Hi there.... I missed being on the board...I always wondered if Marie just tolerated Debra. Some episodes she said she loved her, but what do YOU think?

I think she grew to love her.

I think they loved each other like family. Sometimes you might not like family members and what they do, but that's just a way of life and they know you love them deep inside.

I suspect that's a doctored pic up there.

I think Marie just tolerated her. I mean look at the way she treated Amy so much better than Debra.

It was just a TV show of course, but, in real life, there are deffinate cases of in-laws who truly HATED each other; and it's possible that's what was being portrayed here.

It didn't look like love to me, far from it.

Marie is exackly like my mother-in-law.When she comes to visit, she checks how clean is the house, she comments about the way we raised the children, how we spend our money ect...She is incorrigeable it's the way she always was.Let's say that it's not love between us,we just tolorate each other. She is jalouse because I married her favorite son and she's still not over it,just like Marie.Thank God,my husband is not like Ray far from it :)

It was kind of love and hate. Marie was a smart cookie, really good at sizing things up. She knew Debra was a good wife and mother and was REALLY SMART--remember the time when Raymond sets the kitchen curtains on fire and he takes that little dinky hose to try to put it out. Debra comes running down, goes OH MY GOD, and immed. pulls out the fire estinguisher and puts everything out. Marie sees things like this, and knows that in the final analysis, Debra is a good wife for Ray. When things go awry, Debra's a rock, that she can be relied upon to think quickly and intelligently.

But Marie and Debra both have strong wills, and when push comes to shove Debra's not gonna put up with any crap. So...Marie was kind of threatened by Debra. Thank God Debra couldn't cook...or the feathers would have really flown!

I agree RichP! Marie LOVED the fact that she could cook and Debra couldn't cook her way out of a paper bag! (Lemon chicken anyone?)
I loved the episdoe where Marie tried to show Debra how to cook meatballs and she sabatoged the recipe!

Fact is that Deb's just not good enough for Ray, or Marie for that matter, LOL! Or us, as viewers. Thing is i think they always show the bad side of her, they did not balance it very well, she is not well rounded as a character. I would have divorced her in the second season.

It's hard to say because, at times they reconiled and said how much they lovedeach other, then, the next week, they were back to square one (it wasa central conflict on the show, so they couln't get rid of it).

Marei loved Debra in her own way - but Marie loved to control, and Debra wasn't going to let anyone control her,.

Except for the braciole, which drove poor Mary crazy. (Boy, Debra was really furious at Ray in this ep.--it's not nice (and not smart) to call Deb's one good dish "roadkill", with all the buttinsky's in the show, he should have known it'd get back to her)i

I would know from personal experience- my grandmother AKA the Mother In Law of my family- is the same way. I think the old hag (pardon my language) is just trying to 'tolerate' Debra. Mothers can be very jealous.

I think she may have cared for her in her own way, but to say that she loved her may be stretching it. I think for the most part she tolerated her.....and I certainly can't blame her! Debra was a bitch and thought she was better then everyone else, a point that Marie had mentioned when they were in that storm that knocked the power out.
