I say ASAP because I'm handing my applications in tomorrow and so any input after that can't even be considered -_- Okay, so first I'll say what I feel about it. I don't know if it's too philosphically lame or what. I feel like there's no specific topic but I'm just going on and on. It doesn't feel like a standard essay, with an intro, body and conclusion. It's just all there. I don't know what to think about that, if it's good or bad. Blah. So here it is. Don't be afraid to tell me if it's totally lame. I might feel like a complete loser but at least I'll have the chance of putting together a better essay.

From the time we are born until the time we die is considered to be only a mere second in the realm of the entire universe. Many often wonder how much a life so short can mean. The surprising truth, however, is that so much can happen in that time, whether or not it is just a mere spark in history. Growing up is perhaps the most difficult and complicated feat one can ever experience in their lifetime. It goes by so quickly that we have little time to sit back and plan our next step but only time to live it as we experience it. As a child you’re free, whizzing through life on your tricycle and defining it with crayons. College is so far away it is a fantasy world among Cinderella and Snow White. But, it came faster than I could ever have imagined and living one day after another as it came and letting my experiences guide me helped me to reach the place in life where I am now. The experiences in our lives directly effect who we eventually become.

People are lucky to have so many ways of coping with the stress in their daily lives. Adults look to exercising or other hobbies. But when a significant amount of stress plagues a young child, we use much simpler techniques. The one I chose was laughter and I owe so much respect to anything related to comedy because it makes us all realize that our blunders, faults, troubles and fears, are just as silly as worrying about them. From that I learned to laugh through life, not cry.

The life I lived as a young child seemed normal enough; a family that loved me and vacations to Disney World. However, I also had a dysfunctional family involving arguments and hardship not even adults should be subject to. When somebody is five years old and waking up in the middle of the night to a fight between the two people that care about you most in the world, it certainly is not enlightening. I cried and feared it whenever it occurred. By the time I had reached my teen years it had become a burden, not something to fear. I learned through that experience to not make the same mistakes and that what doesn’t kill us only makes us stronger. Certainly, in my case, it has.

Finally, the gift of writing has always given me the chance to take life and twist it around so that people can see it in ways they had never seen it before. Or, my personal favorite, to make them laugh through that writing and realize that maybe that last mistake they made wasn’t such a big deal after all. Creating stories filled with different worlds opens people’s eyes to the true “magic” of life, which isn’t magic at all but real. That is why it is so amazing.

Through all of the experiences I have had, mistakes I have made and people I have met, I have learned that life is the most complicated thing someone may experience, and at the same time so simple. Simply put, what it all comes down to is that we really are all human, as familiar a phrase as that may sound. We all want to live and to be happy. That is why there are doctors to keep us healthy, police officers to keep us safe and teachers to let us learn about the world we live in. As the late John Ritter said, there is a “golden thread that intertwines all of us together…and it either makes you laugh or it makes you cry...that’s what an artist can do, that someone, anyone, could do if they’re willing to pluck that.” That’s what writing can do and that is what I plan on doing from all that I have learned. These lifetimes, my lifetime, aren’t mere sparks in history; they are explosions.

This is really good, Ashlee :) I love how you ended it with the John Ritter quote (which fits in with your theme about life and laughter in the piece you wrote).

Thanks :) I felt I needed to end it with a quote and his was perfect. A little tribute to an actor who's meant so much to me.

Thanks, Joe. Yeah, I guess you're right. I'm way too critical of it because I'm so nervous
