They didn't get divorced there but she did finally divorce Mike on the series Gloria. He ran off with another woman to live in a commune.

Exactly!! At that point in the show, I just wanted to stick a pin in her and watch her fly around the room!! Cruel - but true! She really did get annoying to me the last couple of seasons. I couldn't have blame him if he had run off to a farm to be with a sheep named Daisy!!

Did you ever see the South Park episode where they parodied Sally Struthers and her Save The Children ads where they showed her to be the size of Jabba The Hutt and while the ethiopian children were starving, she had a bunker stocked with twinkies and snack cakes. Hil-arious!!!

I still think it was in bad taste to have Mike Stivic become a loser by deserting his family like that. It devalues all that Mike Stivic was while in All In the Family, and it breaks the solemn promise Mike makes to Archie when Archie says, "Promise me one thing, that you'll take care of Gloria and Joey." Mike replies, "That's something you never have to worry about."

It proves that Archie was right all those years by calling Mike a Meathead, and it was a rotten thing for the producers of the show to do to a character. It villainized him.

Was anything ever said about the money Mike promised to pay Archie for his years of living in the house? In one recent TVL ep, the amount agreed to was $3840. But maybe with Archie's mellowing in the ABP years and being more in the money than he was in those earlier years, he didn't hold to him it... unless he was angry with him for leaving Gloria and Joey. Or, was this "commune" he went to live in one where he has to give up everything he has to 'communal property'?

It seems like whatever happened, Archie was shown to be right about the Meathead in the long run.

i think it would been cool see Mike show up on Archie Bunkers Place broke and nowhere to live and ask Archie if he can stay with him or a motle and have Archie totally go off on him for way he deserted his family

This was the topic at another board, but I agree. I think Mike should have been imprisoned for something he did as a protest. That way, he isn't made into a deadbeat and he doesn't have to be on the show either.

Gloria wasn't involved with another guy on her series. And I think it should have been explained that it was a mutual breakup not Mike LEFT Gloria for another woman.

Well, let's face it - Mike left Gloria because Rob Reiner didn't want to come back and play the character again. Had he been interested, we would have had a "Mike & Gloria" spinoff rather than just "Gloria". So he had to be written out. Mike leaving Gloria to live on a commune with an 18-year-old was completely out of character, but they did it to make Gloria more sympathetic, I suppose. Remember, by this time virtually all of the "All in the Family" creative team was long gone, and the "Archie Bunker's Place" writers were probably not all that interested in preserving the integrity of a character they never had much to do with.

The Thanksgiving episode of Archie Bunker's Place Mike and Gloria along with Joey came home for Thanksgiving. Mike lost his job taking part of a nudist protest.

Looking at AITF now I cannot stand the character Mike Stivic. First of all he have a superiority attitude in that house. Grant it Archie is not a saint towards him but when you are living under someone else's roof you should be more grateful. There were times Archie should had thrown Mike out. In many episodes he talked to Gloria as though she was stupid. Gloria was not stupid. She was smart. Gloria sacrificed going to college for herself so her husband can go to college to get a good job and take care of his family. His popping off and eats like a slob grated on my nerves.

ther was a Christmas episode of "Gloria" where Mike sent Joey a present.

That always really bugged me that they had Mike do that...poor Gloria had to put up with so many years of fighting and unhappiness at her home, when she could have been dating other guys. I really think they should have had Mike die or something if they wanted to cast Sally Struthers in a new sitcom by herself playing Gloria...the way they did it made the Mike character seem like a total jerk. Or, maybe they could have had them divorced, but because things hadn't been working out between them, not because Mike left Gloria for someone else.

I know on one ep, Joey was getting on a plane to go visit his dad,

BUT i hated the divorce angle, it was bad bad bad!

they took the characters and RUINED THEM

when last we saw gloria she was still gloria---- suddenly mike leaves and she is a totally different person????

more mature and serious???

and Mike, who was far from perfect---- loved 2 things more than anything--- joey and gloria---- he would NEVER have deserted them like that

i hated how the did it, it was awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

No they Never Got Back Together There Was like 9-10 episode left of the series.
and Lionel, jenny were last seen in that episode. and jessica was in one of the last 2 episode of the series.
the show was no longer good anymore and this season was wastful and george was toned down and became freinds with tom and became a bit closer to florence where in one episode she was in his will.
The Show Last 3 years were the worst of the series and lasted 4 years too much.

I agree. As I understand it, they wanted both Rob Reiner and Sally Struthers to come back, but he opted not to. So they decided to write him out as having been divorced.

In hindsight, I think it would've been better to kill him off, but perhaps they wanted to leave the door open to have Mike return if Rob Reiner ever changed his mind. Since they had killed off Edith two seasons prior, perhaps they thought killing off yet another beloved character would be too much for the audience to handle. But at least then, we would've felt some loss at his passing. By having him desert his family, any affection for Mike would've disappeared at that point. And since both shows were cancelled one year later, they never had a chance to rectify the situation.

Either way, I wasn't comfortable with it either. It's changed how I see him in the repeats in a small way...

A commune is a small group of persons living together, sharing possessions, work, income, etc., and often pursuing unconventional lifestyles. Hope this helps...
