WACO, Texas -- Air conditioning actually was invented back in 1842 by a
Florida physician named John Gorrie. He built a compressor for ammonia that
could create ice. He got a patent for his ice-making machine, but not much came of the idea for residential use for another century.

The technology that used compressed and expanded gas to chill air and make
ice was employed in selected commercial applications long before it became
available for home use.

For one thing, few Americans could afford such a luxury during the Depression
or in the tightly controlled economy of World War II.

Once air conditioning became affordable for the masses, the masses raced to
forget all the tricks they had long used to survive summer heat waves without
machines that manufacture conditioned air.
