Harry Potter - Am I the Only One?....

Am I the only person on this entire planet who does not get what all the craze for Harry Potter is about? For God's sake, it's just a book, and one with a stupid plot line in my opinion. Seriously, am I the only one that thinks Harry Potter is just completely stupid?

Hmmm...obviously. And it's obvious that you really haven't read the books, you'd know that it's much more than just one "stupid" plot line.

Geez, you don't have to be so defensive. Did you forget to have your coffee this morning or something? It's just my opinion, lighten up! And my opinion is that it is a stupid book, period! I tried reading the book and it was terrible. Sorry, that's the way I feel.

Sorry if I sounded a bit snooty in that last post. You DID say it was opinion that Harry Potter has only one "stupid" plot line( Which I really REALLY disagree with).

You know, I was just like you once. During the summer of 2000, when the fist gist of Harry Potter mania hit with the release of Goblet of Fire(Book 4), I thought it was quite pathetic. Everywhere you looked, there he was. I think I was too busy going to the movies, and watching Survivor to give it a chance. "Oh, it's just another Pokemon".

That's how it was until last Christmas, when my Aunt bought me the first book. When I opened it, I gave her sort of a forced smile(more like a cringe) and set it off to the side.
I finally picked it up a few days later when I was really bored. I started reading, becoming more and more involved as I went along. Until I was hooked. Ran out to buy the second one, and then the third, then the forth. The rest is history. Now I'm quite a fan.

So, you know, even the most cynical person(like myself) can be wrapped up in a so-called "children's book". I wouldn't be ashamed to say that Harry Potter is this generation's Star Wars. I wouldn't be at all.

Like I said, it's just me. Personally, I hate reading all together, so that is one of the reasons I have that opinion. And those kind of books are just way too out there for me. I'm not into fiction books.

My reply has nothing to do with Harry Potter. It has to do with expressing ones' opinion when they have nothing in which to base that opinion on. Never mind the Potter books. You said, "I'm not into fiction books." You said I hate reading all together." or something close to that. Do you know that fiction books are much more then just books of fantasy? Do you know that fiction books entail virtually every subject that you could ever think of? Why would you express an opinion about something without knowing anything about it?

Sorry about the "Hmmm, obviously thing". I wasn't sure if you had read the books, and you just blantantly called it stupid. Being a fan, and knowing those books are MUCH MORE than just a lousy plot line(which there isn't), I took offense to that.

But kittflynn, rather bluntly, pointed out that your basis of opinion is sort of...for lack of a better word, lame. Really, I can't think of a better word to put it more nicely.

That's too bad that you don't like reading. I mean, I should expect that. You are at a sitcoms site. Television is almost the exact opposite of books. Funny, or ironic, that Harry Potter is regarded as the book that has steered kids away from television and video games. A major feat, yes. Goosebumps, it is not.

Harry Potter doesn't interest me at all. I don't know why, but it just doesn't. Nevertheless, I want to see the movie because I heard that the special FX are really good.

I agree with you! I mean, yeah, ok, they're good books...but come on! That is all they are - books. Made up characters. What's the big deal? The world wont end without Harry Potter you know!

Well when the first book came out- I forgot what year it was but anyways, my cousin bought it, and became obsessed. I felt the same way- EVERYWHERE you looked there he was. Finally my cousin gave me the book to read. She said "Just give it a chance" So I read it. By the 7th chapter I was hooked on it. But still today, everywhere you look he is there. Even on the damned Coke bottles. Where he is, that cool Santa should be, LOL.

I really like harry potter but I really don't know why theyre making such a big deal out of this new movie. the books always turn out better than the movie anyway. everywhere you look theres harry potter. but i haven't seen the movie yet... the books are really well written though and once you start reading them, you can't put them down. ok sry im just rambling cuz im bored sooo...

I haven't read the books even though I want to so then maybe I can see why people make such a big deal about it but then I can't judge because I've never read the books.Your not the only one who doesn't like the books I know some people at my school who hate Harry Potter (and the movie too).

The world won't end without a lot of things you know. Some people love Harry Potter, some don't. But right now, in this moment of time, it's a big deal. So you're telling me that selling over 115 million copies worldwide and with a record opening weekend gross isn't a big deal? I mean, you gys are making this out to be Pokemon, when it's clearly not. And all of you can admit there has to be SOMETHING about Potter that has struck a chord with millions of people.
Yes, the media has somewhat exploited the property, but so what? At least it's quality stuff. Rather than something that is truly of less quality(Goosebumps for example on the books front, and Episode I on the film front).

And the movie IS good, by the way. Of course not as good as the book, but that was expected. Much much better than the drivel "blockbusters" that has been released over the last couple of years.

I respect everyone who had a substantial base of opinion. (Like the people who've read the books, or have seen the film), but
like most of you, I know a lot of people who "hate" Harry Potter. And I bet that more than 95 percent haven't even read the first page.
Funny, I haven't met one person who HAS read the books and didn't like them.

Well, now I can understand, knowing that you live in England. Just to think how big it is here in America, I can only imagine how huge it is over in Britain. I think it was Bootsy( a fellow member) who jokingly said, "Harry Potter is the biggest thing to come out of Britain since The Beatles."
Kinda crazy, that's almost true.
It's not everything to me, but I sure do like it a lot(you probably guessed that already...).
Anyway, I can understand how you could be annoyed by the whole thing...
