View Full Version : TV Land where it is and where it's heading
What do you think of TV Land in its current state? What do you think the next moves will be?
I have mixed feelings. The focus is becoming more balanced again (60s/70s mostly)...unlike the 2005-early 2006. With Star Trek coming, it will be the first 1960s show since June, 2004. Which excites me, at least they're still paying the 1960s some attention. And with Green Acres renewed, that also gives a little more hope, I like GA. I also like the idea of TM/LITB getting mini-marathons and 1950s and 1960s classics in the evening/early morning hours. Plus Night Court going on hiatus, one less 80s show. I kinda want to say they'll start adding more 60s, but another part of me says no. I think the next move will be Beaver re-joining the primetime lineup, however I could be wrong, but there are good chances I think. It's also nice to see the 1980s shows mostly limited to daytime, don't get me wrong, I like some 1980s shows....but I don't think TV Land is the place for them.
I predict we'll see the addition of at least one 1960s show next year, probably a sitcom. I'm not getting excited about anything right now, though, because who knows with TV Land anymore?? I just keep suggesting at their boards and keeping my fingers crossed.
What do you think?

What is to be excited about is TV Land Broadband. That looks very good and promising and will have some non-TVL shows airing uncut. I don't think many will be happy with new shows on on-air TV Land after Jeffersons.
I know you can't say anything probably, but anymore 60s besides ST coming??

Uh oh, LOL. That doesn't sound very good ... (well Broadband does, but not the last statement ... lol).
Uh oh, LOL. That doesn't sound very good ... (well Broadband does, but not the last statement ... lol).Same here, LOL. The issue I have, is online video is usually grainy and doesn't have good sound quality. Maybe I'm wrong.
If they would add Get Smart, that might be a step in the right direction.
TVLand sucks, IMO.
Quite frankly, they're afraid to try anything new, and in a way, I can't blame them. Last year, when they aired the Warner Brothers 50th Anniversary marathon, I was in heaven. Complete heaven. These were all shows that, for the most part, hadn't been on a major cable network for years and years and years. But the ratings were not good, and TVLand got the idea that people want to see the same things over and over again, which is probably true.
I just get frustrated because as much as I love the shows that have been in reruns for years, I just want TVLand and other channels to realize that classic TV is more than Lucy and Archie and Gilligan and the others. There's another world of sitcoms and dramas and entire genres that are always neglected. Even shows that were big in reruns 10 years ago are nowhere to be found today. Where is That Girl? Emergency?
There are numerous shows with over 100 episodes that rarely see the light of day. Where's Family? Where's Eight is Enough? Where is Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman?
It makes no sense.
Should we expect any news of any new shows coming next year anytime soon? I know it probably isn't time yet, but just thought I'd throw it out there.

Family would be a great show for TVLand watchers to see. It was in my opinion Aaron Spelling's best piece of work. It showed a family with real life issues and not this syrupy storylines we see in other family shows. Meredith Baxter Birney was great on that show and her storylines definitely moved the show. Her character, Nancy Lawrence Maitland, was an underrated character on that show. The cast was outstanding and the writing was inpeccible.
It would great for TVLand to have Here's Lucy, Please Don't Eat the Daisies, Donna Reed Show, Room 222, one season shows such as Bridget Loves Bernie and All Is Forgiven, and The New Dick Van Dyke Show.

I think that right now tvland is running their shows into the ground. I think if another channel starts showing older shows that haven't been seen in a while they will start stealing viewers away. I mean the way things are going why should I watch tvland when I have most of the shows on dvd now? And I don't have to watch commercials. It used to be time for bathroom breaks between commercials-now I can take a shower and still have time to style my hair. There are just way too many commercials and I can't think of one right now that has a product I would buy. And what happened to the cute commercials? Like Mr. Whipple or Tony the Tiger? I think now that the I network has gained some older shows from Warner Brothers they might just grab some viewers. I know that I will be watching next month. I hope they show Alice and Perfect Strangers. I haven't seen them in a while.

