View Full Version : Trends, fads, and the fall from grace

I got this idea from seeing Vanilla Ice on MTV. Let's talk about stuff that was popular for awhile, but then it was just another fad. Let me see some fads that I can think of that involves music.
Ricky Martin- He had one good song that made him well know. "Livin' La Vida Loca" brought him fame, but in a way I know he won't be able to top Livin La Vida Loca.
MC Hammer- I was in about 1st grade when his song "U Can't Touch This" topped the charts. I don't remember if he had another hit after that. I know he is a preacher now.
Vanilla Ice- Ice Ice Baby is another song that was going on during the early 90's. I think his career dropped soon after.
The Spice Girls- I think what made them become another fad was because they were on everything. When you see them on a bag of chips, then you know they are everywhere...
New Kids on the Block- This one is bringing back memories for me. I remember school picture day in 1st grade I wore a NKOTB shirt. I think what made them become a fad was the shortening of the name. They were know longer New Kids on the Block, but NKOTB. I heard they were doing a reunion concert, so maybe they will have another cd out soon.
In this post you can talk about anything- music, movies, toys, or whatever. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

Lumpy: Did you go out for anything, Dud?
Dudley: Well, I went out for football, but I got my finger stepped on, so my mother made me quit.
Eddie: Well listen-- I went out for basketball and I got my hair pulled, and my mother made ME quit.
Dudley: It's not that I was afraid of getting hurt or anything; it's just that-- well, it's kind o' hard to play the flute with a busted finger.

If I recall, the New Kids' career was longer than any of the other musicians you mentioned, so I am not sure if they would fall under the "fad" category. The shortening of the name to NKOTB didn't occur until they tried to make a comback sometime in the '90s. That stage was certainly a fad, I'd say, but I don't know if you could say the first part of their career was a fad.
But then I suppose it depends on one's definition of a fad. I think other factors besides longevity are involved, especially when we talk about the music business, because if a relatively short career were the only criteria, then like 80% of music is a fad.
Anyhoo, a few I can think of are Tickle Me Elmo and all his Tickle Me friends (Cookie Monster, I think there was an Ernie and maybe Big Bird) and Beanie Babies.
Hmmm....and how about fashion? Anybody remember "tight-rolling" your jeans?
I'm sure I'll think of more later. (BTW, this is a good topic! Should be lots of fun!)

Actually it's an icon meant to be used with AOL instant messenger. I got it at www.badassbuddy.com (http://www.badassbuddy.com) They have lots of really great ones there, but I'm warning you now, some of them are vulgar and may be offensive to some people, so don't say I didn't warn you! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/wink.gif

Ooh! Ooh! Virtual pets! Like, Tamagachis and Giga Pets. Those were HUGE at my school. But they faded out. Same with Yo-Yos. Both were about 4 or 5 years ago. And, like Bootsy mentioned, Beanie Babies.
As for music, LFO comes to mind. "Summer Girls" was pretty big, but after that they just faded out. They have a new album out, which I haven't heard and don't care to, but I haven't heard anyone talking about it.
Fashion-wise.. Well, I'm not sure if this really qualifies, but when I was little my sister and all her friends wore two pairs of socks. Like, on the left foot there would be a blue sock then a green sock, and on the right foot there would be a green sock then a blue sock.
And I'm probably going no where with this, but when I was in the sixth grade, EVERYBODY had those DocuMent Folders or whatever that are plastic and have about 10 pockets in them and you use elastic bands to keep them closed..
Maybe these were all just at my school, but they could've been other places as well.

FURBY. They were so big, and now they are not lol. I got so pissed at mine I chucked it out the window. My friend has 22. Just Imagine.

**In the year 2005, Lauren and I are driving to California to beg and pleed Lisa Whelchel and Nancy McKeon to become our mothers. She will become "Lauren McKeon" and I will become "Karli-wait a minute. I can't become 'Karli Cauble' AGAIN, can I???" Oh well, Just remember us as the "Cauble/McKeon kids!!"**
This song shows an important message
*Look at me, You may think you see who I really am, but you'll never know me. Every day it's as if I play a part. Now I see if I wear a mask, I can fool the world, but I cannot fool my heart. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? When will my reflection show who I am inside? I am now in a world where I have to hide my heart, and what I believe in. But somehow, I will show the world what's inside my heart, and be loved for who I am. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? Why is my reflection someone I don't know? Must I pretend that I'm someone else, for all time? When will my reflection show who I am inside? There's a heart that must be free to fly. That burns with a need to know the reason why. Why must we all conceal,
what we think, how we feel? Must there be a secret me, I'm forced to hide? I won't pretend that I'm someone else, for all time. When will my reflection show who I am inside, when will my reflection show who I am inside?*

