List songs that you feel are the most beautiful and why:
LADY - Kenny Rogers
This song written by Lionel Richie, I feel is one of the most beautiful and romantic songs ever written for ladies. It says so much without any hidden meanings, it's all said in those lyrics. The song gives me feeling everytime I hear it. The words and music never get old or tired.
THREE TIMES A LADY - The Commodores
A song written by Lionel again, for his mother. It can be directed at any woman, a wife, a girlfriend, a mother, grandmother, it crosses all those barriers. It really evokes so much emotion through the lyrics. This song was a definite stretch for the Commodores, but it was the beginning of Lionel's beautiful ballads.
THE POWER OF LOVE - Celine Dion
A woman telling a man that she is HIS LADY and he is HER MAN.
Very simple yet powerful. Her singing on this song is certainly one of her best.
IMAGINE - John Lennon
A universal song that says so much. It gives me a chill everytime I hear it. It's more than an anthem for Peace.

There are so many beautiful songs out there....here are mine:
Mandy - Barry Manilow....that song tells it like it is, straight from the heart!
Today - Jefferson Airplane...Grace Slick knows how to play with the catchy arrangements and the lyrics are wonderful..unforgettable!
New Day Yesterday - Jethro Tull...the riff in that song KOs me all the time and it has yet to be equalled!
Summertime - as sung by Janis Joplin, perhaps the greatest woman singer of the psot war period....it touches my heart all the time becausde you can feel the emotion out of each lyric!
Jealous Guy - John Lennon....it's so subtle!
Good Morning Little Schoolgirl - covered by many artists, I prefer the Grateful Dead's version....it marked the history of the blues!

Great question Irene!:D
I would have to say for me some of the most beautiful songs are:
Something - The Beatles, just a really great song about a man's love of a woman. George did good on this one.
And I Love Her- Beatles nobody writes of the love of a woman like the Beatles did, this is my all time fav of theirs. This one was written when he was with Jane Asher.
Your Song - Elton John again a really great song if your in love with someone.
Just My Imagination - The Temptations
What A Difference A Day Makes - Dinah Washington
Michelle - The Beatles, wish my name was Michelle!
My Cherie Amour - Stevie Wonder
Sentimental Lady - Bob Welch
Time In A Bottle - Jim Croce, because there is never enough time to say everything you want to say, and if we could save time in a bottle for those moment that we need just one more chance to say something to someone who is no longer there.
Woman - John Lennon, when I first heard this song, I thought finally a guy who gets it and appreciates us, a song every man should listen to. Thanks John!
You Bring Me Joy - Anita Baker
My Love, Maybe I'm Amazed - Paul McCartney both these songs tell a story of how he loved Linda and how she was his soulmate.
Patiently- Journey- this song is great because it tells you to be patient and the things that you want to acheive will come to you.
Any Love - Luther Vandross this songs talks about the search for love and wondering if it is out there for you.
Hopeless - Dionne Faris- Song talks about moving on and getting it together after a breakup.
Why - Annie Lennox (this song makes me cry)
I Can't Make You Love Me - Bonnie Raitt
Please Don't Go Away - Boy's II Men
Heart Of Mine - Boz Scaggs
Happy Man - Chicago another song about the love of a woman.
No Tell Lover -Chicago

What a beautiful and emotional song he wrote abt asking God to let his mother dance with his father one more time. Very emotional and always makes me cry when I hear it.
Words - Bee Gees
Very heartfelt. Especially the last chorus with no music, just acapella.

