'Ritzy' Flavor Takes Ben & Jerry's Win

Flavor Will Not Go Into Production

Posted: 8:59 am CDT October 6, 2006

Jacksonville, Fla. -- Do you think Ritz crackers belong in ice cream?

The makers of Ben and Jerry's ice cream apparently do, because they've awarded a Jacksonville, Fla., woman the top prize in their make-a-flavor contest for her cracker idea.

Tasha Callister's "Puttin' on a Ritz" features a mixture of crushed, chocolate-covered Ritz cracker sandwiches filled with caramel, then mixed in vanilla ice cream with caramel and Ritz cracker swirls.

A spokesman for the Vermont-based company said the contest judges especially liked the flavor's playful name. Ben and Jerry's will make enough "Puttin' on a Ritz" ice cream for an ice cream party for Callister, but they have no plans to put it into production.

The finalists in the "Do Us a Flavor" contest were:

The finalists:

Robin Thorneycroft, 25, of Richmond, B.C., who suggested a flavor she calls Italian Renaissance, made of amaretto liqueur ice cream, cherry chunks and sliced almonds.

Timothy Link, 36, of Troy, Idaho, whose suggestion was Mojito, a lime-based sherbet with mint, brown sugar and rum added in.

Kerstin Karlhuber, 25, of Boston, whose Wackie Chan would be sweet cream and ginger-flavored ice cream, with chocolate-covered fortune cookie bits and fudge swirl.

Tasha Callister, 26, of Jackson, Fla., whose Puttin' on a Ritz would consist of vanilla ice cream, caramel and Ritz crackers.

Reina Chilton, 26, of Tempe, Ariz., who recommended "ApricotAbra," a mix of apricot chunks, dark chocolate, vanilla ice cream and tart apricot preserves.

More than 40,000 people submitted ideas for the contest.

That doesn't sound appealing to me. I can't imagine putting crackers in ice cream and eating them, crushed or not. The other combinations didn't sound good either, imo.

That doesn't appeal to me. I love Ritz crackers....in fact, they are probably my biggest weakness when it comes to food - but not in ice cream.

I think I would like to try it at least. Some people like salt and sweet. My grandma liked to eat potato chips with ice cream and I've heard of alot of people that like dipping their french fries into their frosty's at Wendys.

Oooo...is that what they're calling it - Puttin' on a Ritz? I love the Fred Astaire original and the 80's Taco cover version! Everytime I listen to that song, it reminds me of Ritz crackers, so this is a perfect theme.

Anyway....if the Ritz crackers are carmel and crushed/mixed in together with vanilla ice cream, then I wouldn't mind trying this flavor out. The carmel and the buttery rich taste will make it quite sweetish.

Hmmm... Ritz crackers and ice cream doesn't sound all that appetizing, but stranger combinations are actually tasty, so who knows?

Hmm, I like pretzels in ice cream, but crackers don't sound too tasty to me.
