I think it's ridiculous how news sources are making such a huge deal out of this. She was very obviously joking. Faith has been in the recording business for 13 years, she knows how the game is played. She has lost awards before, and didn't react poorly. I'm sure she knew she didn't have much of a chance at a win last night, anyway. No one is that over the top, except perhaps Kanye West.

I like Carrie Underwood and I don't really like Faith Hill, so I am pretty happy with the way things went.

I love Carrie, but I am definitely not happy with how things went. This was SO Sara's year to win. Carrie totally deserved the Horizon award, but she has not accomplished enough to win an award as prestigious as the Female Vocalist. It definitely is better than Gretchen Wilson winning, though.

Why was Faith Hill nominated for a country music award?? She's been a pop singer for years.

LOL, exactly, when was the last time Faith Hill did a country song?
In Tim McGraw's (very excellent) song "Back When", he complains that "...I'm readin' 'Street Slang for Dummies' 'cause they put 'pop' in my country...."
He ought to talk to his wife about that...she started it all...
In reality, they're ALL pop stars now...Gretchen Wilson might be the closest thing to a country singer from the nominees, but she's not as good a singer as some of the others.
Carrie is all pop...but that's ok, that's where country music has been heading for some time...

Actually, Faith's Fireflies album pretty much returned her to her country roots, and she had quite a successful year at country radio. This is why she received the nomination. She also didn't start the country/pop crossover.

I've seen some articles saying that Faith was only joking, and she later apologized to Carrie.

I'm sorry but of course she's going to say she was joking whether she was or not. I mean if it was a genuine reaction she couldn't really admit it without making herself look even worse.

Hill's joke misunderstood, stars say
Several country stars are rallying to the defense of Faith Hill, whose on-camera antics during Monday's Country Music Association Awards have created a national stir.
As Carrie Underwood's name was announced as the winner of the female vocalist award, Hill looked at the camera, raised her hands, said, "What?" and then turned away. She issued a statement on Tuesday that said she had been joking.
"I've seen the tape, and just because I know Faith, it is obvious to me that she was just clowning around," said her close friend Martina McBride, also a female vocalist nominee. "I am sure looking back on it —I can't put words in her mouth — it was something she obviously didn't think through. It was off the cuff, and she was just having fun. She didn't ever think it was going to be blown this far out of proportion.
"I can tell you that there is nothing in her that expected to win that award and was disappointed," McBride said. "That is not Faith Hill. I do know that it wasn't mean-spirited and it wasn't some kind of diva moment.
"I just talked to Faith, and she is just torn up about this, that people would think that she did something maliciously," she said. "It goes against the person that she is."
McBride said Hill wasn't aware that her joke had been misinterpreted until she returned to the dressing room. "Everybody was like, 'Uh, did you know the camera was on you?' ... I actually believe it
was a naive mistake. She just didn't think it would come off the way that people are perceiving that it came off. It didn't translate across the television in the way in which she meant it."
After Hill returned home Monday night, McBride spoke to her on the phone. "When I went backstage after the show, it was a buzz. People were talking about it. That is when I called her. Of course, she wasn't aware of any of that. She said, 'You're kidding me! I was just clowning around for the camera. I had no idea.' "
Hill and Carrie Underwood had no comment on Wednesday. Underwood's publicist, Jessie Schmidt, said it was important to Hill to tell Underwood directly that it was a joke, and everything was cleared up with a phone call, during which time Hill congratulated her. "When she hung up the phone, Carrie said, 'Tim and Faith just went up two notches in my book. How great of them to call me immediately,'" said Schmidt. She said Underwood was not upset about the joke because Hill reached out to her immediately and directly.
She said Underwood has been too full of joy about winning two CMA awards to give the situation much thought. In addition, it was announced on Wednesday that her debut album had been certified quadruple platinum, making her the only female solo artist since Gretchen Wilson in the last decade to have a debut album sell 4 million copies.
Sara Evans, who was also nominated for female vocalist, said, "I was in the dressing room with Faith after the category was announced. She was totally joking ... just being funny. She is the sweetest person and would never do something like that. She was not upset that Carrie won and, in fact, was very happy for her."
The other female vocalist nominee, Gretchen Wilson, said, "Faith was probably being pulled and pushed in 10 different directions. It is preposterous for anyone to assume they know what was happening at that moment."
Kenny Chesney said, "I've known Faith and been friends with her for more than a decade, and I can tell you there's not a malicious or jealous bone in her body. She is one of the sweetest souls I know. To think Faith would be disrespectful in that way is a joke, which is what it was in the first place, a joke."
Big Kenny of Big & Rich said, "I consider her to be of the highest conscience and moral ethic. She is a good person, a real good person, with a wonderful sense of humor and kindness. We can't let something like this moment, taken completely out of the context due to the miracles of television, be placed at a higher level of importance than celebrating the artistry of our town. I guess John (Rich) and I should start issuing disclaimers before we goof around. Of course, in our case, it wouldn't help."
McBride said that Hill is one of the most supportive entertainers of other singers, both superstars and new acts, in country music.
"She sent me flowers the day of the show wishing me luck," McBride said.
McBride said that she was unaware that the camera was on her, too, during the announcement. "I didn't know I was on a split screen on TV," she said.
"Usually, they bring the camera there on all the nominees so that when they announce the winner, they will have a camera on whoever wins. You think they are just on the person who is onstage reading the announcement. Obviously, any time there is a camera on you, you should assume that it is on."
"The thing that is so shocking is that you are in this business for so long and you give interviews and you think people know who you are. All of a sudden people assume the worst about you because of some innocent, naive goofing-around thing you did backstage.
"The fact that people can know about you and then change their minds on the basis of two seconds of television that is misinterpreted is scary," she said. "It can happen to any of us."

