View Full Version : If N@N knows that Only Family Comedies do well in ratings, why do they add shows like

A Different World, Perfect Strangers, Designing Women, and Murphy Brown? The Family Shows are the ones that seem to do well like the Cosby Show, Roseanne, and Fresh Prince so why not continue to add those type of shows to the lineup? Shows like Family Matters, Different Strokes, Gimmie a Break, Blosson, 227, and Hangin with Mr. Cooper? You would think the higher ups at the N@N Network would be smart enough to stay away from shows like
Living Single
News Radio
Wings
A Different World
Designing Women
I expect Designing to be moved to 5am SOON-lol

Yes, very strange. Just a little fact though, Perfect Strangers did very well for them in late night. It was part of a library deal so they could never expand it. Charles in Charge also did very well for them in late night.
They had Diff'rent Strokes already. It did very well for them, too, but at the end I think it didn't do well. Living Single is coming to TV One, not Nick@Nite. Mr. Cooper is also coming to TV One soon. 227 is on TV Land and TV One. Family Matters is coming to Nick@Nite in 2008, though.

Family Matters and Home Improvement will be great pick-ups for them. Both are family shows and both have done well in syndication. Other family shows you mentioned like Blossom, Gimme a Break! have not historically done well in syndication. They are better suited in the morning/daytime, like Hogan Family is on ABC Family.
Upcoming on Nick@Nite:
Home Improvement 2007
Scrubs 2007
Family Matters 2008
The Nanny 2009
Friends 2011
They are going with hits in syndication, well Scrubs isn't, but that is going to be borrowed from Comedy Central, their sister station.

I didn't know Family Matters was definately coming in 2008. I can't wait. I predict it will be a REALLY BIG HIT, when it comes. I think it'll get Roseanne/Fresh Prince ratings eventually. They can throw all kinds of urkel marathons and stuff. (Urkel's inventions/ Halloween episodes, Christmas eps, etc).

with the exception of Friends (which i can't get enough of) i agree with you, these shows are overplayed... i love the nanny, but Lifetime has overplayed it... but i guess i can say at least it's not The Golden Girls, which is even more overplayed.

Viacom owns a lot of channels. How do you think TV Land is airing movies on Fridays? They are borrowing them from Spike, Comedy Central, VH1, etc.
When The Nanny comes to N@N, it'll be off Lifetime. Friends and Home Improvement will continue on TBS I believe when they come to Nick@Nite. Not sure if Family Matters will continue on ABC Family or not.
Gimme a Break was last seen nationally like in 1998 on USA Network. It is on a few local channels right now.

I don't have a problem with "Srcubs" coming to N@N down the line. But 2007 is ridiculous! The show may still be on next year, then N@N would have a current show on their network. "Family Matters" is a good pick up though. And I believe that "Home Improvement" will do very well and end up getting overplayed just like Fresh Prince and Roseanne. I'm not too sure about "The Nanny." Instincts tell me it will suck in the ratings from the start, but I wouldn't be surprised if it does well. "Friends" will obviously do well, because it always does.
With the exception of Scrubs and The Nanny, N@N looks to be improving their shows. I just wish they would treat them better and not make us all sick of their overairing each episode of each show. But they can't hear me and with those great ratings pouring in, they wouldn't even care if they could hear me.

I'm surprised Who's The Boss? didn't do all that well for them (or so it appeared). I love Murphy Brown, Wings, etc. but when they announced those, I knew they'd bomb. Mad About You I don't think has done very well in syndication, which is a little surprising.
I'm annoyed at the Scrubs pick-up. Way too early for that, even if Comedy Central is airing it. I'm actually watching it though for the first time on Comedy Central (when I can) and it's a really good show, IMO, but it doesn't belong on N@N.
Family Matters and Home Improvement will do great I think. N@N will totally do loads of marathons for FM.
I don't see The Nanny doing all that well, but you never know ... Friends will do well because it has always done well. I enjoy the show, but it frustrates me when there are so many shows that deserve airtime and certain shows are on every local and already on cable.