Its rare, but Mike and the mechanics had a flip side song called
Par Avion-
It was used in a rare soundtrack and to this day one of my favorites.
More so the music than the words- because its rather short- but its really really pretty.
If I ever had a wedding, I would play it..
Mike And The Mechanics Par Avion lyrics
Another day has passed me by
And there's an island in the sun
To see me through
Another day in paradise
But there's no reason, there's no rhyme
Without you
Here comes the night (night)
Here comes the dreaming of you
Breathing your love in me
Here comes the night (night)
Here comes the feeling I've been
Waiting here for so long
I've been waiting here for so long
There's a time and there's a place
When we can share the silver night
Silent room
In my bed an empty space
Cos there's no other in my life
Only you
Here comes the night (night)
Here comes the dreaming of you
Breathing your love in me
Here comes the night (night)
Here comes the feeling I've been
Waiting here for so long
I've been waiting here for so long
Here comes the night
Here comes the dreaming of you
Breathing your love in me
Here comes the night (night)
Here comes the feeling I've been
Waiting here for so long
I've been waiting here for so long

thank you. That song is incredibly beautiful. It made me sad to hear it when it was first released. I recall watching the music video to this song before I heard it on the radio. And just like you, after my own father died, it too had an affect on me. I cry when I hear that. The words abt the guy having a son and seeing his father in his son, moves me. I want to cry now.

Sara - Bob Dylan
I laid on a dune I looked at the sky
When the children were babies and played on the beach
You came up behind me, I saw you go by
You were always so close and still within reach.
Sara, Sara
Whatever made you want to change your mind
Sara, Sara
So easy to look at, so hard to define.
I can still see them playing with their pails in the sand
They run to the water their buckets to fill
I can still see the shells falling out of their hands
As they follow each other back up the hill.
Sara, Sara
Sweet virgin angel, sweet love of my life
Sara, Sara
Radiant jewel, mystical wife.
Sleeping in the woods by a fire in the night
Drinking white rum in a Portugal bar
Them playing leapfrog and hearing about Snow White
You in the marketplace in Savanna-la-Mar.
Sara, Sara
It's all so clear, I could never forget
Sara, Sara
Loving you is the one thing I'll never regret.
I can still hear the sounds of those Methodist bells
I'd taken the cure and had just gotten through
Staying up for day in the Chelsea Hotel
Writing "Sad-Eyed Lady of the Lowlands" for you.
Sara, Sara
Wherever we travel we're never apart
Sara, Sara
Beautiful lady, so dear to my heart.
How did I meet you ? I don't know
A messenger sent me in a tropical storm
You were there in the winter, moonlight on the snow
And on Lily Pond Lane when the weather was warm.
Sara, Sara
Scorpio Sphinx in a calico dress
Sara, Sara
You must forgive me my unworthiness.
Now the beach is deserted except for some kelp
And a piece of an old ship that lies on the shore
You always responded when I needed your help
You gimme a map and a key to your door.
Sara, Sara
Glamorous nymph with an arrow and bow
Sara, Sara
Don't ever leave me, don't ever go.

I wonder what radio stations would play that song? It's considered a rock song right? I'm not sure if I've ever heard it. I've read the lyrics which are good. Which Beatle cd would it be on?
It would be considered soft rock or classic rock. "Imagine" gets played on classic rock stations, soft rock stations, adult contemporary stations...
"Imagine" is not a song by The Beatles. It is on the second solo album that John recorded after The Beatles broke up in 1970. It album is infact called Imagine and was released in 1971.

Not my exhaustive list, but some all-time beautiful songs for me are:
I Got You, Babe--Sonny and Cher
Unchained Melody--Righteous Brothers
My Cup Runneth Over--Ed Ames
Moon River--Andy Williams
One Summer Night--The Danleers
Everything that touches you--The Association
Duke of Earl--Gene Chandler
Image of a Girl--The Safaris
You, baby--The Turtles
Lola--The Kinks (Just kidding!--I do like the song, though, just think it's not in this category. Mallory Keaton's friend Nick on Family Ties thought it was a romantic song.)
(Dated, and maybe 'corny' by today's standards, but I like them. Plus, they're incredibly romantic songs, besides having a beautiful sound, in my opinion)

