per Gallon
Chris Kahn, AP Energy Writer
Posted: Friday, February 11, 2011
Updated: 11:09 pm CST February 11, 2011
New York -- U.S. gasoline prices have jumped to the highest levels ever for the middle of February. The national average hit $3.127 per gallon on Friday, about 50 cents above a year ago. The price is about 6 percent higher than on this date in 2008. The next day, pump prices began a string of 32 gains over 34 days. They rose 39 percent over five months, eventually hitting an all-time high of $4.11 per gallon in July.
Although gas prices are expected to rise, most experts aren't expecting a reprise of 2008, when the price spike forced many drivers to join car pools and trade in gas-guzzling SUVs for fuel-efficient cars. "It would be a mistake to think we're going to have that all over again," said OPIS chief oil analyst Tom Kloza. He says oil demand will slide in the U.S. by May, as refineries slow fuel production while they switch to summer blends of gas. World oil consumption also may not rise as much as expected.
And Kloza contends that oil traders are more cautious now, after getting burned when oil plunged to $33 per barrel in early 2009, just six months after hitting $147 per barrel. Even the most bullish traders no longer think they can chase commodity prices higher without risk, he says. Still, Kloza expects gas to reach $3.50 to $3.75 per gallon this spring because of the usual run-up in prices ahead of the summer driving season. That would mean an increase of 12 to 20 percent from the current level.
Gasoline climbed almost 10 percent since November as oil prices rose because of factors including stronger demand from China, a frigid winter in the U.S. and tension in Egypt, Kloza said. The price of Brent crude, a key oil contract that also influences U.S. gasoline prices, hit $100 per barrel in January for the first time since 2008. "It was a perfect storm," said Kloza.
Oil prices retreated Friday after Egypt's President Hosni Mubarak handed over power to the military and left Cairo. Benchmark West Texas Intermediate crude for March delivery fell $1.15 to settle at $85.58 a barrel on the New York Mercantile Exchange. That's lower than the price on Jan. 25, when the demonstrations in Egypt began.
Investors have been concerned that the anti-government protests over the past 18 days could spread to other parts of the Middle East and disrupt oil supplies. Now that Mubarak has stepped down, the military says it will oversee a democratic transition to a new government. "The market is getting whipsawed," oil analyst Stephen Schork said. "Everyone is playing the card that stability in Egypt is good for oil" shipments.
In other Nymex trading for March contracts, heating oil fell 1.49 cents to settle at $2.6958 per gallon and gasoline lost less than a penny to settle at $2.4652 per gallon. Natural gas lost 7.6 cents to settle at $3.910 per 1,000 cubic feet. In London, Brent crude fell 50 cents to settle at $100.94 a barrel on the ICE Futures Exchange.

I can't find it for less than $3.55. On Saturday, I went to a Marathon station and got it for 0.10 off per gallon with a rare care wash for me (I usually do my own washing when we get out of the frozen weather).
Of course, the next morning I had to drive through slushy, salted/dirty snow (new snowfall) and the car is dirty again!
The US economy is going to tank big-time if gas prices get much higher. Idiotic economists say that people should cut down on consumption. That's so idiotic as far as 1) People still need to drive to work, school, etc. and there's nothing to be cut there and 2) Alternate-energy vehicles are still WAY too expensive for most folks.

Gas At $4 In Nation's Capital, 5 States
NY Likely To Hit $4 Mark Next Week
The Associated Press
Posted: Saturday, April 16, 2011
Updated: 12:07 pm CDT April 16, 2011
Carlos Barria/Reuters
New York -- Drivers in Washington, D.C., on Saturday joined motorists in five states who are paying more than $4 per gallon for gasoline. The average price for gas in New York could top $4 by early next week. Hawaii, Alaska, California, Illinois and Connecticut already have pump prices above that mark, according to AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge. Hawaii has the highest price in the U.S. at $4.47 per gallon.
The national average for gas has increased for 25 straight days, and is now $3.82 per gallon. Retail surveys suggest motorists are reacting to higher prices now by buying less fuel. Still, the government expects pump prices to keep climbing this summer as vacationers take to the highways. The average price of gas rose to $4.003 per gallon in the nation's capital Saturday. The New York average is $3.996.
For American drivers, the $4 mark harkens back to the summer of 2008, when oil rose to $147 per barrel and gas prices topped out at $4.11 per gallon before the economy went into a tailspin. The rapid increase at the pump follows a parallel rise in oil. Since Labor Day, oil has risen 48 percent and U.S. gas prices have gone up 42 percent. The increases gained momentum in Mid-February when a popular rebellion built in Libya, eventually turning violent and shutting down the country's exports. Crude has jumped 30 percent since then, with gas prices gaining 22 percent.

