Well today we listened to the radio at school about what those guys did to the Twin Towers and stuff and that we declared war. But first we have to find out who did it.

BTW, if you are watching the news right now, did you see the plane fly through the tower on video? Cause I did it's really interesting.

This post is very irresponsible at this time of crisis and only adding to the fact that WE HAVE NO IDEA what happened. They're trying to pin it on Bin Laden, but don't be suprised if it's someone else, a la Oklahoma City. Please make responsible posts because you're only adding to the confusion. Speaking as a political scientist you are not helping matters in any way or form.

I just wanna point out one thing.

We've been, basically, on opposite sides of the fence w/ cuba since '60. Even THEY'RE behind us on this one.

In fact, most countries are....

I hadn't heard about Cuba. Very interesting. These people at school were throwing out Russia and China as possible countries responsible for this, which is highly unlikely. Bush has laid out an isolationist agenda from the beginning of his term, but the support from the Western European allies has been outstanding that I hope Bush does not alienate them, especially Tony Blair. We need them more then ever. Wow, I still can't believe Cuba.

Whew, folfan01, you startled me there!!! I've been up since the wee hours of the morning hearing nothing but the horrible tragedy in NY (I live on the West Coast, so I woke up to the news). And I am still up at 11:25 PST and haven't heard anything about war. For a moment there, you had me thinking that I should turn on my TV again in case I missed something.....

It was an "act of war". No one declared war. The US hasn't declared war since World War II. Also if it was Bin Laden, or a militant group, and not a country, war can't be declared anyhow.

I think that our #1 priority should be to find the people who are still alive in the rubble of what's left of the World Trade Center. Don't get me wrong, we need to find out who was responsible for this horrible attack, and strike back at them, but shouldn't we make sure that there are people left to rescue?

Thank you lesliem14. I was going to post up a long rant about posting stupid, unfounded, and ignorant remarks (seems that I've had to do that a couple of times since this all started), but you took care of it for me. I hope to god that this wasn't an American based terroist group.

Congress basically declared war though today, they have signed the thing saying that it is war against whoever did it so it's war.

Max-You have to be very careful with what the media is throwing out there because it is a lot of information. The broadcasters at points have been careless (Yes this means you Tom Brokaw).

Crash Course in American Politics 101 on the act of declaring war.

Step 1: The President must address Congress asking for a declaration of war (This is where FDR's Day of Infamy Speech comes from).

Step 2: Congress must then vote on whether to agree to the President's request or not.

The War Powers Act passed after Vietnam throws another wrinkle in this mess. Bush could commit troops without declaring war, but after 60 or 90 days he must go to Congress for reapproval.

It is very possible that Congress passed something today saying that the attack was an act of war and Bush has referred to it as an act of war, but Bush has not gone to Congress yet asking for war and at this point who would we declare war on? Until that question is answered the our counteractions will remain indefinite. Again, please be VERY deciminating with the information being thrown out there.

IMO, I think Bin Laden did it. I know there is other possiblities, but from what i have heard all of the info points to him.

Who do you all think done it?

BTW, some of the kids in my school said it was the Japs. But i dont think so.

Wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong, wrong! Please reference Leslie's post up above. We cannot declare war until we know who is responsible. You cannot declare war against individuals. If a nation is harboring the individuals responsible for this, Bush and Congress have promised that war would result. But until we reach a point of determining who is responsible and if anyone is standing in our way and preventing justice from being served, NO WAR HAS BEEN DECLARED!. Calling something an "act of war" is not the same thing as declaring war.

By the way, you should NEVER use the term "Japs" at a public message board. That can be found as really offensive.
And of course, the Japanese didn't do it...that's like saying Canada did it.

Anyway, I'm just glad other nations are standing by us. Just hearing Tony Blair's "Shoulder to Shoulder" speech gave me a lot of hope. We're not going to be alone on this one.

I'm going to ask that if you don't know for sure all the facts, please don't post gossip or rumors. Details are just trickling in on the hijakings, the people etc.

I'm also going to ask for us to be in constant prayer about this. Pray for the families, pray for the workers, pray for our President. And pray that these terrorists are found and destroyed.

And I declare right along with Bush that we will win In the Name of Jesus. Stay in prayer. And God Bless America.

I'm praying that Jesus will give us peace and healing. Let's help each other & keep praying.

I was about to post a rant about the disgusting use of the word "Japs" but Cokies beat me to it. I don't want to see words like that posted on this board EVER!
Some people on here (I'm not nameing names) are being really irresponsible in the discussion about this whole issue. It's a very sensitive issue and throwing statements like "I bet it was the Japs" around is not helping at all - if anything, it's making it worse. I for one think we should be more concerned with the familes and friends of those who died at the moment instead of trying to pin blame on anyone. I fully agree that those responsible should be found and severely punished but, please, let's just take some time to reflect on the matter and show some respect for those who lost their lives. I'm not a religeous person but I will be saying a prayer tonight.
And I want to that Lesliem14 for clearing up the matter of exactly what 'declaring war' really means. It seem some people here were pretty confused on the issue.

If war is declared we will win, bcause we have one of the strongest armys in the world.

do you know this will go down in history? It is worse than Pearl harbor! It will be in history books when we are like 40 and 50.

I still think it is wrong for us to overestimate our army. It's not the strength of the army, it is the strategy. And I'm not entirely sure we have that anymore.

Yes I know this will go down in history. And the events that follow. My mom reminds me of that fact all the time now.

I agree with Max. I'm just stating my opinion here, but I wouldn't overestimate it just yet. We have no idea who we are up against. All we know is that whoever did this has got the money to do it and the brains to plan it out.
