If The Monkees count, they started off as a fictional band in a TV show that became a band in real life. That's why they didn't play their own music, because they were technically actors playing characters in a band. I'm a big fan of both the show and their music.

The Partridge Family of course and also WAY/ NO WAY... Ross and Chandler's band in college
On WKRP they had a fictional band called SCUM, who preformed at a concert.
That was a pretty good episode too.