I think "Unchained Melody" by the Righteous Brothers is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I want it to be my wedding song, actually.
Other beautiful songs I can think of:
"Against All Odds"; Phil Collins
"Imagine"; John Lennon
"Layla"; Eric Clapton
"How Deep is Your Love?" ; The Bee Gees
"Stairway to Heaven"; Led Zeppelin (seems like an odd choice, I know, but I consider it to be so beautiful)
"Someone Saved My Life Tonight"; Elton John
"The Maker Makes"; Rufus Wainright (Every time I hear this song on the Brokeback Mountain soundtrack, I get shivers).
I'll think of more later :)

"Beautiful" by Meshell Ndegeocello - (the title speaks for its self. I just love how Meshell sings this song. It's low and very pure and calm).
"He Loves Me" by Jill Scott- (it's beautiful because she talks about the different ways her man loves her).
You love me especially different every time
You keep me on my feet happily excited
By your cologne, your hands, your smile, your intelligence
You woo me, you court me, you tease me, you please me
You school me, give me some things to think about
Ignite me, you invite me, you co-write me, you love me, you like me
You incite me

You're absolutely right about the New Cristy Minstrels song. It was very melodious, if that's the correct word.
I looked up the Roger Whittaker song; the title's slightly different. It's called "The Last Farewell" instead of just "Last Farewell". It's another beautiful song, in its own right. There's a website for Roger Whittaker--

Not my exhaustive list, but some all-time beautiful songs for me are:
One Summer Night--The Danleers
A big Doo-Wop hit from 1958.
Duke of Earl--Gene Chandler
That's usually considered to be a novelty song; I've never thought of it as "beautiful." And Gene's voice certainly is not on the same level as Nat King Cole or Bing Crosby! ;)
Image of a Girl--The Safaris
From 1960. A very good lead vocalist.

Unchained Melody--Righteous Brothers
My Cup Runneth Over--Ed Ames
Moon River--Andy Williams
One Summer Night--The Danleers
Everything that touches you--The Association
Duke of Earl--Gene Chandler
Image of a Girl--The Safaris
You, baby--The Turtles
Lola--The Kinks (Just kidding!--I do like the song, though, just think it's not in this category. Mallory Keaton's friend Nick on Family Ties thought it was a romantic song.)
(Dated, and maybe 'corny' by today's standards, but I like them. Plus, they're incredibly romantic songs, besides having a beautiful sound, in my opinion)
I gave my most beautiful songs, but never really said why: What they all have in common for me is that, everytime I hear them, they never sound 'old' or 'overplayed'. It's almost like I'm hearing them for the first time. They affect me deeply. It could be a memory I have when I hear them, or some image that comes to mind, or I think of some person I knew or some event or situation associated with each song.
I'd also like to add:
You Know What I Mean--The Turtles
Never Ending Story--Limahl

Somebody Loves Your Baby - Patti Labelle
No One in the World - Anita Baker
Don't Cry for Me Argentina - Patti Lupone

Same here. I love oldies because of the memories they bring me. I was a child, but it brings back wonderful memories. I had an older sister and brother who would always play oldies and so I got hooked on them. Now my own children enjoy them.

I've noticed that too, Irene; there doesn't seem to be as much of a generational 'divide' as there was let's say, between my parents' music, and the music I grew up on in the late 50's and in the 60's.

True. I think in my family, the music is the one thing where there is no gap whatsoever. We all love the oldies. Nothing like oldies playing while barbecuing.

I agree, "Imagine" is a beautiful song. It's just so perfect in every way. I also get chills when I hear it. Our Lady Peace did a good cover of it. Nothing could ever replace the original Lennon version though. :)

Nothing to be embarassed about, I am a straight male with a lovely girlfriend and look at the list I submitted it includes Kenny G.
Christopher Cross rules, I cannot get enough of both Arthurs Theme and Sailing. Unfortunately, he is the epitome of the song "video killed the radio star."
