I got this one from a friend of mine.

There are 5 books, each with 100 actual pages on a shelf. A bookworm eats from the first page of the first book to the last page of the last book. How many pages does the bookworm eat?

Now, does that mean 100 pages for reading or 100 including title and dedication and everything? And when you say actual pages does that mean there are 100 pieces of paper? So, there's not like page 1, and the back of that is page 2?

Yes

That is correct. There are 100 pieces of paper in each book.

499? 498? Because TO the last page doesn't mean he actually eats the last page.. and the from the first page could go either way, really.

It's either 498, 499 or 500.
http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/quest.gif Did it eat the first and last pages?

Nope. Let me clarify. It ate the first page of the first book through and including the last page of the last book.

Nope. The front and back covers are included in the 100 total pages.

Each page is 2 pages....

Nope. That doesn't matter. Let me clarify, I want to know how many pages it actually through. 1 page = 1 page.

Like the cover is really like 1 sheet so 5 covers including 500 pages is 505

Nope, the covers are included in the 100 page figure. The answer is not 505.

I'll admit, this one is a tricky one, but if you think about it, it is pretty simple. This one had me stumped for a bit.

I'm sure there's some logical answer... but obviously I'm not getting it...

Alright... the answer is "undefined". Because it is not said that those five books are the only books he was eating that day.

Makes sense to me.

I just put 5 books on a shelf pretending they all had 100 pages and came up with 509.

Nope, but I'll give you a hint. Look at the books on the shelf and think about what pages the bookworm eats. Think about it.

102 because you said it eats from the first page to the last of the book.

Bootsy Whoosh

Could it be 401?

I got that figure because not all of the books necessarily are arranged in the same way, so that the first page is alligned on the right, as it normally would be. Say, for example, the last book were either a Japanese or Chinese book (which are opened from the right and read backwards from how we read) or a book that was turned upside down. That would make the last page of the last book the first page of the last book that the worm enocountered.

I hope that made at least some sense! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/crazy.gif

oooor....

Ok, I just happened to think...I was assuming that the bookworm starts eating on the right and goes left.

However, if the bookworm starts eating from the left and goes right, then it ate 302 pages (counting the first page of the first book and the last page of the last book.

B/c it ate the entirety of the 3 books in the middle (300 pages), but it only ate the first page of the first book (1), and the last page of the last book (1), as the last page was the first one it encounterd.
