Neil Patrick Harris is gay – and wants to quell recent reports that he had denied it. The actor tells PEOPLE exclusively:
"The public eye has always been kind to me, and until recently I have been able to live a pretty normal life. Now it seems there is speculation and interest in my private life and relationships.
"So, rather than ignore those who choose to publish their opinions without actually talking to me, I am happy to dispel any rumors or misconceptions and am quite proud to say that I am a very content gay man living my life to the fullest and feel most fortunate to be working with wonderful people in the business I love."
Harris, 33, currently stars in the CBS comedy How I Met Your Mother. He shot to fame in 1989 at age 16 when he played a teen-prodigy doctor on the hit Doogie Howser, M.D. "It was a very fast but wonderful education," he told PEOPLE in 1998.
After the show went off the air in 1993, he shook off his teen image with roles in the musicals Rent and Assassins and a wild turn as an unhinged version himself in the 2004 movie Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle.
"I'm enjoying my 30s," he told PEOPLE in 2004. "I feel like I know where I'm going. And I like where I'm going."

I guess I was blind because I didn't see it coming either. Maybe it's because of his character on HIMYM.

I can't say that I'm surprised...but I also can't say that it makes any difference to me....I've always liked him and thought him more talented than he gets credit for. He doesn't seem to care about flucuations and frivolity with his popularity...he just keeps on working...and I respect him immensely for that!

All I have to say is, congratulations, Neil Patrick Harris! Coming out takes guts and isn't exactly the easiest thing to do, especially when you are in the Hollywood spotlight. Our Doogie should be commended for his bravery and for his willingness to come out of the closet and be himself.
Tonight, on a very special Doogie Howser...

Apparently it's going to be a hard sell on "How I Met.." (huhhh, I said hard) of him being a womanizer.
He can always console himself at a Jersey reststop though.
I kid, because I care.

Why would it be a hard sell? He's been doing just fine so far? What's changed?

He has come out as a gay man, how can anyone believe him as a womanizer now. Let's be real here. If he was the lead in a romantic movie no would buy it for a minute.
Give me a current example of a gay guy playing a straight horny character on tv and making it work.

The actor who played Jack on Will and Grace is straight. Unless you knew of him off screen, you would never know he was straight by his obviously flaming gay mannerisms.

Neil Patrick Harris is an ACTOR! With an emphasis on the "act." Just because he came out doesn't mean that he can't make a convincing portrayal of a straight man, which he has been doing convincingly since his Doogie Howser days.
So what it comes down to is somewhat of a double standard: a straight man can "act" gay and a gay man can "act" gay but a gay man can't "act" straight.
I just hope and pray that they don't suddenly pull an Ellen and make Barney gay, just because Neil is.

T.R. Knight? (George O'Malley on Grey's Anatomy)
I agree with boeschner. N P Harris character on HIMYM was and still is the best thing about that show, and his coming out the closet won't make me accept him in that role any less. He's doing a great job as an actor. I mean, we accept James Gandolfini on the Sopranos as a member of a crime family, when we know that's not really the case...I think.

I like Neil Patrick Harris a lot, the whole thing I'm talking about is perception and I am sure that there are people involved with the show worried about the idea that the public is aware of the whole straight/gay matter in relation to the character.
And as far as perception goes, not everything works both ways.
Not saying it's right, but if you dont think the publicist for NPH and the producers of HIMYM were concerned, then you are dead wrong.
And Eric McCormack on W&G we knew from the get go was not gay.
And I don't think that Seth Hayes is straight. I don't know where you got that info from. I don't think he ever said it.
And for the record, I don't care what your sexual orientation is, I am talking about a tv show and the ramifications, so everyone just put it all into perspective, there's no soap box here.

Rock Hudson, Montgomery Clift, Tab Hunter, and Richard Chamberlain all seemed to have pretty good careers.
If you want a current example, Rupert Everett still gets cast in romantic comedies.

Those older actors weren't openly gay. I haven't seen Rupert Everett in a romantic lead lately, or one that was successful anyway.
I think that many gay actors don't come for fear that it will hurt their careers, in the sense that it will limit their roles. It may not be right, but it's true.

I can care less about his sexual orientation, just as along as he's a good actor, and he is. So, Great for Niel. I wish him the best... But So much for all my hope that little Doogie was still in love with Wanda all these years. Huh!

It's in Jersey.

Yeah. It smells more like hairspray and Juicy Fruit than any other state. Those two scents, when combined together, become a huge aphrodesiac.
