You have a three gallon can, a five gallon can, and an unlimited supply of water.
The object is to put exactly four gallons of water in the five gallon can....how do you do it?

Mrs G: Uh, okay.
Nat: Jo wait!

Nat: YES! YES!
Mrs G: WHAT!!
Jo: I'm gonna roll it through their front door and then POW boy POW, dead Kawasaki's all over the street.
Mrs G: I take it you didn't get the job. May I have those matches?Please!
Jo: That's right, I DID NOT GET THE JOB! DID ANYBODY MISS THAT? I DID NOT GET THE JOB! Go ahead Blair, hit me with your best shot, go ahead.
Blair: (silence)
Nat: Oh Blair, you can do better then that.

Okay... fill the three gallon up, and pour it into the five gallon. So you have 3 gallons in the five gallon. Then fill the 3 gallon up and pour as much as you can into the five gallon. So you have 1 gallon in the three gallon and the five gallon is filled. Then dump out the five gallon. Pour the one gallon that is in the three gallon into the five gallon. So the three gallon is empty and the five gallon has one gallon. Then fill up the three gallon and pour it into the five gallon. You have 4 gallons of water. I think I did the math right.

First, fill up the 5 gallon bucket. Pour that into the three gallon bucket. Empty the 3 gallon bucket, then pour the 2 gallons that are left in the 5 gallon bucket into it. So there are 2 gallons in the 3 gallon bucket. Fill the 5 gallon bucket again, and fill up the 3 gallon bucket. 4 gallons remain in the 5 gallon bucket.
