View Full Version : Do You Look Your Age?

Family Ties Forever!

Do you look your age or do you look younger/older? I know we have had a few threads in the past about this, but I thought I would ask again.

Today at a doctor's office, a lady couldn't believe how old I was. She thought I was 14-15. She couldn't believe that I'm almost 28. I'm almost always mistaken for being younger, sometimes much younger, than I really am. My mother says I just have that 'youthful' look.

What about you?

It could go either way, but people rarely nail it. If I have a beard, people think I'm in my early-mid thirties. When I'm clean-shaven, I'm often mistaken for late teens or early twenties.

I really don't know...

I turn 21 in a little over a week from now. When I was 18 going on 19, people asked me if I was 21. This actually happened quite often when I was younger. People thought I was about 2-3 years older than my actual age. But now, I think I just look my age. *shrug*

Im 20 years old going on 21, and people ask me if im still in high school

From your profile:

Date of Birth:
May 7, 1986

You're nowhere close to turning 21. That's like saying I'm 21, going on 22 when I won't be 21 for another week.

The funny thing about my age, is half the people I meet tell me I look older, while the other half tells me I look younger. So, there's really no way for me to answer the poll question.

Depends on the clothes I've got on, and how long it's been since I've been near the razor and shaving cream.

I have the same problem. I'm 25 and look much younger. It doesn't help that I'm only 4'11". Think of it this way: when you and I are 50, we'll probably still look young :D

I look younger than my age; I am 37 but people think I'm in my mid-twenties
and/or younger. Occasionally, some think that I'm over 25 but they wouldn't give me 37; it all depends but, I like the fact that I look younger than my age.

People always assume I'm younger. It runs in my family. All my siblings and my parents always look much younger than their actual ages. It's also happening to the newer generation in my family.

So, I think I look my age, but...

I'm 25, and I teach high schoolers for a living. When I go to places like games or shows, I ALWAYS am given a student ticket...I don't complain when I'm saving money...I guess that's probably kinda bad, but hey! I'm a teacher! Money's tight lol!

When I monitor the halls, guests to the schools always comment that I blend in w/the kids! I guess it's a good thing.

Yep, I've actually told her that many times myself. There was this one picture she showed me once, where she was smoking, and I swear, she looked like she belonged on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine. Absolutely beautiful woman!!!

No. I have always looked younger than my age. It used to bother me when I was in my late teens/early 20s when people would think I was still in high school or when I was carded. Now it doesn't bother me as much because then I figure once I am older in age, I will still have that youthful look.

As far as I can tell, I look about my age now, but it hasn't always been this way. I looked younger until I was in my late-20's. So much younger that I actually used to be approached by child molestors well into my adulthood.

puke: :thumbsdow :barf: :goaway: pissed: :stupid:

Luckily I don't have that problem anymore.

I had someone once ask me if I was old enough to drive :D

Back in January/February, I bought the DVD of The Goonies, which had a 12-rating. At the till, the woman there asked me how old I was. I told her I was 17, and she asked if I had any identification that showed my age. Fortunately, I did have a card that had my date of birth on it.

She was very nice about it, and told me I had a young-looking face. She said when I'm older, I'll enjoy people thinking I'm younger - and she's right. My sister told me I should have yelled at her for asking for some identfication, but I told her there was no point in making a fuss over it - she was only doing her job.

Most people think I'm younger and are amazed when I tell them I'm almost 57. They figure me for like 48 or so. At the same time, there are some who actually think I'm older than 57, which doesn't quite make sense. And it's usually people a bit older than I. They'll ask, "So Gene, how are you enjoying retirement?" I'll remind them that I'm not ready to retire anytime in the near future! Yikes!!

For those that think I look younger, I don't think it's mere flattery. I'm short, bald (I lost my hair fairly young), but I am in reasonably good shape. Except for some flecks of gray in my beard, my hair (what's left of it) is still black, with a strand of gray here and there. Mostly, I don't act, walk or think "old". There is nothing wrong with growing old, I just don't envision myself as the doddering stereotype and will take care of my health to resist being that way for as long as I can.

