Lauren Stevens looked over the ad she had written for the local news paper. “Wanted: Two roommates to share three bedroom two bath house. Low rent, shared utilities and cable. Call 555-3648.” It sounded ok to her, about as good as it was going to get anyway. She called the paper and read the ad over the phone. The man who answered assured her that the ad would be in tomorrow’s paper. As she hung up the phone she was thankful that the ad would make it into the paper so soon. If she was going to keep this great house she needed roommates and fast. She looked down at her watch, “Seven thirty, time to start writing if I’m ever going to make that deadline.” She thought.

Lauren had graduated from the University of Kentucky with a degree in journalism just 4 years earlier. Her dream was to write a novel, but she had settled for writing a magazine column at the moment. She had recently saved enough money to buy her dream house on the beach in California, but her money hadn’t stretched as far as she had hoped and she was in desperate need of roommates to help out with the finances.

She typed furiously on her laptop as the hours ticked by. Before she knew it, it was 2 o’clock in the morning. “I’m going to bed!” She muttered sleepily. She closed her laptop and headed up the stairs to bed.

A few weeks later, Jake Reynolds flipped through the morning paper as he drank his coffee. He skimmed through the sports section then glanced at the classifieds. One of the ads caught his eye. “Wanted: Two roommates to share three bedroom two bath house. Low rent, shared utilities and cable. Call 555-3648.” “Ha! This is just what I’m looking for!” He laughed out loud. He had recently lost his apartment in a fire and he had been crashing in a friend’s basement until he found a new place to live. He picked up a phone and dialed the number.

Lauren was getting worried about finding some roommates to share her house. So far she had interviewed an ex-con, a womanizing old man, a guy with multiple personalities and a woman with six kids. She was beginning to wonder if it was even worth all of the trouble she had gone through. Her phone started to ring. “Hello” “Hi, my name is Jake Reynolds. I was calling about your ad in the paper. Are you still looking for roommates?” “Yes, actually I am. My name is Lauren Stevens, by the way.” “Well Miss Stevens, could I come over and look at the house?” “Sure. The address is 124 Lakeshore Drive.” “Great, is 6 o’clock tonight ok for you?” “Yes, that will be fine.” “Ok, I’ll see you then. Bye!” “Bye!”

As Lauren hung up the phone, she tried to analyze what Jake was like. “He sounds cute and he has an accent, I think it’s a Jersey accent…” She thought to herself.
