My favourite is the crime drama Scarface ('83).
Aside from both "Godfather" movies and "Dog Day Afternoon," one of my faves is "Author Author."

When pacino did an interview on the actors studio they talked alot about the godfather movies and waited till the end to talk about Scarface but when they did, the mention of that movie got the biggest applause, so I think Scarface was probably not only his biggest hit but liked by more people.

My top 5 faves:
5. Insider - The main reason I have this movie on this list is because how surprised I was at the level of enjoyment I got from this flick. I found myself totally engaged by the story & by what the characters were trying to accomplish. These "trying to reveal the truth" type of movies usually don't grab me as sternly as this one did ( at least, not without having to resort to creative liberties a la JFK). Seeing Al Pacino's face NOT screaming from out the screen, but instead playing a role which required a more subtle approach and yet still have a solid presence (especially when standing next to Russell Crowe) reminded me why Al is truly an actor from the heart, in every sense. A great actor in a great movie by a great director ( Michael Mann).
4. Donnie Brasco - Al Pacino in the mob, but this time, on the opposite side of the heirarchy. A low-level aging hitman who can't get no respect. One of the few times Al gets to expand his acting muscles as opposed to just flexing 'em with a loud performance, which, though he's good at, has sorta become his standard.
3. Heat - Al Pacino having a cup of coffee with Robert DeNiro.
Nuff said.
2. Glengarry Glenn Ross - Yet another surprise for me. This time Al is just one part of an ensemble cast that seem to all have their acting knobs turned on high.
In the midst of a cache of strong performances, Pacino seems to really shine as a ruthless real esate salesman that spews pitches with an almost Shakespearian venom. And only a really good actor can cause me to spew forth a sentence like that.
1.Dog Day Afternoon - I love LOVE this movie. The tension & diasterous desperation of this movie begins & ends with Al's depiction of John Wojtowicz. Watching him trying to salvage the failed robbery attempt, you can just feel the downhill fatal end result oozing out of Pacino's character before it ever occurs. For me, this is the real start of Al's explosive charisma that's he's become famous for.
