This segment was recently posted on YouTube. Here is the segment as it was reported on Unsolved Mysteries.

On 17 March 1983, A father and son witness a large aircraft hover above their house in the Hudson Valley area of New York. The craft moved slowly, made little noise and hovered around the area for around 20 minutes. Nearby, on Interstate 84, traffic stopped as the object moved overhead.

Exactly one week later, 24th March, a police officer on radar check saw another craft come from behind the trees, moving slowly, making little to no noise. The craft hovered above the police car. As the object hovered above the officers car, reports began coming in through the police intercom of an object hovering in the distance. The object began moving shortly after and the police officer followed the object until in went away.

At the same time, 10 miles away, Ed Burns, former IBM Vice President is driving home along Taconic State Parkway when his radio picks up static out of nowhere. He then looked up and saw the object, which he described as being triangular in shape, and as long as a football field. The object made no noise. He then pulled over to the side of the road where a group of people were staring at the object dumbfoundedly. Witnesses reported that the object was moving north over the Hudson River Valley.

That night, at the Yorktown Police Station, An officer who had seen the lights had arrived at the station to report what he saw. Another officer was waiting outside for him. When he arrived, the object reappeared from the north. Despite the 2 officers standing side-by-side watching the object, their observations are different. One of the officers claimed that he saw 1 object with a number of small lights, while the other officer claims he saw a group of lights flying in a V formation. They initially made no noise.

It was later stated that the sightings were a hoax, nothing more than a group of planes flying in precise percision, however this claim was refuted after more and more sightings were reported as time went on. Some people reported seeing different things, for example, One week they would see a single object, another week they would see a group of lights flying in formation.

The object was actually filmed in July 1984. This clip apparently shows what many believe is a squadron of military aircraft. The man who filmed the clip claims he can hear the engines running. The night the clip was filmed, people rang in and claimed to have seen a group of planes flying together, no calls were made about people claiming to have seen a UFO that night.

Upon preparing for this story, Unsolved Mysteries asked the alleged hoaxers to recreate their flight patterns during daylight hours. Nobody was willing to be publicly identified. This could be because when flown at night, some of the maneouvres violate FAA regulations. Most of the formation flights happened on Thursday nights, but less than 1 third of all the UFO sightings occured on Thursday nights.