I hope your back gets better.

thanks, I have some good days (not great days). I have come to grips with having back surgery soon, it should help in the long run. I have been fighting this for over 2 years now, with no relief in sight without surgery.

After having a major flare-up this past week, I had to go to my younger sister's wedding this Saturday, what a bad day it was.........hot, humid, kinda disorganized, etc. It was a casual event, so that made it a little more relaxing. I spent most day worrying about how I must have looked to everyone else, I had to use a cane the whole day and lean on anything that I could (it felt like everyone was staring, and asking "what happened to him?"). I am 33, most of the people were in their 20's, some 40's which made me feel pretty bad. There were 3 older folks, 70's I think and they were getting around well. The groom's grandmother asked me if I wanted to borrow her walker for the afternoon, that was sooooooooo embarrassing.

The worst part was my sister wanted me to walk her down the aisle, something that she had wanted for a long time. That was not possible in my condition since I could not walk up-right, and it would have taken forever to get there. Feeling like I ruined her day, kinda did it for me so I went home early. My sister is a very bright, outgoing girl (23), has one child and very determined to do what she wants in life, so for that I applaud her! So, to make up for not being able to help her on Saturday, I am working on making all of the digital photos into a movie and setting up a website for her & and my new brother-in-law. Most of the people at the wedding had their own digital cameras, so they all emailed me their pics and I combined them together. The project is coming along nicely.

Never thought that I could develop "Degenarative Disc Disease" in my 30's, the doctors said the process actually started in my late 20's and is now becoming more noticable. Anyway, thanks for listening to my rambling.

Sorry to year you've been having difficulties with your back.

In spite of my purported "youthfulness" as I described, I do occasionally have bouts with "degenerative arthritic disc disease", as the doctor called it, but not as bad as I used to. For me it started in my late twenties and it was bad until my mid-forties.

When my doctor first used that term "degenerative arthritic disc disease" it scared the heck out of me. I mean, it sounds horrible. When I was in my twenties and in the Army, we had to carry incredibly heavy amounts of equipment for our parachute jumps--so heavy, in fact, that someone would have to give you a hand to get up on the plane. Basically, my back was abused for three and a half years. I think that's what started it all. Well, I thought I would just get progressively worse, but I haven't. I remember, between the ages of approx. 27 to 37, every other year, or so, I'd get crippled up into such excruciating pain, I could barely move, and--if I moved at just the wrong angle, it would be agonizing. So, I know exactly what you're describing. The funny thing (funny's not the best choice of words, I know) is that I'd never know when it would hit me. Seemed not to have to do with lifting things though, but how I bent--like when feeding the dog or something.

What I do now, is--basically stay in shape. I do this by walking every day. At least four of those days out of the week I walk for thirty minutes. I watch what I eat, (not fanatically though) and most importantly, I keep Advil or generic ibuprofin around, because regardless of how in shape I am, the back thing can hit any time. I'm alert for the signs of it, which, if they occur, most likely will happen in the morning. Advil, if you can take it, is a lifesaver for people with degenerative disc disease. Somehow, Tylenol isn't good for this type of thing. Aspirin works a little better, but not as good as Advil. And be proactive about it. Don't wait till your back has totally gone out to take the Advil. I find that I'll have to take the Advil for a day or two, or as soon as I sense my back is getting better. Also, along with walking, I do a light exercise regimen every morning that involves stretching out my back. (But caution here! During a back attack, I do not exercise. Period. For me it makes it worse. When the danger is past, I resume my exercising again.) In all these things, especially regarding the medicine, check with your doctor first. If you belong to an HMO, they have great charts with exercises to strengthen your back and stretch it out properly. Even with all this, still keep the Advil around.

Since I've taken the above measures, I haven't been crippled up with a major back attack for over ten years. I hope you get major relief. I know it's no fun, to say the least.
