I have to agree with those, as well as Gleason as Ralph Kramden. As far as Carroll O'Connor as Archie Bunker, you'd never know how liberal he really was. He played someone the complete opposite of his true self.

IIRC, in recent years, Rob Reiner stated that when they were taping "Archie Bunker", Carroll O'Connor was more liberal than he was.

Here's a funny story about Rob Reiner. I think he talked about this on a Tonight Show appearance. This took place when he was a kid of about 13 or 14 years old on the Mary Tyler Moore set with his dad Carl. He really had the hots for MTM, so one day with the raging hormones, she walked past him and he squeezed her butt. He said he could not help himself. MTM told Carl about it. Rob said his dad told him not to do it again, but had this "thumbs up" look about him, like he wished he could get away with it and that he was happy that his son liked girls.

You know, before you posted this, I was thinking most of the cast from "Bewitched" was perfect for their roles. (Although I'm not a fan of the 2nd Darren.) But Dick York, Elizabeth Montgomery, Agnes Moorehead (Endora), Paul Lynde (Uncle Arthur), Maurice Evans (Sam's father), Marion Lorne (Aunt Clara), Erin/Diane Murphy (Tabitha), Alice Pearce (I preferred her over Sandra Gould) and Abner (I forget his name)...all were great in their roles, IMO.

It's like you were reading my mind RedWhine56...I COMPLETELY agree with you regarding the perfect casting in that series. I was debating including all the names you mentioned in your posting as "perfect for their roles"in my initial post. I too much preferred Dick York over Dick Sargent and for me, Alice Pierce will always be the "one and only" Mrs. Kravitz...she was PERFECT in that role...truly hilarious yet vulnerable and totally lovable. What's interesting is as a kid I remember coming home and watching the color eps of Bewitched after school , so for me Sandra Gould was the first Mrs Kravitz I was exposed to. I always thought she was kinda miserable and mean...so different from Alice's portrayal. It wasn't until years later that I got to see the original first two B&W eps with the original Mrs. Kravitz and boy was I surprised...I thought she was SO much better in the role.
Bewitched is one of my all-time top five fave shows.
Last weekend I was watching some of the Brady Bunch Marathon on TVLand and they mentioned between episodes that Gene Hackman was originally up for the role of Mike Brady. While it certainly would have been interesting to see Hackman in that role, Robert Reed will alwyas be Mike Brady. I know Robert Reed had some problems with being Mike Brady, but he was great in that part.
Also Alan Alda was a much better Hawkeye than Donald Sutherland.
;)

I think it has more to do with who you are accustomed to seeing. No one will ever associate Gene Hackman with Mike Brady since he never had the role. We'll never know. Same with Alan Alda as Hawkeye. Sutherland had the role for a lone movie. Alda was the character for 11 seasons.

I think much of that is true, but then that's what makes an actor very good in a role - if you cannot imagine anyone else being able to do it as well or better.
Kind of the opposite of this is when you see someone who was perfect in their role & made it stand out in your mind, even if it was not a leading role. Then you see them in something else & they are just awful. Two people (for me) whom this describes is Teresa Russell & Margaret Whitton. Teresa was PERFECT as the husband killer in the movie, "Black Widow" but just awful in everything else I've seen her in. Margaret Whitton was the boss' wife in the movie "Secret of My Success" - perfect. But I've seen her in one or two other things & while not awful, her character just didn't stick with you. My husband says other factors may be involved, such as the director. Plus, the parts may be designed to be unforgettable or forgettable - similar to when they want a naturally beautiful actress to be "plain-ed down" for a particular part.