You chucked it out the window?! lol, poooor Furby....
I don't think this really qualifies as a fad or not..but has anyone seen the new Popples? Remember the Popples? They're these creatures that can turn into balls and there was a cartoon about them? And they had stuffed animals, but back in the day they were all monochromatic, even if they were hot pink. But the new Popples....oooh the new Popples are scary tripped out psychedelic colors.
Anyway, that doesn't has much to do with anything necessarily, but talking about toys made me think of it.
[This message has been edited by Bootsy Whoosh (edited 10-22-2001).]
One of the oddest clothing fads was guy's sportscoats with the arms shoved up to the elbow. You can still see that in the old sitcoms. Sam had one on the other night on Cheers.
One trend I'd like to see go is the backward baseball cap. I didn't expect it to hold on so long. I remember doing that only to accentuate the point if I wanted to look goofy. It's kind of a Goober thing.
Jimmy Swagart fell from grace about as comically as any script writer could have possibly come up with.
Michael Jackson might be back, but from the height he was once elevated to he has fallen from that grace for certain.
I was watching MTV the other day. A young woman was making an imitation Madona video. She did a good job. But She said, "That's so cool," a lot, a lot, a lot. At first it was just the word "cool" that made a come back. Only it was pronounced more like, "Kul". Then the variations and moderations and now, well, It's trendy... Cool!

I still have my Popples. I have a small one that is a lime green, and a larger one that is a light purple.
I didn't know they had come out with them again. Hmmm...I'd like to see what they look like nowadays.

I just caught a TV commercial for them the other day. Watch like FOX or Cartoon Network in the after-school hours and I'm sure you'll catch them.
I just don't get why they are making a comeback. They aren't making a new cartoon as far as I know of, so little kids nowadays aren't even gonna know what Popples are.
My theory as to why they are scary tripped out psychedlic colors now is that they know that the only people who will know what Popples are are like college aged, and have quite possibly experimented with drugs, lol. Plus, ya know, retro stuff is sort of in with the college crowd, and I just know there are some stoners in the dorms watching Cartoon Network thinking that they have to go buy a Popple, lol!

I just now caught the commercial. They really are psychedlic colors. They look like somebody was tripping when they designed 'em. lol. I totally agree with you that the kids aren't really going to have a good understanding of what they are.
If you have no idea what we are talking about, then go to this website. It is pretty cool. Somebody who grew up with them, like me, made this site so it is pretty accurate.

Anyone remember back in the 80's when girls crimped their hair? I used to want a crimper SOOO bad but my mom never bought me one. Now I'm glad she didn't.

Ok all this Popples talk has me reminiscing about the cartoons I used to watch as a kid. Remember the Wuzzles? Or how about the Shirt Tales? And what were those things called that were like tiny monkeys? Anyone know what I'm talking about?
Anyhoo, sorry, I don't want this thread to go careening off track here....so....
I agree that Cabbage Patch Kids were a pretty big fad. And how about slap bracelets? Actually those made a semi-comeback about 2 years ago. How about Pound Puppies or My Little Pony. Both made feeble attempts at comebacks int he 90s.
And when we are talking about trends, fads, and falls from grace, how can we not mention Milli Vanilli?

I remember them! Oh, boy, do I remember the news reports of parents physically fighting over them at the malls and toy stores. I remember just having to have one, and I got one for Christmas. Of course I grew out of that. It's stored away now in a dusty box in a closet in my bedroom at my parent's house

Oh, how aabout those miniature skateboard things? I could go ANYWHERE without seeing some guy playing with one. I forget what they're called, but they're like little tiny skateboards that you move and flip with your fingers... maybe they're called fingerboards.

Slap bracelets!! I had tons of those things. I won lots of them playing skee-ball at Chuck E. Cheese.
My 13 year-old cousin had one at her birthday party a couple weeks ago and I remember thinking "Why does she have one of those? That was so early 90's." But I guess if they made a comeback...

About MC Hammer and Vanilla Ice, MC Hammer has actually released five albums but he is best known for the song "U Can't Touch This." He plans on releasing a new gospel album soon. Vanilla Ice has released three albums. He has another one that he wants to release but he can't find a record deal.
Remember when Kris Kross came out? They started a trend by wearing their clothes backwards. I was around 14 or 15 back then and I do remember wearing my t-shirt and jeans backwards a couple of times.
Remember those Michael Jackson Beat It jackets with all the zippers on them? It seemed like every kid in America wanted one.
Remember when kids were rolling the bottom of their jeans up? I remember doing that and it was a pain.
Remember when bib overalls otherwise known as "bibs" were in? Everyone (myself included) would leave one strap down.

OMG I can't believe I didn't think of Kris Kross! Kris Kross are living embodiments of a fad.
As for rolling, are you talking about tight rolling? I mentioned that before but no one said anything so I figured no one had any idea what I was talking about. But you didn't just roll the jeans up, you like folded them over and then rolled them so they'd fit snug around your ankle. And yes, it was a major pain in the ass!
I really can't get over some 80s fashions now that I look back. Things are so much more casual these days.
One more fad: button fly jeans. And of course the accompanying T-shirts that said "Unbutton my Fly".
