I know that in their early days before they had much cable coverage they aired a lot of obscure shows like Longstreet, Young Lawyers, Coronet Blue, Shane, Honey West, etc. Just wondering what was the last thing they aired that's not the usual run of the mill crap. Have they even run anything decent this century?

I am not sure when these aired, but I think it was in the late 90's and not 200's, but they aired Dusty's Trail and He & She at one point. I don't know what you count are rare, but I am counting it since it doesn't syndicate much but they had Father Knows Best for a little bit. As for one season wonders Gidget is the only one that comes to mind. They had Your Show of Shows for one day in a compilation movie a couple of years ago to. If I think of anything more unusual or not aired much I will post it.
Most of the rare shows disappeared in the spring of 2000, like China Beach, Homefront, St. Elsewhere, Ironside, Johnny Ringo, F-Troop, McHale's Navy, etc. By 2001 it mostly became sitcoms (Get Smart, I Love Lucy, Leave it to Beaver, The Munsters, Mary Tyler Moore, etc).

Yeah, I loved watching Sundays Best and the TV Land Box Set. They always showed great stuff on that afternoon block. I taped one of them when they had Richard Kline on Mary Tyler Moore and She's the Sheiff. Do you know what the other two shows that TV Land aired on that Box Set?

I think John Ritter on Mary Tyler Moore and Don Knotts on Andy Griffith--I'm not positive, though. I'll double check.
EDIT: Yes, I'm right:
3:00PM The Andy Griffith Show #111 - "Barney's Sidecar" (with Don Knotts)
3:30PM The Mary Tyler Moore Show #129 - "Ted's Wedding" (with John Ritter)
4:00PM She's the Sheriff #07 - "Call Me Madam" (with Suzanne Somers)
4:30PM The Mary Tyler Moore Show #152 - "Mary Gets a Lawyer" (with Richard Kline)

China Beach isn't rare. Its on Monday through Friday on the History channel.
In what country? Canada?
The US version of the History Channel hasn't - in at least the six years I've had it - never aired sitcoms/dramas. (Though they did produce an original game show at one point...)
The only time I've ever seen CB on cable TV in my lifetime has been on TV Land.

Actually, the US History Channel aired "China Beach" on late nights for a good while. I want to say back in 2004, but I'm not 100% sure of the timeframe. It was definitely in the 2000s.
I also remember spending the day before Thanksgiving 2003 watching a "Baa Baa Black Sheep" marathon. I reeeeeally liked that show.
As far as TVLand and rareness goes, I'd say the last time they had extremely rare shows on on a regular basis was with The Kitschen. That was made up of almost entirely rare shows from its start to its finish.
The Kitschen greatly declined, though....I think near the end it showed Batman and My Favorite Martian, not too rare. Didn't it go to cartoons or something like that? I know it carried H.R. Puffnstuff near the end.

I remember they had a show on Fridays at 5 to 6 p.m. called "_____s ultimate fan search" (the "blank" was the name of a winner of a contest they had every year, and the person would host this show once a week, that mostly showed 1 or 2 rare episode(s) of a show). Anyway, they showed "The Jack Benny show", "Shazam", "Mr. Terrific", "The New Dick Van Dyke show", "The M Squad", "F Troop", "My Favorite Martian", "Run, Buddy, Run!", "McHales Navy", "Bridget Loves Bernie", "Finder of Lost Loves".
That show was great! It's a shame they stopped showing it, I think in 2001.

Day by Day premeired on NBC in 1988 and was about a couple of suburban overachievers who dropped out and opened up a day center in their home. Elaine from Seinfeld was a cast member
Madame's place was a syndicated show in 1982, never in primetime. Corey Feldman was a cast member on this show

Let me explain the definition of RARE to you so you can understand
RARE TV Show: any tv show that is not on DVD or being carried by any local or Cable Network.
Is that Clear? Day By Day is not on DVD and probably never will be and doesn't air in syndication or on cable so that makes it RARE

Yeah, right. Let me explain RARE to you. A show that will never be on DVD and that has never aired in the VIDEOTAPING era, which started in the late
70s. Most anything that has aired since 1978 with a few exceptions is not rare and certainly a show from the late 80s is not. You must be very young.

And so because YOU never heard of it, that makes it rare? Maybe it means you don't really know much about television if you never heard of a show that's A) not that old and B) had a network run of a year and a half and C) had a decent run on national cable syndication on USA network. Sorry, but maybe we travel in different circles but among serious collectors, nothing from the last 20 years that has aired on network TV is rare.

I didn't really consider the show important or else I would have taped it when it aired, as I did several other shows from around that timeframe (Darkroom, Strike Force, Open All Night, etc.). If it was that important to you, why didn't you tape it? BTW, didn't have to be Beta as we were using VHS by 1978. That's what format my Another Day, Sugar Time, Rollergirls, Waverly Wonders, Apple Pie and other shows were taped on.

You know what's REALLY rare?
An episode from any soap opera pre-1976, with the exclusions of Ryan's Hope, Dark Shadows, The Young and the Restless, Days of our Lives, and The Doctors.
Why are they rare? Because the dumbass executives at the networks ERASED those tapes and recorded over them, so, for the most part, most soap opera episodes 1946-1976 are lost forever, never to be seen ever, ever, ever again.
And it sucks eggs.

I agree with you Solomon 100 percent. I hate "Leave It To Beaver" and I also hate "The Brady Bunch" which is another sitcom you hate as well. "Leave It To Beaver" and "The Brady Bunch" are the two worst family sitcoms in all of television. It is time for TVLand to get rid of these two shows since TVLand has run them to the ground. "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Full House" are the two best family sitcoms in all of television and I wish TVLand would air a late night marathon of "Diff'rent Strokes" from 12midnight to 2am and "Full House" from 2am to 4am instead of a late night marathon of "Leave It To Beaver".

I agree. A number of game shows back then suffered the same fate. Networks were downright lousy at archiving shows. Either the tapes would be erased and reused or destroyed. It is the exact reason why a big number of episodes of these and other game shows are gone: The Match Game (1962-69), Wheel of Fortune (1975-81 - Chuck Woolery era), The Big Showdown (only two episodes existing), Password (CBS 1961-66 b/w daytime, 1971-75), Jeopardy! Not to be condescending, but if you are so into sitcoms, how did you miss it on TBS? I thought it ran there forever, along with Andy Griffith and Beverly Hillbillies. So, if you never saw this then what about less frequently aired shows like December Bride, Our Miss Brooks, Ann Sothern Show, Real McCoys, etc.?

Gomer Pyle I believe was moved to the 4:30 to 5 am timeslot in the early 80's. I didn't even get a chance to watch it much after it got moved. And he was under 10. Not many children get up at that hour on weekdays to watch tv.

If you can tell me what year it was on TBS i probably would be able to give you an answer as to why I didn't watch it. For example, I didn't see the One Year Wonder Marathon on TV LAND in 1998 because the cable company I was with at the time didn't carry TV LAND

Well that explains it-lol I was too young and didn't have cable in the early 80's

Gomer Pyle was on at a good hour originally but I believe that was the late 70's-maybe really early 80's. I remember watching it when I came home from school. I know eventually it moved to the real early morning hour. I don't remember how long it was there though.
