Does anybody know if DVDs can record like video tapes. If they can't that's not fair.

If they had those, I would be addicted to them too! We have a 5 changer thing that's attached to our vcr and tv...I would take all the tapes I've ever made (and ones that I bought) and transfer them on to dvds. that would be so awesome

Apple's new machine has DVD-R in it, but I dont know how outrageous the price is. Haven't yet seen a recorder thats a component like a player is tho.

Yes, there are going to be DVD players which can record movies etc as well as play them and they are going to be on the market very soon (they are expcted to show up in Britain by the end of the year). It's a little complicated though because ther are three different types of recordable DVD players and they are all incompatable with one another. I guess it'll be whichever type makes it onto scene at the most afforable price first that will dominate the market.
The three types of recordable DVD are DVD-RW, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM.
DVD-RW (the RW stands for Read/Write) is the contender backed by the DVD Forum which is the official body established by a whole bunch of DVD maufacturer's. Obviously, having these guys on it's side means that DVD-RW is gonna have the best head-start in the format war. DVD-RW machines are actually in stores now but they are pretty hard to find and also pretty expensive. DVD-RW discs can hold up to 4.7Gb of data (more than enough for a whole movie) and these discs are also backwards compatible with already existing DVD players.
DVD+RW is pretty much the same as DVD-RW except that DVD+RW allows for greater flexibility. DVD+RW discs can be re-written up to 100,000 times and it is expected that this format will be the cheapest of the three when it eventually hits the stores.
DVD-RAM format differs technically from the other two. It also uses three different types of disc - type 1 is double sided (boo-hiss!) and has a capacity of 9.4Gb. The second type hold 4.7Gb and the third also holds 4.7Gb but is compatible with existing DVD video players. Blank DVD-RAM discs are expected to be slightly higher priced than their DVD-RW and DVD+RW counterparts.
Like I said, each of the the three formats are incompatible with one another so buying one of these formats right away is going to be a bit of a gamble. You might opt for a DVD+RW machine only to find that DVD-RW becomes the most popular and you are then left with an obsolete machine. I am eager to get my hands on a rcordable DVD player but I think that I'll hold back from getting one untill one of the three formats has fully established itself as the most dominant on the market and then buy that one. Also, waiting for a while means that prices will come down and I'll save myself some cash too. http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/smile.gif
Hope this information has been of help to you.

We have a dvd player on our computer, but I don't ever use it. We always just use our one that's connected to the tv...I don't really like watching movies on the computer...
