View Full Version : Do people think you are weird for buying DVD TV sets?

People tell me all the time "Why do you buy Roseanne, it's always on cable?" I always hear that stuff. It strikes me as odd so few people want to watch shows in their correct order and often for a fraction (if we are talking about minutes) of what a "90" mintues movie would cost them, not to mention when ever they want WITH often nice packaging with NO commercials. Part of me thinks it's my "collector mentality" but a lot of it is also a great value in terms of what you get. I mean c'mon a timeless classic like the Honeymooners for $20-$30? Lucy, Rockford, Star Trek, TZone, and all my faves are out on DVD and it is so utterly sweet. This is a good time to be alive!!

Well for me, I've always taped episodes of shows ever since I knew how to work a VCR. So it was natural for me to buy DVD season sets of shows. The people I know, know that I love TV. Most of them are impressed with my collection. Some of them might think it's weird, but no one has really said it to me.

However, a friend of mine, tells me I shouldn't tell girls about my collection on dates and stuff. Like I shouldn't brag about it.

Sometimes, the people at Best Buy, kind of look at me like "Here's the DVD guy again." One employee even said he bets I have a large collection by now.

I don't understand why fans of shows DON'T buy the season sets of their favorite shows. Unless it has to do with money issues. To me, if you're a fan, you'd want the season sets. What makes cable so much better than DVD sets? Like with "Pee-wee's Playhouse." It came out on DVD in 2004. Every single episode. Yet, it wasn't a big deal. Until it came to Cartoon Network. Then it was a big news story and people were like "I haven't seen this show in years!"

"I don't understand why fans of shows DON'T buy the season sets of their favorite shows."

Great point. I lived with my aunt and uncle for a short period of time while i saved money. I have a HUGE collection (well BIG) and I tried to lend them shows that I had that I knew they liked. They had no interest. They just sat and flipped through cable bored out of their minds. I think people watch TV for different reasons and in different ways, and I think some of it is just sad.

I see what you're saying... just like someone has a favourite music group but wouldn't necessarily buy their albums. I agree that people use tv for different purposes. There are different levels of fandom. Just like some poeple don't obsess over music, some don't obsess over television.

I buy all my childhood favourites on dvd and I know my brothers and sisters love them too, yet they just casually watch an episode, sometimes leave half way through and generally have little interest. Different strokes for different folks.

tv is bad now just like radio.....i buy dvd's of shows that tv won't show anymore. i wish i didn't have to, it was better when i COULD flip around and find something cool, but now it's pretty much the same crud on every channel....when i was kid ditching school it was always a bummer when it hit about 12:30 and there was nothing on but marcus welby or mike douglas, but those shows would probably be better than whatever any network is showing at that time slot nowadays. i guess i don't understand how people that actually LIKE tv watch the same things over and over, again when i was a kid i watched probably too much tv, and i'd read that complete guide to prime time tv shows book and think man, there's hundreds of shows that look like they were pretty cool, why doesn't anybody show them now? and that was over 20 years ago.....it's just part of the continuing narrowcasting of american culture, in a few years oldies radio will just play the same 5 songs over and over and the same show will be every channel all the time. maybe an exaggeration but not much.

You can dismiss collecting any kind of entertainment.

Why buy that album when you can hear the song on the radio?

Why buy that movie? It's always on cable.

It's a great time to collect TV DVDs. The prices are always dropping, and there are more and more shows becoming available. It's not just for "hardcore" TV fans anymore.

i wasn't really dismissing collecting tv dvd's. i have some myself, but they are of shows that aren't really shown anymore. i also collect records/cds, but again they are mostly things that aren't played on the radio all the time. if you do buy music/dvd's of things that are played all the time that's fine...i think some people are just frustrated that with the enormous number of "choices" cable/tv/radio etc offers, a lot of it is basically the same few things....oldies radio for instance 20 years ago played a much wider range of songs, now it's the same few over and over. much as tv stations up until the late 80's seemed perfectly happy to play a movie from 1940, 1960, or 1980, now for the most part it's all pretty new stuff.

Yeah, some people think it's strange.....I have every season of "Frasier", "Three's Company", and "Seinfeld" that has been released and sometimes the question is, why buy these DVDs when you can turn the TV on and see them? Well, several reasons, actually...

1) The TV version is edited. You get the full unedited episodes on the DVD. My God, I've been watching Three's Company all my life but I'll watch certain episodes on DVD and think, "Wow, I've NEVER seen that part before" and then you realize you never would if you didn't have the DVD.
2) You can watch the episode you want, when you want. If it's on TV you have to watch the episode they are showing.
3) Extras! A lot of the DVD sets have extras, like bloopers, scenes that were scrapped, interviews with the stars, etc. Maybe some people don't like watching that stuff, but I do.
4) No commercials.
5) If they ever stop airing the show you like for any length of time (in my case, "Benson"), then you always have the DVDs to fall back on. In fact, I wouldn't care if I never saw Benson on TV again if I had every season on DVD. It's nice, but not necessary.

