These two African-American actresses played rich upper class TV wife/mom with a husband in a high paying career. My personal preference is Janet Hubert-Whitten. She brought a lot to the role of Vivian Banks and she was still down-to-earth. She was not influence by her wealth plus she had her own career as well. She dressed well from head to toe. The episodes with Vivian sisters, when Janet was on the show, played very well. Those four women played comedy well and could had a show of their own in the same vein of The Golden Girls.
Phylicia Rashad rubbed me the wrong way as the years of the Cosby Show went. She came off too know it all and a male basher. I found the character of Clair Huxtable too controlling and perfect. I liked Clair Huxtable the first two seasons of TCS but after the third season her stuck up and holier than thou ways was coming out.

I agree with what you said about Clair Huxtable, but IMO, the charactor of Vivian Banks was never that believable either.

In what way??? I found Daphne Maxwell Reid's version of Vivian Banks from seasons 4 through 6 unbelievable. It was like she was just there. Janet Hubert-Whitten, seasons 1 through 3, version of her was believable and there were no airs about her compared to Clair Huxtable.

Thats true, I got Daphne and Janet's Vivian confused. Daphne was very good playing Vivian, very believable. I think what made Janet's not so believable was sometimes she seemed uncomfortable. And she kinda gave Vivian a rich snob vibe.

The difference with the two characters, is Claire was not as down to earth as Vivian, at least not to me.
Daphne Maxwell Reid's Vivian was watered down alot from Janet Hubert Whitten's style, so I think in the later years the Vivian character was less likable than Claire Huxtable was.

In the later years Vivian was nearly non existent. She was not hardly in the show and the episodes she was in it was one or two scenes. Two of my favorite episodes from the Daphne Maxwell Reid's seasons was the Soul Train episode and the one where the family minister made a pass at her. It was interesting in the later years that Phil was more involve with Will than Vivian.
