*Look at me, You may think you see who I really am, but you'll never know me. Every day it's as if I play a part. Now I see if I wear a mask, I can fool the world, but I cannot fool my heart. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? When will my reflection show who I am inside? I am now in a world where I have to hide my heart, and what I believe in. But somehow, I will show the world what's inside my heart, and be loved for who I am. Who is that girl I see, staring straight back at me? Why is my reflection someone I don't know? Must I pretend that I'm someone else, for all time? When will my reflection show who I am inside? There's a heart that must be free to fly. That burns with a need to know the reason why. Why must we all conceal,
what we think, how we feel? Must there be a secret me, I'm forced to hide? I won't pretend that I'm someone else, for all time. When will my reflection show who I am inside, when will my reflection show who I am inside?*

That I graduated High School! I almost
didn't graduate, we had to take the
9th Grade Proficiency Test. We had to
pass all four tests to graduate. If you
don't pass all four, you don't graduate!
You have 8 chances to pass all four, it
took me 7 tries to pass the Mathematics
part. So, I'm proud I graduated.

*shudders* Ick, we're taking those this week. Only we have 5 tests, writing, reading, math, citizenship, and science. Normally Ohio students take the 9th grade test in 8th grade, but they thought my class (2005) would be the first class to take some high school evaluation exam or something instead during our sohpmore year. Only they found out it won't be ready next year so the class of 2007 will be the first class to take it.

Anyway, I'm proud of my grades.

I lived in Ohio while taking those tests.
After I graduated in 1996, maybe 1 or 2
years later, they added Science to those
tests. Whenever you take the tests, goodluck! I hope you do well! I hope you
are good in Math.

I took Ohio proficiency tests, and I had to take them in 9th and 12th grade. I've never heard of anyone taking them in 8th grade, that must be a new policy since I graduated or something. When I took them, you only had to pass the 9th grade ones to graduate, but I heard they were soon going to say that you had to pass the 12th to graduate as well, because I remember everyone getting their panties all in a twist about that, because you would only have 2 chances to pass those.

I live in Georgia and my Junior year in highschool I had to take the High School Graduation Tests. It consisted of Writing, Literature, Math, Science, and Social Studies. You have to pass the tests with a score of 500. I made a 500 + on every part but the Science. I made exactly 500 on that Science part, I'm pretty happy I passed all those tests... http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif

500? Are you serious? Those must be some
pretty long tests! I'm not sure if it's
the same still, but in Ohio, you have
to have a 200 to pass. I'm glad I don't
live in Georgia, no offense!

I don't think we need to pass the 12th to graduate, because I remember my sister saying something about how last year when she took them they promised the seniors something if everyone passed, that way people would actually attempt to pass them.

And Angel, we're taking the tests this week. Monday was writing, today was reading, tomorrow's math, Thursday is citizenship, and next Monday is science because we don't have school Friday. And, thankfully, I am good at math. I know a lot of people who are stressing out about tomorrow because they don't do well in math, but the one I'm worried about is science. My Biology teacher hasn't reviewed ANYTHING that might be on the proficiencies with us, so I'm completely unprepared.

Since it's been a while ever since I've
been in school and I'm not sure if things
have changed, but the teacher/teachers
"sometimes" won't review anything. These
tests are based on the knowledge from
what you have learned in each class. The
teacher/teachers don't know what's going
to be on the test, so how can they review
all these things that you have learned
over the year. You are expected to know
these things. What have you learned over
the year in Science, Mathematics and etc?
It all boils down to the basics. Well, I
hope everyone does well on their tests.
Good luck!
P.S. A word of advice, skim through the
things that you have learned and during
the test, keep telling yourself " I know
this" or "I know these things" and the
answers should come to you.

Well, I'm News Editor. I lay-out the front page along with Page 2 and 3 of that same section. It's tedious, trying to fit all the ads and articles within four columns. But it's fun, nonetheless. Especially since The Paw's(that's what our school paper is called) staff gets free food from advertisers.

Actually, this year at least, the teachers get these things called "Buckle Down On Ohio..." Reading, Writing, Citizenship, Math, Science. I got one in Hisotry, and since I'm in honors English and honors Geometry I didn't get a reading, writing, or math one. My biology teacher chose not to give us our own book, but most of the teachers had a class set where they could at least review with their students. My teacher didn't bother to even look at the Buckle Down. I tried looking for science notes I've taken over the years, but some of the stuff that's supposed to be on the test was from, like 6th grade and I don't remember any of it. (I know what this stuff is 'cause they gave us a packet saying what we should know (ie. We should know the "nitrogen cycle" and "the difference between" this and that, but they don't actually tell us what the nitrogen cycle is or what the differences are so I am SO going to fail this, which would be horrible 'cause I've never failed anything before and I really don't think a proficiency test is where I want to start). ANYWAY, point is, he could have at least asked us if we had any questions, but no.

Don't stress, you won't fail. Like angel said, these test ask for the basics. You are not going to need to know intimate details about the nitrogen cycle, just the basics. (Well, I can't know for sure what you will need to and not, because it's been awhile since I took these tests, and I don't even think I had to take the science one).

But anyway, all the nitrogen cycle is a means of converting atmospheric nitrogen (N2) into compounds that can be used by plants for growth. In turn, animals get the nitrogen they need to make amino acids and proteins and things through eating organic matter (such as plants or other animals). That could be all you need to know. Beyond that you might need to know that bacteria play a large role in breaking down N2 and ammonia (NH3). The ammonia dissolves into ammonium ion (NH4+). Bacteria also convert ammonium into either nitrite (NO2-) or nitrate (NO3-). Plants use both ammonium and nitrate. And so the cycle goes on and on and on, much like the Energizer Bunny.

One way you can try to remember this is to remember that high concentrations of ammonia can be very toxic to living organisms. Think about household chemicals and about how you are supposed to be careful with ammonia, and not mix it with bleach and other things because it will be deadly. Anyhoo, if you can remember that ammonia=bad, then you know that ammonia cannot be the end product of the nitrogen cycle, but must be an intermediate. And I always get nitrite and nitrate mixed up, but one way I try to remember it is that nitrite has two "i"s in it, and it's formula has a 2 in it (NO2-).

Anyway, I find that using little tricks like that help me remember things, you might want to try it. Also, don't get too stressed over it, that is probably the worst thing you could do. Trust me, the world won't end even if you do fail, you'll get other chances to pass it. I realize that if you've never failed anything the first time can be quite a blow, but we all have to experience it sometime (or multiple times like I did with OChem, lol) If you feel really worried about it, mention it to your teacher, or talk to your counselor about it. Anyway, hope I helped, if even a little.