I'm sure there are other advantages to having the shows on DVD that I'm not thinking of right now, but you get the gist of what I'm saying. ;)

I don't think it's weird at all, because you might have a favorite show that for one reason or another you miss episodes here and there. There are certain times of the year where I'm so busy with work, that my TV watching is erratic at best. The good thing about sets is that when you actually do have the time, you can then sit down and watch what you missed, as well as watch some of the episodes that you did see, and liked, and want to see again. You remember funny lines that the characters said, and for me at least, that never gets old.

^Obviously we on the boards do not think it's weird, heck we are on a TV MESSAGEBOARD, I was mostly talking about your friends and family.

"Best case" scenario (in my circle) is my friend Mike who likes the X Files, Millennium and Lost and buys those sets... but then that's IT. Most people I have noticed also only like a few shows; me I'm all over the map. I have Millennium and the Flinstones... Andy Griffith and Alias..... have you noticed people in general only have a few favorites?

Let me explain. In the first place, it is my dvd collection and my money. I never really watched Roseanne that much on cable. But when I bought the dvds and started watching them I found the show to be funnier on dvd. I think that comedy definitely has a timing thing and I found that Roseanne was a riot!! Another thing I love about dvds is that sometimes you can collect shows that are not on tv and there are no commercials. And I think the prices are reasonable. Compared to movies you get more bang for your buck. There is one show I won't buy on dvd though and that is Married With Children. It is just not the same without the theme song! Silly I know but I will just tape that show. Other than that, dvd all the way!!! You think you have it bad-I have Cheers, Mash, Frasier, and Murder She Wrote all trying to find space in my room. UGGGHH. I think I will have to move to a bigger house!! But I am not weird!!!

....as those people in the "Stone Age" who (virtually) collected all issues of NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC, LIFE, LOOK, COLLIER'S, THE SATURDAY EVENING POST, and so on...and those phonograph record enthusiasts {"What the heck are THEY?"} who bought every disc that emphasized "sound effects" and "exotic music" in Hi-Fi [or STEREO] in the '50s and early '60s, or collections of (fill in the name of ANY great music legend of the last century). Why should collecting DVD "box sets" of your favorite TV shows be any different????

people definitely think I'm a bit odd for buying TV Shows, but it's probably because I own over 100 sets, and I'm only 13 years old. Poeple also wonder where I get the money for all the DVD's I own. SOmetimes I don't even know. I mean, If i like a show to where I watch it every day and haven;t missed one episode, why not buyit? ean, I can watch the episode whenever I want, without commercials, and I love watching the extras on the set.

I don't understand why fans of shows DON'T buy the season sets of their favorite shows. Unless it has to do with money issues.

That's the ONLY reason why my DVD collection is rather small. If it wasnt for that, it'd be bigger than nobody's business.

Also I'd agree definitely with BensonFan's reasons as for getting a series on DVD. If a show I KNOW is on DVD, I usually wont record it. That is unless no future seasons plan to be released, or if its a show that has really low probability of being released, then I'll definitely tape it to be on the safe side. Also if it's a show from the '90's or earlier, I'll really want to keep the tape since it is an original broadcast.

I've always been proud of my collection where it's full of TV shows, which it is, or cartoons, or movies. I love getting shows that I grew up on so my kids some day can do the same, instead of the mostly trash that is on now adays. What can I say, I was born in 1980 and love living in the 80's forever.

I only buy sets of the TV shows I really like, or if it's a show I've never seen before and am interested in, so I don't have too big of a collection...nobody I know really cares either way about me buying TV DVD sets. They mostly just think it's strange that I only watch old shows and wouldn't watch more recent shows if you tied a rope around my neck and ordered me to watch.

Well...if you like a certain show and you want to be able to watch it anytime you want to, not just when it's on TV, then buying DVDs would be a good solution. Everyone sees it differently, some may think it's pointless, others may think it's a good idea, but that happens with everything now-a-days right? So... just do what you feel like doing and buy what you feel like buying. Don't pay attention to the fact that some people think you're weird.

I have been watching I Love Lucy for 45 years and people think I'm weird for that. I purchased the box set and watch it for my own pleasure. No one else I know would sit through the episodes dozens of times. It is really nice to be able to watch a particular episode when I want, and not wait for it to appear on TV. The set is also helpful in looking for info and trivia, collecting music, and to be able to compare seasons and have an understanding of the evolution of the show. Also the ability to pause allows for further scrutiny.

 i don't think its werid i mean i have some box sets and thats a good thing i think cause cable tends to cut some parts out of the show and so buying it on dvd is better cause then you get to see the whole thing! besides if they didn't do that then i think all of the companys whould go out of bussiness! so again no i don't think its werid besides its your money do what you want with it i say!