Gas Prices Headed Downward, Survey Finds
Average Price Drops 17 Cents In 3 Weeks
By the CNN Wire Staff
Posted: Sunday, June 12, 2011
Updated: 2:17 pm CDT June 12, 2011
Carlos Barria/Reuters
(CNN) -- The average per-gallon gas price in the United States has dropped nearly 17 cents in the past three weeks, and likely will continue to drop further, according to a survey published Sunday. The Lundberg Survey found the average price of a gallon of self-serve regular gasoline as of Friday was $3.74. Prices so far this year peaked on May 6, when the price hit $4 per gallon nationwide -- just 11 cents shy of the all-time record set in July 2008. On May 20, the last survey conducted, the price was $3.90. That means there has been a drop of nearly 26 cents per gallon over the past five weeks. "There's a very good chance that pump prices will continue down, because there is an oversupply of gasoline at a time when our demand is weakening from unemployment conditions," as well as reports of a possible output hike from Saudi Arabia, said publisher Trilby Lundberg.
The crude oil price is below $100 per barrel, she said. The closing price on June 10 was $99.29. But Lundberg said she believes that even without increased output from Saudi Arabia, "we will still see lower prices at the pump, because supply is high and demand is weak ... There's a very good chance it will continue falling." However, the current price is about a dollar higher than a year ago, as are diesel prices, she said. The drop would likely have been greater, she said, but for increasing ethanol prices. Within the selection of cities updated, the highest average price was found in Chicago, at $4.29 a gallon. The lowest was Jackson, Mississippi, at $3.41.
Here are the average prices in some other cities:
- Charleston, South Carolina $3.49
- Albuquerque, New Mexico $3.55
- Denver $3.63
- Atlanta $3.66
- Philadelphia $3.77
- Los Angeles $3.93
- Boston $3.84

Oil Prices Gushing: 20% Surge In 6 Weeks
Posted: November 14, 2011 Updated: 3:02 pm CST November 14, 2011
New York (CNNMoney) -- Americans reeling from all the grim economic news lately can add one more item to the list -- surging oil prices. Analysts say the recent rally that's sent U.S. crude prices up 20% since the start of October has been driven by a broad range of factors, from a weaker dollar to an easing supply glut and ongoing tension in the Middle East.
And if that continues, it could add up to a greater burden for drivers, in the form of higher gas prices. The U.S. Energy Information Administration said last month that U.S. prices would average $3.52 per gallon this year before dropping to $3.43 in 2012. But that all could change if oil continues to trend higher.
U.S. crude prices are within spitting distance of $100 a barrel -- a level not seen since mid-July, when the national average for a gallon of gas was around $3.69, according to motorist group AAA. Stephen Schork, publisher of the industry newsletter The Schork Report, said if the rally in U.S. crude really takes off, gas prices could top $4 -- a level not seen since July 2008, when prices hit a record high of $4.114.
"There's a lot of things going on here," said Phil Flynn, senior market analyst at PFG Best. The dollar has weakened and emerging market demand, particularly from South America, has strengthened, Flynn said. At the same time, U.S. crude supplies have been tightening. A weaker dollar typically signals a rise in oil prices, since the exchange rate gives foreign countries a boost in the purchasing power of their currencies.
On the supply side, the main U.S. trading hub in Cushing, Okla., which houses the oil to which U.S. West Texas Intermediate (WTI) prices are pegged, experienced a bottleneck earlier this year that led to an accumulation of oil at the site. That situation has eased over the past few weeks, analysts say, contributing to the price rise. "It was just a temporary situation," said Peter Beutel, an oil analyst with Cameron Hanover. "It doesn't look like it's ever likely to occur again."
Further construction is planned around Cushing that analysts say should improve its transportation infrastructure and reduce the chance of future gluts from occurring. Schork said price increases are also being driven by short sellers who are getting pushed out of the market and forced to cover their trades. In addition, an unusually large gap between the prices of WTI and Brent crude, the European benchmark, is now closing, he said.
Brent and WTI prices have historically tracked within just a few dollars of each other, but this year they've been separated by a wide gap. In September, that gap stretched to a whopping $25. That happened in part because, while the glut in Oklahoma led to an oversupply of WTI, production in Europe's North Sea dropped sharply and the Libyan industry was disrupted by civil war. Those events helped push Brent prices above $125 a barrel in April.
At this point, however, Beutel said there is no reason for such a large price gap, and he would be "shocked" if it doesn't narrow to less than $5 by the spring. Brent traded around $112 a barrel Monday and has climbed less steeply than WTI over the past few weeks. In early October, Brent was trading around $104 a barrel. "The WTI certainly has a lot more room to go higher than the Brent does, " Beutel said.
To add to all this, recent concerns that hostilities may break out between Israel and Iran and disrupt Middle Eastern oil production are also driving up prices globally, said Jim Ritterbusch, president of oil trading advisory firm Ritterbusch and Associates. But the biggest question for oil prices still remains one of demand, especially in light of the ongoing European debt crisis, which could still spiral out of control.
Production gains in the North Sea and Libya, along with a revival of the Iraqi oil industry will mean little if the European crisis drags the global economy with it. "It will all hinge on the eurozone," Ritterbusch said. "If you could tell me where the euro currency is going to be a month or two down the road, I could tell you where oil prices will be."
