View Full Version : At what age did you start getting gray hair??

I was out hiking a few weeks ago with my mom and her b/f, and they brought it to my attention that I had some gray hairs growing on my head. :( At first, I was pretty much devastated by this news, considering the fact that I'm only 24 years old (25 in August), but then as I started thinking about it, I remembered the Bible verse about how gray hair on a person's head is a sign of wisdom, and so that made me feel better about it. :D Anyway, at what age did you all first notice you had gray hairs, and what was your reaction to it??

Well, I started going bald a while back, but the gray hairs I started noticing around 53 or 54 (I'm 56 currently). My beard is going gray at a fairly rapid rate, but my regular hair, or what's left of it, is still pretty much black, with a few gray strands here and there. As far as my reaction to it, it really doesn't bother me. I'm just gonna go with it. None of this Grecian formula stuff for me. I'm healthy for my age and I take care of myself; whatever happens through the aging process I will accept gracefully.

That's a good way to look at it. It's too bad everybody doesn't look at vanity issues that way. :) It's kind of strange how some people start balding, and getting gray hairs at really young ages, while others don't seem to get them until their 50's, and 60's. Biology sure is a weird thing.

I'm 31 going on 32. I noticed in my late 20s that I had a few gray strands in my beard and hair. I keep my hair bald, but I let my hair grow, and I noticed a few gray hairs.
Hey Little Mel, I don't know how true it is, but my mother use to say that when you get premature gray hair, that means good luck. LOL I think her mother use to tell her that.

That would be cool!! Iv'e been having alot of bad luck recently, but I definitely have noticed things starting to turn around over the last few weeks or so, so I think your mom might just be onto something. :)

I am 59 and have never had gray hair. Neither did my dad, and he was 71 when
he passed away (in 1983). So I guess it must be genetic.

I started at 35. I noticed a few gray strands one day when I had finished drying my hair.

I started going gray at age 16. It never really bothered me all that much. My mom had premature gray's as well at that age, so I was sort of prepared for it. lol

I was about 27 when it became noticeable. I assume that I am probably fully gray by now although I will never know for sure as long as they keep making Loreal Excellence. It covers those nasty gray hairs beautifully!:D

Well, I am almost 21 and neither me or my sibs have any gray hairs...my mom started finding gray hairs some 15 years ago, when she was in her mid-30s. My dad is in his early 50s and he has thin hair now, but no gray hairs on his head, altho his beard is half-gray now  I hope I'm that lucky in the department. The head hair, I mean. Not the beard.
I have a grandma who is in her mid-70s now and not once, in my almost 21 years, have I EVER seen her with white hair. Ever. She has her hair professionally colored, and it looks great!! Of course, she looks AMAZING for her age. Some days, I still have a hard time believing that she is well into her 70s now.

Early 20s. I've got a lot, but you can't see them because they're all blonde right now. :D

No gray hair yet, but I actually think gray hair is cool so it wouldn't upset me if I had it. I know, that's odd, but I've always thought that.

I haven't got any grey hairs yet.
John McEnroe is only 47, but his hair is almost completely grey. I think he looks nice, though.

I noticed some white (not gray) hair around the age of 30, maybe late 20s- I don't remember exactly.
Now I've got quite a bit at the temples mixed in with the black hair.
I wasn't surprised because one of my uncles' hair was white by the age of 35 and I'd rather have white hair than no hair!

I think it was early 20s for me. I can't remember. I have to pull it out as soon as I see one. *cringes* pissed:
As for the youngest age, a co-worker friend of mine told me her youngest daughter stressed out soooooooo much during her junior high years that she got gray hairs at the age of 12/13!

I found my first gray hairs at the tender age of 12! Yep, you read it right, 12! My grandma got gray hairs when she was young, and my mom younger than her, and I got it younger than my mom. It's very weird. My daughter will prob be born with grays  Hair dye is my new best friend.

Hair dye is my new best friend.
That's true. Hair dye can be used if someone really doesn't like gray hairs.
I noticed the gray hairs about ten years ago, in my mid twenties. Having a stressful life also makes the gray hairs pop out, and it got to a point when I actually dyed my hair to cover up the gray. Thankfully, I work in a less stressful job now. But some of the gray is still there.

I think that was why all of a sudden I had a ton...stress that started at 19.
As long as it's there, I don't really care WHAT color it is!

I feel the same way. I'm only 17, but I wouldn't mind having some eventually. I really like the Anderson Cooper look.
I'm 27 and I don't have any yet. Hopefully I'll take after my mom, she's 55 and she hardly has any.

I thought I was unusual having gray hair at 17. It is the stress. Now at 37, it's only a little more gray. I think it looks good - but strange since my face looks 20(lots of fruit and vegies).

I'm almost 34 and I started noticing them about a year and a half ago. I didn't think much about it. I can always cover them up if I want.
The gray hair popped up right after the birth of my son. I was 34.

Same here. I've started also in my early teen years. My dad had premature grays too I think.

I was 25 or 26 when I started getting gray hair, but it doesn't matter because I lighten/color my hair anyway. If anyone has gray hair and it bothers them, there's always hair color!

none yet, my grandparents didn't have grew hair until they were in their 60s. and the men on my mom's side of the family all have had a full head of hair, so I know I'm not going to go bald either. :)

Around 28. I never really tried to yank them out or anything, nor have I counted them. I've never lost any of my hair either, and probably never will. I've heard people tell me that some guys would kill to have as much hair on their heads as I've got.
My mother dyed her hair before I was born, so I can't really be 100% sure when she turned gray. My father however started turning gray in his late-40s through his 50's and then just stopped.

I got mine at about 16-18, and started to pull them out, but realized that's nowheresville. I was already dying my hair then, anyhow. I haven't been able to dye my hair as I'd like to, because I rent a room, and time in the bathroom amongst 5 people is a problem, so it's gotten shabby-looking. I have a young face, so when my hair is dyed, I can get away with knocking 20 years off my age.
Having gray hairs in --other areas, ahem --is annoying, and I'd rather shave it. My stupid boyfriend wouldn't let me, though, but I don't live with that twit anymore anyhow.
