For those of you who didn't know, CD's wasn't invented until 1992. CD's used to be more bigger and were called records and were played with a record player, does anybody have one? I don't have one but I want one coz I'm so curious to know how they work/what its like, i've never really seen one in real life  just in the movies.

For those of you who didn't know, CD's wasn't invented until 1992.
That would be 1982. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Compact_discs They weren't very popular here in the US in the early 80's, though. It took a while for the novelty of CDs to catch on here.
And yes, I've seen them. I own a few records. When I was growing up, my parents had a LP player (that's another name for the record player) and a lot of LPs for it. I think they finally got rid of it sometime around 1991 or 1992, because it was around the time they purchased an actual top-of-the-line home theater system that used cassettes and CDs instead of LPs.
I also had a Fisher-Price record player toy when I was a kid in the 80's... I still have it. Dunno where it is, though. It looked like this one (http://cgi.ebay.com/1971-Fisher-Price-Music-Box-Record-Player-w-5-records_W0QQitemZ250016601879QQihZ015QQcategoryZ50306QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem).

I remember my parents had one in about 1994. They never used it, and I have no idea where it is now.
My parents had a record player when I was growing up, and they liked listening to an album or two from time to time.
Then we got indoor plumbing and Lincoln was shot.

We have a record player at home (another name for them is turntable.) I play it quite frequently - my parents have a large collection of records. The sound and quality are both really good.
CDs are good, but never underestimate the record player! :)

I don't have one, but I'm pretty sure my Dad has one buried somewhere in the garage, along with all of his old LP's and 45 singles! :talk:

Yes I own one. I was too curious about records so I bought a new record player. A really great investment, not.

Well if you have LPs (or 45s) it would be a good investment. If not I dont know why anyone would want one now, unless its just for nostalgia purposes.

Actually, Bruce Springsteen's 1984 album Born In The USA was the first album released on CD for the public to buy. CDs started to become really popular by 1987 and in May 1988 CDs were selling as much as records. By 1992 records were no longer.

Yup, I have one and I love it! :biglove: It's not a vintage one--it's one of the recent models that P.C. Richards put out a year or two ago (has a radio and c.d. player built in too!) It has a very retro feel to it, though...now I can play all my records from the 70's that my parents own ;)
My roommate was going to buy a turntable last year.
One of his favorite bands (Wilco) released their latest album on vinyl and he bought a copy. I talked him out of it. We already have enough electronic stuff we don't use.
I have a record player, and I love it. Admittedly, vinyl LPs are not as convenient as CDs (which I have an abundance of), but a well-mastered and well-pressed record, when taken care of properly, sounds better than its digital counterpart on a good system.

We have 2 record players my parents have one that needs a new needle and those parts are hard to find since they don't make record players anymore. I have a fisher price record player I got when I was little and I remember when mcdonalds used to give records away with there happy meals I would play those records on my record player all the time. Gosh I love records those are the first form of music you could buy and listen in your home. My favorite records we have our the Bill Cosby one's those are so funny. My grandparents have a real old record player that's built in a cabinet and suprisingly enough it still works and they have had it for over 30 years, call me crazy but I really want to get that after they die.

They sure do! (http://www.amazon.com/s/ref=sr_ss_1/103-0072013-9117449?ie=UTF8&search-alias=electronics-aps&field-keywords=record%20player)

Almost twenty years ago, I got a good deal on a stereo system, complete with cabinet. It had a turntable, dual cassette player/recorder, tuner, and amplifier. It was a package deal including the turntable, which I still have, but it's just collecting dust. I think I used the turntable once or twice.
I only use the amplifier, cassette player and tuner now--and at that very rarely. I mostly now use smaller digital electronics now (e.g., iPod).
I remember the HiFi systems of the fifties and sixties, when we played 45's and 33lps a lot (in the early to late sixties).

Only a few years ago, I found a Detrola unit at K-Mart that plays records (78,
45 and 33 rpms), CDs, cassettes and radio. I have a huge library of records, as
well as tapes and CDs so I was glad to find something that would play all of them.

