View Full Version : Does smoking really make you lose weight??

I heard it does.....and it increases your metabolism.

I'm not thinking about doing it, I was just curious about it. If smoking didn't damage your body, I'd do it.

who cares if it does? it gives you lung cancer and all sorts of other stuff on top of it. it shouldn't matter if it does or not.

I heard a lot of teens are staring to smoke now to lose weight......I'm too lazy to exercise (and I hate excercising) and it's too hard to eat healthy.

After you eat you can also stick a toothbrush down your throat and vomit, then you'll lose weight. However, I wouldn't advise it. If you want to change things you have to try there's no easy solution.

nobody likes excerising or eating on a diet but hell, if your serious about it then you make sacrifices. But you don't need to lose any. You just need to get some self-esteem. Excerise releases endorphins which make you feel happy. So maybe some light excerise would help. Why don't you try yoga or pilates?

Try to make exercise fun. Go swimming, play tennis, go for a walk. And you don't necessarily have to eat healthy maybe just limit what you eat. And if you don't try any of that then I guess it's hopeless and you might as well just keep trying at making yourself throw up.

Please quit. Most people that practice bulimia and anorexia at 14-15 are lying in a tombstone by 20. Is it that good to stay skinny? You need urgent counseling. This is becoming OBSESSIVE for you.

Oh Nikki. I'm glad to hear you've stopped being bulimic, but taking up smoking to loose weight is not the answer. As an overweight teen, I understand where you're coming from. You can't fit into the nice fashions that the pretty girls are in. And most of all, your friends and parents make fun of you because you're not the perfect size. Believe me I know. I have been overweight since I was younger. Now, I eat pretty good but my meds cause weight gain, so I just do what I can. I just try and convince my family and my friends that I am who I am. You should never try to change yourself to impress others, do it for you! :)

No, I heard it on a smoking website. It was a saying how smoking does increase your metabolism, but in a dangerous way.
if it's a web site run by a smoking company, don't listen to anything they say. they try to flaunt the "benefits" of smoking to distract you from the fact that it's suicide. all they want is to get people addicted to their **** so they can make more money.

anyway i got a bit worried when i saw this thread, so i'm glad you don't want to smoke, and i'm glad you don't try bulimia anymore. i know you have problems with self-esteem and i don't want you to choose destructive methods to deal with them. i think you should read some kind of self-help reference books regarding self-esteem and whatever else you can relate to, it could help get you on the right path.

I'm not thinking about doing it, I was just curious about it. If smoking didn't damage your body, I'd do it.

It doesn't really do anything to metabolism but nicotine does act as a mild stimulant by increasing norepinephrine levels in the brain, which has an anorectic affect, that is, until it kills you.

Honestly, cigarrettes aside, I'd stay away from anything designed 'for weightloss'. THey either don't work or work at a high price, which is why amphetamines and their ilk are no longer actively used for obesity.

This is something that is very close to my heart.

In March of 1997 my son was born. One month later my dad was diagnosed with lung cancer. By the time they diagnosed it it had spread from his lungs to his heart, his pancreas and his brain. Watching my dad suffer thru the effects of the chemo and the radiation was the single hardest thing I have ever had to do. He wasted away to nothing and one morning ran out into the street completely naked. Trying to get him back into the house was nearly impossible. Finally in June of '97 he was put into hospice. We had family and friends coming to visit constantly. He passed away in the middle of the night. My dad was my best friend. He raised me from the time I was 8. There isn't a day that goes by that I don't think about him. Especially when I look at my son. He looks and acts so much like my dad it is scary.

I ask myself every day what my life would be like if my dad hadn't smoked. I know that he would have made a wonderful grandfather. He loved kids so much. I have video of him with my son and cry everytime I watch it. He started smoking when he was 14. He was only 53 when he died. Much to young. :(

I would rather weigh 600 pounds than put my family thru that type of hell. Watching my dad go from being active and healthy, to inactive and in a coma at a hospice center had the most profound effect on me. It isn't only the person that smokes that suffers when they die from the effects of smoking. It is everyone around them. Their family and friends. Those that mean the world to them.

Please Nikki, don't start smoking. That isn't the answer. Go take a walk. Heck, even going to the mall and window shopping is a great way to get exercise. Cutting back on your size portions is another way. I don't claim to be an expert, just someone that lost one of the most important people in her life way too soon. If I can help one other person, then I think it is worth it.

ohh boy, i can relate. my mom started smoking at 16 and she was diagnosed with cancer when i was ten, even though the doctor didn't think it had to do with her smoking, but it might have. however she and my dad never told me and my brother about it until i was 13; apparently the cancer kept going away before then and they didn't want us kids to be worried, so it wasn't until it got bad that we knew about it. but anyway it was the summer of 2002 that i found out and she started having long stays in the hospital, and in september she died. she'd gone through chemo as well, and it just wrecked her. to this day i can't go in a hospital without being reminded of visiting her there all the time and being painfully worried 24 hours a day. i loved her SO much, as long as i can remember i always looked up to her; when i was younger i used to cry myself to sleep at the thought that she would die someday, even though i figured it would be when i'm middle-aged; even as a 12/13 year old i thought she was a really cool mom and didn't find it humiliating to have her around my friends or anything. it tore me to pieces to lose her so early. even now it's still a bit hard to believe that i haven't had a mom through my teenage years...i'm incomplete.

seriously why ever the hell so many people give themselves cancer like that and risk doing such a thing to their family is beyond me.