I tell you one show I do miss seeing on TVland in the mornings;'The Waltons'. I wish that TVland would put it on back in syndication. All those other shows on TVland; 'Welcome Back Koter', 'What's Happening', etc. I never watch them.Occasionally I'll watch 'Little House on The Preaire' .
Who else agrees they need more 1960s shows? I think TV Land should be mostly 50s-70s with an emphasis on 60s, maybe an 80s show or two late night. Nick@Nite should do late 70s-early 90s. According to The Link, a few 1960s shows are currently under serious/heavy consideration, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed.

What they need are more shows that haven't aired a thousand times, no matter what decade. Look, I understand that all of the common **** gets the ratings. But that doesn't mean that they can't set aside some part of their schedule for lesser seen shows. But then again, even when they used to run more obscure shows they wouldn't even commit to a full run. They might buy a one season show and take 4 episodes or like they did with The Rookies a few summers ago, buy 25 episodes of a 4 season show. Hey, I'm sure they are successful with what they do but I haven't even looked at them in years and I see no reason to start. Bring back HA which was a great network owned by the same people.

The Rookies was part of the huge Screen Gems library deal. They had limited airings of shows and had to convert episodes from tape to digital to air them. Same went true for the Warner Bros. deal, that is why we didn't see all of Perfect Strangers, Head of the Class, etc.
And yes, TV Land is getting better and better in the ratings. They will continue to do what they are doing.
Pav, any information on The Munsters yet? Do you think they will renew?

I don't agree. In my opinion, the 60's were one of the weakest decades for shows.
Oh wow, I'll be in suspense - LOL. I'm guessing they'll renew.

I.E., sucking. ALTV is a thousand times better network. Better programs by far and they don't edit out 6 minutes an hour from shows. Too bad they don't have better cable coverage but that has more to do with the ownership than the quality of the channel.

Right, fine if your idea of fine is to show the same shows a thousand times over. Fine, if you want to see shows that are cut by anywhere from 4 to 8 minutes that you can buy on DVD complete and unedited. Fine if your idea of classic television is about 50 shows of the thousands that have aired.

I deffenly agree!I too would love to see more 60's(and 50's)shows;shows like Donna Reed,Father Knows Best,Dennis The Mence,Danny Thomas(since I didn't see some of these shows when they frist came on no thanks to my local cable company:mad: )Throw in Odd Couple, some Sid&Marty Kroff shows and some game shows that had comedy in it(Like Match Game,Hollywood Squares{original versions}),then we'll be talking!I'm too is tried of Bonanza(do they ever show anything besides the early years?),and Gunsmoke(shows that deffenly been run into the ground). While 70's and 80's shows are fine,I too want more of a balance schedule.
Well They have aired Leave it to Beaver, Andy Griffith, Munsters, Addams Family, Green Acres, Dick Van Dyke, I love Lucy, Gunsmoke, Bonanza, What more do you want???? Just say you rather have a Cable Network that only shows 50's and 60's TV shows.

I'd like to see shows such as The Real McCoys, The Courtship of Eddie's Father [though it's unlikely, since I has it as part of the WB library deal] and, though I've never been a western fan, maybe they can add The Virginian to the lineup and run it on weekends, or would it violate their all Bonanza/Gunsmoke all the time policy?

How about not the SOS? Let's see, if you are talking 60s, what about Wendy and Me, Farmer's Daughter, Occasional Wife, Love on a Rooftop, Please Don't Eat the Daisies, Bill Dana Show, Good Guys, Governor and JJ, Second Hundred Years? Gee, bet you never even heard of those? Well, guess what, they're pretty good but they haven't been repeated ten thousand times over. I could name tons more from each decade that are good but TV Land wouldn't touch.

Define short-lived? Farmer's Daughter ran 3 years, Daisies 2, some of the others 1 1/2. Since even when they buy a short-run show they never purchase all of the episodes anyway what difference would it make?

Back in those days a series that ran for 2 or 3 seasons had a lot more episodes so that's why a lot of were syndicated so much. GI had almost 100 episodes and it ran 3 years.

I know, it is amazing how times change. The Munsters had 70 episodes in 2 seasons. It takes a show almost 4 years to reach that now. Beavers first season had 39 in 1957. GI's had 36 in 1964, The Odd Couple had 24 in 1970. 20-24 seems to be the average now.

Well the 1970's is when TV took off and they should show more from that era
