Tom Johnson -- could it be!!?

I should add that from reading his posts, he doesn't seem to be the type of maniac who would bash two people with hammers in a hotel room.

I really don't think it is that common. It sounds too much like a "made up" or a very "old" name. In fact, I would bet you really don't find too many people named "John Smith" or something similar anymore nowdays.

In any case, I would bet "Tom Johnson" is NOT the MAC Killer's real name. If it is, then I can't fathom him being able to escape justice all this time if he's that stupid.

I don't think he would be stupid if it's his real name. He would be playing right into the assumptions. Tom Johnson sounds so fake that it being real is almost unfathomable for a case like this. Thus, he is able to survive. However, I doubt it's real on the same grounds as everyone else.

I did and there were 6. Big deal. I still say it was a fake name; the same way if someone you introduced yourself to said their name was "John Smith" you would be kind of weirded out, because it sounds so fake.

There is no need for insults, maybe you and Shaggy can go toke on some kind and it will chill you out.

But seriously, if you click over to my site now, I wrote a post in response to seeing all the hits from here (and thanks!) There are a LOT of "Tom Johnsons" in the world and I posted links to a few of the easier to find ones.

So what was the crime anyway?

The crime itself is very grim. A computer salesman Jeremy was contacted by Tom Johnson as he was wanting to buy a $30,000 computer the company Jeremy worked for was trying to sell. They agreed to meet up in a motel room and Jeremy brought his fiancee Heather there on the long trip for company and to help keep him awake. Things appeared to be going well and Tom Johnson seemed to be cordial and friendly. Jeremy and Heather even loaded the computer in his car and Johnson said his boss would be there very soon with the check. Then Johnson pulls a gun on the couple. They offered absolutely no resistance but Johnson still beat them both severely with a hammer. Jeremy survived but Heather died later that day. Of course police don't think Tom Johnson was his real name.

Some of the more surreal aspects of this case (and of the UM re-enactment):

1) When Jeremy was about passed out (he drove over 20 hours to sell this MAC I wanna say), he asked "Tom" if they could "close the deal." Tom responded with, "I think we can close this deal RIGHT NOW!" and pulls out his gun.

2) The gun "Tom" is shown pulling is a Derringer. This is the same kind of gun that John Wilkes Booth used to shoot Lincoln BACK IN THE 1860's! Needless to say, it is not a very strong or intimidating weapon, especially to hold 2 people at bay with.

3) After pulling the gun, for some reason Tom decided to use a hammer to bludgeon Jeremy and Heather. I don't understand how you can beat one person with a hammer and have the other one not leave or run screaming for help.

4) Some woman went to the front desk before this was all going on and told the desk clerk that a disturbance was going on in the room "Tom Johnson" was renting.

the above reasons are why this case fascinates me. Too many odd things going on in this case. And that's saying a lot for Unsolved Mysteries.

I must agree with the others who have concluded that that Tom Johnson is not and could not be the type of Tom Johnson to pull off this awful crime,(and thank goodness for that:)) I'd like to thank him for stopping by to "protect" his reputation, if nothing less it is another way to raise awareness on this case.. who knows maybe one of his blog readers will know the real perp.

Righton, If I may address your points.

1. Any gun (and you should always assume every gun is loaded) can and will kill you, you can be killed just as easily by a one shot derringer as you can be killed by a 12 gauge shotgun.

2. Its amazing and sad what fear will do to people.. I encourage everyone to read Sanford Strong's book Strong on Defense, Strong a former police officer and contributor to AMW, gives real life examples of couples and families who became frozen by fear (not only of the perp, but of abandoning each other) and he addresses ways to over come it. Sadly there are a long list of victims who have had terrible things done to them and they were threatened with less intimidating things than a gun.


3. Bludgeoning with a hammer may have been thought by the perp to be quieter than firing a gun (perhaps he thought a heavy enough blow would knock them out but not kill them allowing him more time to escape). Recalling the case the victims were forced to roll their entire body in the bed sheets.... try it yourself , lay flat on the floor roll yourself in bed sheets and see if you can easily jump up and run out of the room, again I'm afraid that once the perp had forced them to roll into the blankets the chances of surviving his brutal attack was reduced significantly.

4. In the re-enactment it didn't exactly look like the Ritz-Carlton in Atlanata, it looked like the type of seedy joint where the clerk had probably heard one too many domestic arguements (I'm not excusing the clerks inaction), 911 operators are known to ignore such calls for help... "yeah yeah yeah I'll check it out and tell them to turn the music down"
