hey all i been wondering what ever happend to actor who played Barney hefner on All in the family and Archie bunkers place he was really funny on there he lasted longer then any guest star .anyone got any info
Allan Melvin reportedly is still alive at 84, but imdb.com reports no motion picture credits since 1994. His "starring" roles were in cartoons, particularly as Magila Gorilla, but he made a good career with his recurring roles on The Dick Van Dyke Show, the Andy Griffith Show, Gomer Pyle, The Brady Bunch, and All in the Family / Archie Bunker's Place. He was well-suited to those blue-collar, 'slightly' warped-ego types.
On The Dick Van Dyke Show Tuesday morning he was part of 'Rob's' flashback to his honeymoon, as a wisecracking buddy on the army base who covered for Rob, named "Sam." It's easy to imagine that being the very same character who later was Alice's boyfriend Sam in TBB  .

I've seen his guest-star appearances on The Andy Griffith Show (usually playing different characters) and his guest-star appearance on Green Acres...According to imdB, he has been doing commercial voice-overs since 1996 and is still married to the same woman he married in 1944.
On a personal note, my father claims he saw him (Allan Melvin) walking in the street in New York once years ago, but he didn't ask for an autograph or anything. Darn!

He's one of the best character/supporting actors there has ever been. Sgt. Bilko, Gomer Pyle, Brady Bunch and All In The Family are probably his best known shows.

He did the voice of Bluto on the Popeye show in the early 80's.