Good point, I was thinking the same thing. Truth is, nobody besides her will ever know for sure whether it was just a joke or not. We can speculate, but that's all it is, speculation. Regardless of whether it was her real reaction or not, it personally doesn't change my opinion about her one bit. I still think she's hot, and that she's a damn good singer!!

The artists know and I think we all know pretty much when one is up for an award and your name is being announced, the cameras are ON YOU. How many awards show have we seen where the cameras REMAIN ON THE NOMINEE until the award is given? Countless of them. So, in her defense, I believe she was joking, she is not going to react like that knowing the cameras are on her, why else would she be "looking into the camera" when she mouthed WHAT??? Completely blown out of proportion. Celebs are used to the fact that the camera remains on them, which is why you never see any celeb making a "face" or anything that remotely appears to be "sour grapes". They all smile and applause because they know they are "being watched".

Yeah, even though it did look funny, the more I saw it, the more I agree she was joking around... I've been at dinners at which awards are given out, and one of my friends or I will joke around, making a motion like we're about to be called up (even though none of us are 'up' for anything) and then when they don't call our name, we'll act shocked... helps pass the time!
Country music artists are usually pretty good friends with each other (other than Toby Keith and the Dixie Chicks, that is)... they all appreciate each other's talent, and are happy when someone else wins an award, because they're all friends... I don't think there's a whole lot of jealousy among the performers themselves...
What made her reaction funnier is that Carrie Underwood won, so people who really didn't know better might think that there was jealousy at the newcomer.
But I agree... it had to be a joke, especially since, as Irene pointed out, Faith knew the camera was on her.

Did anyone that is complaining actually watch what Faith Hill did right before they announced the winner? She looked like she kinda bit her lip and looked all around. She knew the cameras were on her. She was playing it up. I do think that she was kidding around. I like Faith and love Carrie. She is my best friends cousin, but I do think Faith was kidding around......

Carrie. I didn't make the connection until recently. His last name in Underwood, but didn't think anything of it. We were talking recently and I happened to joke with him saying "So is Carrie Underwood related to you?" He smiled and said "Yes, she is my cousin." You could have blown me away with a feather.....
