Questions from a newbie

Hi all,
I am new here....well, I have only been here for a short time and made a few posts. I find this a fascinating board and I love to listen to all of your comments and opinions. I notice that there are some icons that look like flame (like on fire) and I was curious as to what they mean.
I have one more question. Is there a capacity on this board to 'im' (private message) others?

The folders that are burning mean the have 15 or more replies. And no...you can't IM. But you can get the AIM s/ns or w/e from ppl.