Smoking, for some people, acts like an appetite suppressant.

As a former smoker, I really don't know if it's true. Although I did put on a few pounds when I quit, but excercise stopped me from gaining serious weight.

Barwars,
It's great that you take time from your busy day to insult niki. those are 40 seconds that you will never get back. If you don't have something nice to say, don't post it. It's just common sense.

I started smoking when I was around your age (15) and I wished that I never picked up the horrid habit. I have tried quitting (many of times) but have not been successful; it is a terrible habit to fall into.
Oh. My grandmother and grandfather started when they were just children (9 & 11). (you have to remember, back then smoking wasn't considered harmful) she's just recently quit. She's 63. Alot of damage has been done to her lungs. It was amazing, she just woke up one morning and didn't want a cig.

My grandfather still smokes very heavily. He has numerous diseases that I can't even begin to name. It hurts me so bad to see him smoke so much. I've even bought him the patches and gum, but he's never used them.

Please try again to quit. I know I don't know you that well, but like you said it's a bad habit and very harmful. We want you posting for many years to come :)

I grew up with both my Parents smoking. My Dad quit over 20 years ago but my Mom smoked until the day she died. She had a lot of things wrong with her but the one thing that eventually got to her was her breathing. She refused to go to a doctor so we don't know for sure what killed her but I think smoking had a lot to do with it. During the last year she could barely walk and was practically an invilid too . I often wondered if she had cancer.

Smoking instead of snacking will help. But it still all comes down to limiting calories. If you smoke all that is is a substitute for food. I know a lot of smokers who are grossly overweight. Don't start smoking. It's a nasty addictive habit. You not only can harm your health but everyone around you. I smoked for 20 years and I suppose it did help me to skip dessert but when I finally quit it was an awful withdrawl. I would never ever go through that again!

Smoking does not cause you to lose weight. That is totally false! Limit your calories and that WILL work! Willpower!

Smoking will kill you eventually. If you want to lose weight, go to Jenny Craig or something.

I'm too lazy to read thru all the posts... so if this has already been said -- sorry! :o

Smoking increases your metabolism, so I guess it would help you to lose weight... but there are far better (and healthier) ways to lose a couple of pounds. ;)

Nikki, if you want to loose weight..then become more active, like walking or swimming; exercising makes you look and feel better!; but being 120 pounds, sweety, that is nothing, and stop comparing your weight to your sisters, who are both still children; you are a very beautiful young lady and I wish you all the happiness in the world!!!:) because you definitely deserve it!

Aw, thanks! :)

Actually smoking DOES help people lose weight. It increases your metabolism. Go knock yourself out.

When was the last time she ever listened to someone's advice? Seriously we've been through this **** a million times before.

I heard a lot of teens are staring to smoke now to lose weight......I'm too lazy to exercise (and I hate excercising) and it's too hard to eat healthy.

Than just starve yourself. If your anorexic you lose weight fast. And you don't need to smoke! :D

I know, but sometimes it's better to humor them, LOL.

Niki, normally I would say "Do whatever feels right to you," but in this situation, I'm making a plea to you to listen to those who care about you: DO NOT START SMOKING!! Starting that habit for any reason is stupid. Even if you do it once just to experiment, you can still end up being addicted and many people will tell you that it's extremely difficult to quit. People here have already mentioned the numerous health problems it causes such as lung cancer, emphysema, etc, not to mention that it makes you smell really bad and ****s up your teeth! Also, at your age, it's ILLEGAL to smoke anyway. I don't how other people get away with it, but seriously, it is.

My suggestion to you is to start exercising. You mentioned that you are too lazy to do that, but you can start out small. For example, when you go somewhere (Like the mall), take the stairs instead of the elevator or the escalator. You can make it fun too. Why won't you and a couple of friends sign up for a fitness club or an exercise class together and go once or twice a week? Maybe you can do something at school. Is PE a required class for you? That's already exercising. I took a dance class my freshman year. I don't know if I lost weight from it, but it made me feel better about myself and my body. Talk to your counselor and ask if your school offers these types of classes, then ask if there's anyway you can sign up for them for the upcoming school year.

Be wise in making good decisions. Take good care of yourself! I hope things all work out well! :)

I think he does have a point though. You post numerous threads about your problems then when people give advice it's never good enough. What if there was just one thread for you where we could try help you out and give advice instead?
how many threads has she made about smoking? she asked a mere question about it out of curiosity and clarified that she's not considering it. this isn't any "i'm fat and hate myself" thread. it was a question.

I say smoke, hopefully it'll help you loose the weight.

Then you'll be so frail that you'll be unable to come and make these stupid threads.

Tim, come on. That wasn't nice.

I'd agree that maybe you could try to do some physical activity, Nikki. Even if you're lazy, you could start off with something. Do you like tennis? Maybe you could play that once or twice a week? And just eat healthily (but sensible amounts, not too little, not too much.)
