The founder of Taco Bell, Glen Bell, started with a hot dog stand in San Bernardino, California in 1946. After experimenting with alternative food items, he opened three Taco-Tia stands between 1954 and 1955, which he later sold to his partners. He then opened the first Taco Bell in Downey, California on March 21, 1962.
The first Taco Bell franchise was sold in 1964 and the company went public in 1969. In 1978, Bell sold the chain to PepsiCo. The chain was spun off along with Pepsi's other fast food restaurant holdings as Tricon Global Restaurants in October 1997. Tricon became Yum! Brands, Inc. in May 2002.

As stated above, the franchise has been around a while, but became known in different regions of the country at different times.

It didn't know that either. I guess it was because Taco Bell was more of a success on the west coast before invading the east coast.

When I was a kid there were no Taco Bells, in fact no Big Mac's. For fast food you went to White Castle for the "belly burgers". Ten cents a sqaure burger with the onion and pickle, ten cents for fries and 15 cents for a shake. For a buck you bought 5, had some fries, a drink, and got change.
In N.Y.C. there was franchise called Nedick's. They put a grilled frank on a toasted bun and made the best orange drink you ever tasted. They were known for their orange drinks. Frank and drink 20 cents.
Of course I had Nathan's at Coney Island about 20 minutes from my house.

I loved the decor Taco Bell's had back in the 80's. They looked so awesomely cheesy.

I remember how it had a mission style look and decor to it. And it had that big bell on top of the building. I don't know abt all the Taco Bells, but the three we had in our city had this huge fire pit in the front where at night a fire would be roaring.

I loved the 80s look too - especially with the real bell at the top of the building.

to hell with Taco Bell, it was always about Taco Tico for me.
Taco Tico is a regional thing that peaked in the 80's and died out during the 90's, but is beginning to renaissance itself because the kids who lived on that food are now entrepreneurs themselves. Where I love, a Taco Tico opened about four months ago, the first time we'd had a Taco Tico in the area since 1996 or so, and the sucker is always packed and you better pray you can get a table when you walk in there. I can tolerate Taco Bell, but Taco Tico was so much better and it's nice to see that enough people out there felt the same way that the company has been given a new life in a lot of areas that have been Tico-less since the mid-90's.

Yeah, we still have a few of them spread throughout the South Bay... San Pedro, Wilmington, and two in Torrance. They still have the 80's design outdoors, but they're updated inside. :\

They tore down the 1980s style Taco Bell we had in my town for as long as I can remember - only to rebuild it in the new modern crappy decor (inside and out). Booooooooo!

Was that the one with Patrick Duffy? The commercial he did for them aired around that time.

They played it when Patrick was a guest on the Arsenio Hall show and I thought he said it was from 1978 but I'm not certain.

WOW!! I never knew Taco Bell was around for so long!!! I was watching something a couple months ago on one of the business channels and it was talking about the origins of McDonalds...how how those two restaurants have evolved!!!
I actually liked the late 90's commercials with the "Yo quiero Taco Bell" chihuahua. I actually have a stuffed one that says "¡Viva Gorditas!" What ever happened to that dog anyway? I heard the dog was really a girl...

I liked when the Taco Bell dog was in the Geico commercial a few years ago.
