Can anyone remember a sitcom in the 80's about a talking gorilla voiced I think by James Earl Jones?

I'm sure I'm not making it up but everybody here is taking the piss out of me.

i think you might be thinking of mr. smith wich aired on nbc in 1983 and the voice you heard was not james earl jones but show co createor ed wienberger
