It has been speculated for weeks. Rumors were flying at the recent Comic-Con event that Brokeback Mountain star Heath Ledger was to don the make-up of The Joker.

They are rumors no more. Warner Bros. has confirmed that Ledger will play The Joker in director Christopher Nolan's next Batman film. Furthermore, it was announced that the next film will be titled The Dark Knight -- something that's sure to please all the hardcore fanboys out there.

Christopher Bale will once again wear the black cape and tall, pointing ears of Batman. The same ones that he resuscitated with last year's Batman Begins. The film grossed $205 million domestically.

Nolan's brother Jonathan is set to write the new script and production will begin early next year. It should arrive in theaters in May or June of 2008.

LOS ANGELES - Heath Ledger will play the Joker in “The Dark Knight,” the sequel to last year’s “Batman Begins.”

Christian Bale will again star as Batman, and Christopher Nolan will return as director, Warner Bros. studio announced Monday.

“The Dark Knight” is set to begin production next year.

Ledger, 27, was nominated for a best actor Oscar for his role in 2005’s “Brokeback Mountain.”

"Our challenge in casting the Joker was to find an actor who is not just extraordinarily talented but fearless,” Nolan said in a statement issued by Warner Bros. “Watching Heath Ledger’s interpretation of this iconic character taking on Christian Bale’s Batman is going to be incredible.”

Jack Nicholson played the Joker in 1989’s “Batman,” starring Michael Keaton as Batman and directed by Tim Burton.

I would of thought they would cast someone older. However, Ledger is talented and I trust Nolan's vision for Batman.

I don't see Heath Ledger as The Joker. Then again, I didn't see Michael Keaton as Batman back in 1989, so hopefully I'll be pleasantly (or creepily) surprised.

As much as I LOVE Heath Ledger (and he's talented), I just can't picture him in that role. But maybe I'll be surprised :)

I have to agree. If anybody, his Brokeback costar Jake Gyllenhall has a better "Joker" face.

Heath is definitely an interesting choice to play the Joker... I'm sure he has the acting chops to pull the roll off with ease...

I thought it was Jake also. I read that one of the stars from Brokeback was to star as the Joker and I immediately thought it was Jake until now. Oh well............

Which makes my post earlier even funnier LOL

But yeah, he would be a better joker. I wouldve also liedk to see Steve Carell, or Paul Bettany, or Johnny Depp. Jim Carrey would be awesome too, even Robin Williams hwo was supposed to play The Joker in the first Batman, and also The Riddler would be aweosme. But we'll see.

Damn! You beat me to it Jack!

Nice work.

Anyhoo, I'm not too sure about Heath as Joker. I guess I have a few years to make up my mind.

I was more intrigued by the rumor flying around a few months back that it was going to be Michael Keaton.

I trust Nolan completely. He hasn't done a bad movie yet. Ledger's an interesting choice, but I like it. No one would've thought of him.

How's about Sean William Scott, or even better, Dennis Quaid as The Joker? Dennis Quaid does have the perfect "Joker" smile, after all.
