Just out of curiosity, has anyone here ever been put to sleep for any reason? Surgery, tests, etc? That is weighing on my mind for some reason...

Yep. To get a baby tooth removed. Not PULLED, surgically removed. They had to cut it out and tie a wire to the permanent tooth so that it would move... because the way it was positioned it never would've came out by itself. So, yeah... that was in July, 2000. It wasn't that much fun. I mean, I don't remember being asleep, but when I got home and was still tired I slept for a long time and it totally screwed up my system and half my mouth was numb so I ended up bleeding all over my pillow. It was really gross.

I've been put to sleep when I had my
tonsils out, when I had a cyst on each
of my ovaries(now that was painful) and
when I had my wisdom teeth pulled out.

I've had 5 surgeries. I was put to sleep for 4 of them. My last one I was awake the entire time.

Ouch, Ags! Why on earth did they leave you awake during a surgery?!

Thanks for all the responses, guys. I MAY have to have surgery, so I was just wondering what it was like to be put out...

Why do you need surgery?

Don't worry about it. You won't even notice you ever fell asleep! Or so I've heard.

I hurt myself playing ball.
It'll be my first time in a hospital and all, so I'm on the nervous side...

I was put to sleep once cos I had to go into hospital to have a cyst removed from the side of my face (it was right next to my ear).
When they put you to sleep it's actually ok. I got a needle shoved into my hand which was pretty sore and then the doctor tells you to count to 5. I think I got as far as 3 before I fell asleep. It's really odd and it happens real quick. Your vision starts rolling (like when the vertical hold goes wrong on your TV and the picture starts rolling up and down) and then that's all you remember.
Waking up from the drugs is even weirder though. I was lying in the recovery room and I could hear EVERYTHING that was going on around me but I couldn't open my eyes. It was like my body was asleep but my brain wasn't! That sounds scary but it was actually pretty cool.
The worst thing was the bruise I had on my hand from where they shoved the needle in. My hand was all black and blue for about a month afterwards and it was really painfull!

This song shows an important message

*Look at me, You may think you see who I really am, but you'll never know me. Every day it's as if I play a part. Now I see if I wear a mask, I can fool the world, but I cannot fool my heart. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? When will my reflection show who I am inside? I am now in a world where I have to hide my heart, and what I believe in. But somehow, I will show the world what's inside my heart, and be loved for who I am. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? Why is my reflection someone I don't know? Must I pretend that I'm someone else, for all time? When will my reflection show who I am inside? There's a heart that must be free to fly. That burns with a need to know the reason why. Why must we all conceal,
what we think, how we feel? Must there be a secret me, I'm forced to hide? I won't pretend that I'm someone else, for all time. When will my reflection show who I am inside, when will my reflection show who I am inside?*

It was a simple surgery. I had carpol tunnel syndrom in my left wrist (aka tendonitus). All they did was put up a sheet so I couldn't see. Then they put a really big cuff on my arm to stop the blood flow down there. It just felt like when your arm falls asleep. Then I just talked with the anestisiologist (sp?) the entire time.

I was offered on a couple of my other surgeries to be awake, but those surgeries were going to take a long time, and I figured I would have been bored, so I declined on those.

The other surgeries I had, after I was out to sleep, it just felt like seconds before I woke up again. I felt a bit groggy and all, but I never had any major complications after surgery.

What type of surgery might you be having?

Yeah, I've had tubes put in my ears 9 times, and my adnoids out 3 times. But that's all I've been put to sleep for.

The only surgeries I've ever had are 2 minor oral surgeries. I was awake for one, but they put me out when I had my wisdom teeth out, since all 4 of them were impacted...

I had all 4 wisdom teeth out and they put me to sleep for that. That was done in the office. I hate the laughing gas. It made me nauseous (is that how you spell that?). I woke up and my face was swollen and so was my hand. The IV fell out and my hand filled up with fluid. I couldn't eat anything that night because I felt sick from the anesthesia.

I had jaw surgery like 14 years ago and I was out for that too.
I was out for like 8 hours for that and in the hospital for 5 days.

omg..I had to read the question twice because the first time I thought you meant "put to sleep" like what they do to sick pets........oy, must be a bad day..

Anyways, yeah. I had those ear tube things when I was really little, and my one stupid baby tooth wouldnt go away so they took it out. (I am awful w/ dentistry, if they want to even THINK about doing anything I have to be asleep!!!)

I've had leg surgery. They just numbed my leg and that was it. My mom has had surgery where she had to be put to sleep. So has my dad.
