View Full Version : TV characters we never got to meet?
OK fellow sitcomers, here's a fun little topic to lighten the mood a bit.
Who's your favorite tv show character(s) that we (the viewer) never actually got to meet?
Here's my top 3
Marris - Niles' wife in Frasier
Mrs Columbo
Vera - Norm's wife in Cheers.
Sure I'll think of more, what about you?

 The funny thing is those 3 are at the top of my list as well. I'm not even a big Frasier fan either. Off the top of my head, I'll go with Shawn Hunter's sister mentioned in a first season Boy Meets World episode who is then never seen or mentioned again. There was just this one episode where Shawn was on the phone with her. I love that one Thanksgiving episode too on Cheers where Vera shows up, but a pie hits her face just before she walks on camera. They even got George's Wendt's real life wife to play her too

That's right! I forgot about that  , I didn't know it was his real life wife though.
Now that I think of it, I seem to remember Marris making a brief appearance, or at least her silhouette, in a funny bedroom scene.

The Mary Tyler Moore one? Oh yeah, I think that's Richard Diamond which David Janssen did a few years before The Fugitive.

I didn't know either, until I read it in TV Guide. I think it was one of those greatest episodes or greatest TV moments issues they do sometimes.

Didn't Kate Mulgrew play Mrs. Columbo? Or Am I thinking of something else?

Yeah she did a show called Mrs. Columbo. I think the name was later changed though to Kate Columbo and then they changed her last name to something else and called the show Kate Loves A Mystery. Richard Levinson and William Link, the Columbo creators, weren't involved with the show at all so it's not really part of the continuity of the original show at all.
Come to think of it, that reminds me of a great Columbo episode in the later revived series on ABC called Rest In Peace, Mrs. Columbo, where the wife of a guy that Columbo caught in the past, was convicted and later died in prison tried to kill Mrs. Columbo and then Columbo himself as revenge. The funny thing was they didn't even show her in that episode. They did kind of tease it though when they show a picture of a woman in the living room, but then it's later revealed when the killer is arrested (she didn't end up killing Columbo or the Mrs. but did kill a co-worker) that it's actually a picture of his wife's sister or something and that they weren't even in Lt. Columbo's real house.

JThat was also George Wednts real wife who did Veras voice on the CHEERS episode where she became the coat-checker at Melvilles. Not sure if it was her legs though in the scene where she was sitting on the steps of Cheers. It was also her voice in that episode where Sam locked his keys in the bar, and he's going around looking for a place to spend the night.

I do not ever recall seeing the Dittmeyers, who lived next door to the Bradys on The Brady Bunch.
Of course, we never got to see Walter Meany, the Army medic Shirley married during the last season of Laverne and Shirley beyond his bandages (I guess ABC was too cheap to find a guest star! ).

Stan, Karen's husband on Will & Grace.
I always wondered if we ever saw him! I didn't think so.
I'd also like to add Lars, Phyllis' husband on Mary Tyler Moore. Oh, and Dorothy's brother, Phil, on The Golden Girls. There was a running joke about him being a cross-dresser, lol!

True. I think they did finally show the actor's face after the series finale was shown during the curtain call. Earl Hindman had a paper picket fence in front of his face and then he pulled it away to finally reveal his full face, which I thought was pretty good.

Col. Potters wife Mildred on MASH. The picture of her on his desk was a picture of Spring Byington, who starred in the series DECEMBER BRIDE where he costared in the 50s.

Now that I've seen most of the episodes in reruns on My Network TV, I don't think they ever showed Judy and Linda's dad on Still Standing. Maybe he passed away :(
Swoosie Kurtz is great as the mom though (Mrs. Michaels) in the episodes I've seen her in. :)
Speaking of reruns I've been watching lately, I just thought of another one. They never showed Margaret's husband Louis on Becker, not even in the episode where Margaret and Louis visited Becker's apartment when Chris was having Thanksgiving dinner there. In the episode, he was watching TV in John's bedroom and Margaret mentions Louis in one scene when he spills beer on his pants and for some reason, he and John don't get along. They did show Margaret on the phone with Louis sometimes, when they were having problems. Come to think of it, they never showed Linda's boyfriend Gil either, even though he was the most long term relationship she had in the series.
