View Full Version : What do you think Made All in the Family slightly Better than Sanford and Son?

All in the Family edged out Sanford and Son in the Ratings for 3 seasons in a row with S&S Being #2. So do you think S&S never could take the #1 spot from All in the Family because the show was mainly geared toward men? Meaning that Fred was never married and shared the house with his son so basically making it a man's type of show. What do you think?

All in the Family dealt with the topics of it's time and S&S didn't. Plus AITF had more drama and it kept people glued to their TV's. S&S was more slapstick comedy. JMO

Off topic.....
I was watching the first episode of S&S last night, and Lamont was a tab abusive to Fred

All In the Family was innovative and had already established itself as the #1 rated show. So as great and ground breaking as Sanford and Son was in it's own right, it couldn't knock AITF off it's throne. It probably would have if it came out first.

Well that because American Viewers only had 3 Options during primetime in those years-lol Here is an example of a Number 1 and 2 show 30 years later

2002-2003
CSI-16.3
Friends-13.9

I think All in the Family had more types of people tuning in than sanford & son. People could just relate to it more.

If a show got a rating like AITF or S & S now, the networks would have a heart attack. LOL

I liked both shows equally, although AITF was a tad more funnier at times than S&S. Both shows were so different from each other.

No, AITF was more adult funny, S&S was funny but not like AITF. Too me S&S was great from seasons 1-3 and some of 4 after that it was just stupid crap that they were writing.

No I'm saying that my 12 yr cousin would find it funny, but he finds S&S funny because of Fred fake heart attacks and his silliness. It's just different. When I was 11 and 12 I watched reruns of S&S on a local channel all the time. But I couldn't sit through AITF because I didnt know what they were talking about half the time. It's just different comedy.

OK I get you now, S&S didn't appeal to certain age groups due to it's slapstick

Or just maybe not everyone liked S&S, just because it's on and you like it doesn't mean that everyone does.

Brieanna, I asked the Question because both shows were neck and neck for 4 straight seasons. So I know every show is not for everyone I was just seeing if smeone could tell me why they likes AITF better S&S. Now I wouldn't compare AITF to Mary Tyler Moore or Maude because those Two shows were not as close to overtaking AITF for the #1 spot as S&S was

You treating me like BobbyF treats you-lol

How? I gave you my opinion and there it is. And I'm no way in any shape or form like Bobby F. I'm just answering your question and giving you my opinion and I'm not being smart about it.

I was just making it clear that the post wasn't about my like for either show, i wanted to start a discussion on why AITF always edged out S&S in the 70's

My family watched AITF over S&S because we only got CBS on the tv and it was in black and white until january 1976

I much preferred Sanford and Son over All in the Family. Sanford and Son was a much better show, in my opinion.

All In the Family brilliantly combined comedy and drama and it had one of the most memorable cast of characters ever. I haven't seen a great deal of Sandford & Son but from what I have seen it didn't have the dramatic elements that All In the Family had.

Dramedy was big in the 70s. But I liked S&S better because of the fact that it was slapstick and never tried to preach or take its self seriously.

Although I preferred S&S for the humor and sometimes slaapstick humor overall, AitF had more serious issues than what S&S had at the time.

Ditto!! I always prefered S&S and Good Times over AITF and Maude, anyway.
