Family Affairs


This new sitcom is about an once-happily married Detriot couple: Rick and Barb Hayden (Gary Cole, Rita Wilson). Rick is a 45-year-old candidate running for Mayor of Detriot. Barb is a 44-year-old interior decorator. Rick and Barb have two children: 17-year-old Ashley (Brie Larsen) and 14-year-old Matt (Angus T. Jones). Ashley is a difficult and rebellious teenager who is quite popular with her male classmates. Matt is a typical young teenage boy who is adjusting the high school life. Ashley's a high school senior and Matt's a high school freshman. Things get messy in the family when Rick and Barb's marriage takes second to Rick's mayoral campaign. Out of spite, Barb finds herself in a secret affair with Rick's competitor/fellow mayoral candidate- Dave Winston (Scott Bakula). Also, Rick suddenly finds himself having secret feelings for his new intern for his mayoral campaign--Britney Halverson (Jennifer Elise Cox). Barb's best friend and boss, Julie Stevens (Laurie Metcalf) is the only other person (besides Barb and Dave) to know about Barb's on-going affair with Dave.

Episodes

Ep1: Pilot Episode:
Rick's mayoral campaign is dominating over everything in the lives of the Hayden family. Barb confides in Julie about her and Dave's on-going affair, and how Rick has been self-absorbed into his campaign lately. Meanwhile, Rick and Barb are called into the principal's office, because Ashley was caught making out in janitor's closet with a random boy during classtime.

Ep2: Out Past Curfew:
Barb is frustrated with keeping her affair secret, Rick's lack of time at home, and Ashley coming home way past her curfew on a school night. Also, Matt develops a crush on Ashley's best friend, Megan (Sara Paxton). Meanwhile, Rick is introduced to his campaign intern, Britney--the mutual attraction is established right away.

Ep3: The First Dinner:
The City of Detriot is sponsoring a banquet dinner for the upcoming mayoral election. Rick and Barb attend the dinner, as does Dave and his busybody wife, Janet (Julia Duffy). During the dinner, Barb compensates having too many drinks for Rick neglecting her. A drunken Barb and Dave secretly and separately meet and have a small, secretive chat (and end up doing a little something more). Meanwhile, Ashley and her friends decide to go to a house party (which is later busted by the cops).

Ep4: Flirting With Disaster:
During one night of working until late, Rick enlists Britney to stay and "help him out with a few things" (which leads to a very passionate love-making in his office). Afterwards, Rick feels guilty for cheating on Barb, but that soon disappears after he bumps into Britney again the next morning. Meanwhile, Matt enters himself into a skateboarding contest (without parental consent).

Ep5: The First Debate:
It is the first Hayden-Winston mayoral debate. Barb fears her and Dave's affair will be public sooner or later--but can't help but have feelings for Dave though. Ashley and Megan (Sara Paxton) come across a love note from Matt to Megan. Ashley brutally makes fun of her little brother, as where Megan decides to seek revenge on Ashley (who flirted with "her man" recently). When Ashley is not around, Megan persuades Matt into a makeout session (which is overseen by a royally pissed Ashley).

Ep6: Accidental Driving:
Still enraged by Megan for making out with her little brother, Ashley claims to "accidently" hit Megan with her car--leaving Megan hospitalized. Rick and Barb are furious with Ashley and take away her driving privileges. Det. Chris Jenkins (Dylan McDermott) investigates the Ashley-Megan-car incident, leaving Ashley to fear the worst. Meanwhile, Dave's uptight, busybody of a wife, Janet is diagnosed with breast cancer. Dave is perplexed, and cancels a secret date with Barb (for once) to be with Janet in her time of need (causing Barb to fear its over between them).

Ep7: Flaunting Hayden Women:
The press gets a hold of some adult photos of Barb during her college-days and use them to add leverage in the election--which causes Rick to be irate and tries to find some dirt on his opponent. Meanwhile, Ashley attempts to flirt her way out of the investigation done by Det. Jenkins (who at first, ignores her come-ons, but eventually gives in and commits a felony: sex with a minor).
