Aaron Spelling (Born April 22, 1923 in Dallas, Texas, died June 23, 2006 in Los Angeles, California.) was an American film and television producer.

He had worked in some capacity on almost 200 productions including Starsky and Hutch, Family, Hotel, Daniel Boone, The Rookies, Charlie's Angels, The Love Boat, Vega$, Hart to Hart, Dynasty, The Colbys, T.J. Hooker, Twin Peaks, Nightingales, Beverly Hills 90210, Melrose Place, 7th Heaven, and Charmed. He also produced the NBC TV series Titans with Yasmine Bleeth in 2000 and Summerland in 2004. Certain sources list him as the world's most prolific or successful television producer.

Aaron attended Forest Avenue High School. After serving with the USAAF, he graduated from Southern Methodist University in 1945. He went to New York and found some work as an actor. He married actress Carolyn Jones, in 1953, and they moved to California. He had his break as a writer, selling his first script to Jane Wyman Theater in 1954. He went on to write for Dick Powell, Playhouse 90, and Last Man, amongst others. He joined Powell's Four Star Productions. After the death of Powell he formed Thomas-Spelling Productions with Danny Thomas. Their first hit was The Mod Squad. In 1972, he created Aaron Spelling Productions and another co-production company with Leonard Goldberg. His company went public in 1986 as Spelling Entertainment.

He divorced Jones in 1965 and in 1968 he married Carol Jean Marer (aka Candy Spelling). He was father of the actors Victoria Davey Spelling (Tori Spelling) and Randall Gene Spelling (Randy Spelling). He lived in Los Angeles; his home is the largest single-family dwelling in California.

Spelling also produced the NBC daytime soap opera Sunset Beach from 1997 to 1999.

Despite his many accomplishments in life, Spelling continued to emphasize that his favorite project of all time was 7th Heaven. The success of this "little drama that could", and the fact that it had been the WB's most-watched series since 1998, was beyond belief to him.

In January 28, 2006, he was sued by his former nurse who seeks unspecified damages for ten claims, including sexual harassment and discrimination, retaliation, sexual battery (for making "contact with the plaintiff's intimate parts"), assault, wrongful termination, and intentional infliction of emotional distress.

On June 18, 2006, he suffered a stroke at his home in California and died June 23, 2006 in Los Angeles at age 83.

Words do not describe how sad I am right now. This man...he made SO many TV shows that I just plain love. I mean, just the last five years of my life have been full of me loving his shows.

Off the top of my head, I can think of:

The Rookies (Saturday afternoons on TVLand a few years ago...now THAT was the ****!)
Starsky and Hutch (how could you not like it?)
Charlie's Angels (my favorite crime/mystery/police/whatever show of ALL. TIME.)
The Love Boat (the perfect outlet for me to live out my 70s fantasies)
Fantasy Island (same as the Boat)
Hart to Hart (such a wonderful, romantic, suspenseful show)
Dynasty (nobody did guilty pleasures better than Aaron. No. Body.)
Finder of Lost Loves (one of his great short-lived shows)
Melrose Place (he basically reinvented himself with a brand new generation and served up just as much greatness)
7th Heaven (I was JUST watching a rerun on ABC Family today)
Summerland (deserved a better chance than what the WB gave it)

And he made what is, in my opinion, the BEST mini-series EVER, "Hollywood Wives." I watched the whole thing from start to finish (all 6 hours) one Saturday on WE and will watch it again every single time it comes on. It was spectacular.

And that's not counting the many, many shows of his that I'd die to see but never have. Family, Vega$, 90210 (I saw it, but never really watched), The Colbys, all of his short-lived 90s soaps. Sunset Beach, for crying out loud!

The man is a legend. A damn legend and he deserves every gallon of respect that he gets. He forever changed my TV viewing habits (for the better) and continuously produced shows that NEVER failed to entertain me. His shows were just...pure enjoyment. He didn't try to change the world, he didn't try to make people realize anything. He wanted people to come home after a long, hard day at work or school and sit down and watch some good, fun, carefree shows. Watching any of his shows is always a sure-fire way to make me smile.

Rest in peace, genius. Rest in peace.

I think this man will receive even higher legendary status now that he is dead. He basically shaped televison as we know it, today. It's sad he's gone, but he lived a long life and lived it well. Poor Tori and her brother must be really sad. :( God bless.

He had an amazing career. I can't think of one other producer who has had such an effect on TV. An article stated that you would need to add the entire Dick Wolf and Jerry Bruckheimer production companies together to even come close to Spelling. At one point he was responsible for 1/3 of ABC programming - that is incredible. He will be missed.

That was very sad about Aaron Spelling. "Charmed" is still my favorite show with Alyssa Milano and Holly Marie Combs. I remember since I was a kid, I've seen "Charlie's Angels", "The Love Boat", "Hart to Hart" and many others. By the time I get to my later years, "Summerland" was still my favorite show with "Full House" star Lori Loughlin and Jesse McCartney. Aaron Spelling did his best. That was very, very sad news to all the TV world. He created so much drama. I do missed him. The last show that Aaron did was "Charmed". That was it. RIP.:(

Since "7th Heaven" was renewed, I think that'd be considered his last show. Definitely fitting, since it was his favorite of all of his shows.

Spelling, who held the distinction of being the most prolific producer in the history of television, was honored by TV Land when the network presented him with the Pioneer Award during the 2005 TV Land Awards: A Celebration of Classic TV.

"Aaron Spelling was an enormous talent whose keen eye, sharp wit and deep understanding of why people love television made him one of the greatest sources of beloved TV shows in the history of the medium," explains Jones. "Mr. Spelling exuded charm and worked tirelessly to entertain us all. Many of us at TV Land feel so honored to have known him and our deepest condolences go out to the Spelling family, friends and fans as we all mourn the loss of this incredibly gifted man."

On-air, TV Land will re-broadcast two installments of the network's acclaimed 2004 6-part special TV Land Moguls. This Saturday, from 10 AM - Noon (ET/PT), TV Land's weekend original programming block will be dedicated to Spelling with the two installments highlighting many of his achievements. The episodes explore the biggest moguls from the 1970s and spotlight Spelling's rise to prominence in the world of entertainment. It was during that time in which he created some of the biggest hits in
television including Charlie's Angels, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island, Starsky & Hutch and several others. TV Land has already begun airing a memorial spot reminding viewers of his outstanding contributions.