Oh, yeah. We used to own this huge stereo that had lit-up speaker lights and the middle opened up to reveal the turntable. It was wood-colored, and it was quite nostalgic! It was a huge piece of furniture. I don't remember exactly what happened to it, but I think it was given away or something about 7-8 years ago. It was black wood color, but it was about the same size as the one in this image:
http://www.jaegerandernst.com/media/portfolio/furniture/large/4263.JE.H.jpg
Although, it's a different style/model. I will look around to see if I can find a pic or a very similar one and then will post it here.
As for today, I own two Ace of Base collectors DJ vinyls which are records. I have those well-preserved. I don't have a record player to play them on, but I do keep them with me in my collection.
I remember when my sister and I were younger, we would lay out some of the smaller records on our beds. We would stand on that stereo cabinet and jump onto our beds cracking those records. We liked the sound of the cracking! Silly us!
Allison, I do remember those plastic Fisher-Price record player and discs! Haha. I never owned one, but my childhood friend, Leah, had one! Boy, those things could really play good music!

Oh, so do I. I love being able to brag about having all that vinyl, and a turntable to go with it. It's one of the great things about being old, or at least middle-aged.
Hey, check this quote out from the Kim Possible episode "The Golden Years."
NANA: (OC) Present time, kids!
(Cut to NANA. JIM and TIM stand before her. NANA is holding a stack of records)
NANA: For Jim and Tim, the gift of music.
(JIM takes the top record off of the stack)
JIM: Wow, vinyl!
(TIM takes the rest of the stack from NANA)
TIM: I've heard of these, but I've never actually seen one before.
JIM: Let's rip 'em into mp3 files!
As much as I like old vinyl, I too would love to rip them into MP3 files. And I know how I can do it too. I also know that some records sound better a little worn out, like for example the Styx album "Paradise Theater."

In the early 1970s, my older sister owned a record player thta played only 45s. Two of the 45s she had were Paul McCartney's "Uncle Albert/Admiral Halsey" and Ringo Starr's "You're Sixteen."
My brother owns a Pioneer turntable.

LOL, I had one until about 3 years ago... it was a Sears stereo system I bought when I was in high school, about 1975... Had a turntable and an 8 track player/recorder. Had great sound, considering it was an all in one unit...
Only ended up buying a couple of 8 track tapes for that thing, I mostly used it for recording... but when we recorded an album, we'd always get that annoying loud 'click' when the tracks changed in the middle of a song...
But by connecting a cassette deck to that stereo, I had a turntable, 8 track and a cassette player... couldn't ask for much more than that, all bases were covered!!

I got a sesame street record player when I was 3. Even though it was 1986, so obviously CD's were around, but my mom had a lot of old children's records she wanted to play for my brother and I. So, instead of using her nice old stereo record player, we got the sesame street one. I still have it. Haven't used it in years though. We do have records. I should try it sometime to see if it works. :)

I don't own a record player but I used to when I was a kid. I used to own a lot of vinyl records when I was growing up. Also I remember when my parents had a stereo with a turntable, 8 track player, AM/FM radio and a cassette player in it. My dad had a few 8 tracks back then. I remember when my dad used to play his Bob Dylan, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens, and Rod Stewart albums on the turntable and his Linda Ronstadt 8 tracks. It would be cool to own a record player for nostaglic reasons. I probably have some vinyl records at my parents' house.

I have a 70's G.E. record player. And i bought one of those combination cd/cassette/radio/record players for my parents for christmas of 2005. Since they still have tons of records and their record player had broken a few years ago.

I wouldn't mind getting one that's able to make CD-R's & CD-RW's of LP's, 45's and 78's at least.

I have several record players. Three of them work great. The rest of them need work. Three of my record players are pretty old. They have tubes and they have 16,33,45 & 78 speeds. All of my record players are fully automatic. Automatic record players were the best record players made. Three of my record players have a feeler. A feeler is a button that's located either on the wheel or right beside of the wheel. A feeler eliminates the need for a size switch. I've loved record players for nearly 30 years. I wish they hadn't stopped selling records. I have a large record collection but it would be nice to be able to buy the new songs on records.
