LONDON (Reuters) - The pioneering porno movie "Deep Throat" was picked on Wednesday as one of 100 landmark films of all time in a new Radio Times guide.

The "Radio Times Guide to Films 2007," compiled by the magazine's film reviewers and staff, put "Deep Throat" up there with such cult classics as "Citizen Kane" and "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs."

Justifying the choice, Radio Times' film editor Andrew Collins said: "Deep Throat is not necessarily recommended for everyone -- it's a quite badly made film -- but to deny its influence would be pure snobbery."

"This is not a list of the greatest movies ever made -- we've had plenty of those already -- this is a chronological journey through cinema history pinpointing those films that changed the course of the industry, for better or worse, sometimes seismically, sometimes by smaller increments."

"Deep Throat" was made in 1972 and is just an hour long.

As far as cinema history as a whole, I can see why it was chosen. It is obvious that certain porn films have their place in film history. It is widely assumed that porn was "invented" in the fifties, when in fact, it goes back right to the invention of filmmaking.

Also, when it comes to Hollywood, it's not abt quality, but HOW MUCH $$$$ a film makes that seems to count.

A friend of mine graduated from UCSB (University of Santa Barbara) with a major in film and cinema (i think that's what it's called)...he has had one of his films showcased at independent film festivals and is currently backed by a production company to make a movie. Well, one of his courses at UCSB was a subject dealing with history in pornography. And yes, the students watched some porn movies, but not for what you think. They studied the earliest examples of porn movies (silent era) up to DEEP THROAT and some of the latest films. Of course, unless you are a student who is majoring in film, no one can just enter the class. He told me abt this class who was taught by a professor who is best friends with Nina Hartley, a former porn star. I was shocked and couldn't stop laughing when he told me abt this class. LOL

Rent it, you won't be sorry. It really goes into detail about the movie and how it affected society. Several classic porn stars are interviewed for the movie it was really well done. I suggest you get the unrated version though.

Can't say that I've ever seen the film, but it is of such legendary status, its inclusion on the list isn't so very surprising...