All the shows they've acquired have been played to death by every other network. I think they should get the rights to Blossom and hope that maybe nostalgia will translate into adequate numbers because it hasn't been on tv in years. My mom and I were sitting around the other day and I just started singing the theme song and it got stuck in her head for the whole day and then we started reminiscing how we would watch it every night on The WB together. Come on N@N, my mom is a 37 year old woman who is nostalgic for Blossom! I think the show appeals to all ages because it wasn't as cookie cutter and saccharine as the family comedies that preceded it (though, I admit, that last season got a little too issue-friendly). Come on, pavandabal, it looks like you have an in -- can't you at least lie and tell them its the most demanded show on this site?

I bet you that Nick at Nite will probably just add Scrubs to their latenight schedule, like they did with NewsRadio, because it just seems like a show that would be placed in latenight. I mean, why would they want to replace an airing of Roseanne for Scrubs, when Roseanne does much better.

YES! YES! YES! This would be AWESOME! on N@N. I would have thought they would do a TGIF lineup, with Full House, Family Matters and Step By Step,- like N@N used to do with the classic "Must See TV" lineup a few years ago. (Cheers, Family Ties, and Cosby Show). The TGIF stuff would have been a perfect match for the N@N viewers. And Step By Ste is not at all played out like any of the "New" shows they're gonna get.
And if they insist on getting the rights to sows that have been played out, the least they could have done is get "Boy Meets World." I might be sick of it alot of the time these last few years, but it'd be perfect on N@N. Drop Scrubs and get Boy Meets World!!!...And to go even further, if the MUST get a show still on the air, Reba would be a ncie fit, and 8 Simple Rules airing at 9pm mwould be terrific!

I love The Nanny. IMO, it's as close as you're going to come to a modern-day I Love Lucy. I have the first two seasons on dvd and I am hoping for the third season soon. I never watched Home Improvement during it's first run, but I started watching it on TBS earlier this year and I really like it (except Tim can be ridiculously asinine at times). When are the contracts for Roseanne and Fresh Prince of Bel-Air up? I can't wait to be rid of those shows!
By the way, this is a very good thread topic!

I think Blossom would do poorly in syndication....
There have been shows that I thought did well in syndication on N@N but were then said to not have (Facts of Life - 2 marathons second one was by request I thought).
I hoped Family Ties would have done well on one of the channels but N@N, TVLand, and Hallmark have all removed it from their line up.
I would like to see some of the family shows or good comedies replace ones like Fresh Prince, Roseanne, and Cosby.
I understand they are trying to be modern but cant they try to be modern without jumping on the rating wagon off all the other channels?
I think some other shows like:
One Day at a Time, Alice, Mr. Belvedere, Kate and Allie, Double Trouble (I think thats the name) could potentially do well. Maybe if N@N didnt keep the same show on for years and years they could show they ones not played that often and rotate better and still keep up good ratings.
I am just about sick of these weekend marathons with Fresh Prince and Roseanne. How many times can you watch Will make fun of Carlton or Roseanne boss someone around before you lose ratings?
I would hate to see Family Matters added - I know I am in the minority - I just feel that if they added something I have not been able to watch on another channel that I could enjoy watching the channel a lot more.
By the way what happened to the big deal with N@N adding A Different World and News Radio? I barely see either show on and when I do its only once in a while and usually very late. Not that I care about either show but curious.

It's no secret that I dislike Family Matters, so yes, I agree with you on not adding Family Matters to the lineup. They would play that damn show to death.
I am sick to death of Fresh Prince and Roseanne marathons every freakin' day. Whatever happen to rotating shows? Why not make room for other shows to get back their old fanfare like Newsradio, A Different World, Designing Women, and Mad About You? They need to bring back Facts of Life because FOL is doing excellent in their DVD sales, I would like to see that along with Punky Brewster, Blossom, and The Hogan Family. Roseanne is getting on my last nerves.