I actually don't even have cable. I do not tend to put my money towards things that I'll have nothing to show for it. I just buy sets and watch what I WANT instead of some random cable company telling me what to watch. If you haven't gone this route, think about it:)

well ok  i'm not saying you shouldn't send money on something you don't want all i'm saying is that it might be a good thing to have box sets in case the "bad cable company"! want to tell you want you can or cannot watch and i don't have cable anyway i have satillite tv :) and i think that buying box sets isn't a waste of money its only a waste of money if you don't by the whole thing and just keep on buying them one at a time! so go on that little route 66!! lol!

My thoughts exactly-- I was born in 1981, and as such, I grew up with "Hart to Hart," "Dynasty", "Hill Street Blues," and "St. Elsewhere," among others. Those are from the '80's, and I am very much a child of the '80's. I wouldn't waste my money on (or be caught dead with) any of the garbage of the '90's and today ("Seinfeld" and "Raymond" are prime examples; at least with me, I never found anything funny about either of them). "Star Trek: Voyager" is an exception, however-- that was one of the better series of the '90's, at least to me. However, you have to be a virtual millionaire to get even one season of that on DVD. I wish the prices would come down.

I agree about STAR TREK: VOYAGER. That and NEXT GEN. are my 2 favorite ST series, but VOY. is SO, SO EXPENSIVE!!!
I rented season 4 from Netflix mostly to see if it's worth shelling out a hundred bucks for-but it's not. Don't get me wrong, though-the extras are GREAT!

I think it's a good idea to buy your favorite shows on DVD. I plan on buying the whole South Park DVD collection when i have the extra cash, it's kind of expensive but I think it's well worth it. That show makes me laugh so much! So no, I don't think people are weird if they buy TV DVD sets.

Some people buy the collection of their favorite TV Shows on DVD because they want to watch it over and over again. Especially when they are one of the fans of that TV Shows.

no, not at all. besides, some of my favourite shows such as the fresh prince are hardly shown on terrestrial tv in england, anyway. and yet i can purchase them on dvd. yes it costs me a couple of english pounds, but at least there are no adverts, i can choose the episodes i want to watch and skip the ones i don't like and the picture and sound quality is of a very high standard. compared to the old VHS tapes. besides, if you're a fan of these shows, they make great collectors items. especially if they have been off the air for a considerable long period:)

I think you have to be a "collector" to appreciate any kind of collector. I've always been a collector and am now collecting TV shows. What I tend to do is wait until the first season of something goes on sale ... some sets are just sooo expensive. Unless it is something I just have to have the instant it comes out. :)

If a set is too expensive in the stores, try checking out eBay - but be sure it's a sealed set or "viewed once by owner" to be sure its authentic. You don't want to find yourself with a bunch of ripped DVDs of a show that's available on the market.

Watching a show minus commercial interruptions and also seeing the entire episode is a big plus for me. I find that I tend to watch my DVDs rather than cable and only catch shows I really really like, the current season of a series I enjoy for instance.

Right now I'm immersed in Dark Angel, Remington Steele, Mary Tyler Moore, 21 Jump Street, Angel, Buffy and X-Files.

One good thing about DVDs - they don't take up as much space as VHS tapes do!!

Happy collecting everyone! :D

I got every season of SBTB and all that have come out so far for Full House and I am 21. Half the sets from those shows I didn't even watch after I bought them. I have outgrown the shows but it's more of a sentimental thing. It's nice to have shows that you grew up on.

That's exactly how I think. Why should I put my money into series, especially trash sitcoms like "Seinfeld" and "Raymond" (neither of which I give a smoke about), that I might not even watch all the way through? On the other hand, I have seen every episode at least once on all of the DVD's that I have of "Hart to Hart," "Hill Street Blues," "Dynasty", and "St. Elsewhere". Those were some very good series back then, and to me, they still are.

(Note: "Seinfeld" and "Raymond" were trash to some people, including me-- that does not mean that I intend to prevent those people who actually liked those shows from seeing them. It's the chocolate & vanilla theory-- different people like different things.)

People don't think i am wierd for buying tv shows on dvd. although, i do think some think i am wierd for the shows i like to watch. (generally classics from the 50's, 60's, and 70's) I guess what i have to worry about is the fact that my 5 year old daughter knows who arnold ziffel and thing from the addams family are. my family has always teased me about that. but, she does get to see current shows and cartoons too.
