View Full Version : Air Conditioners, Fans - How do you stay cool indoors?

Yesterday, we put in the ACs and took out the fans. I can't live without AC in the summer. We've got a 10,000 btu AC in our living room. It will be on constantly. I love how it cools, but I hate the closed in feeling. I wish I had Central AC.
I've got a floor fan in that room for days that it's not too hot.
I don't like AC in the bedroom, so I have a fan on the bureau. We've got a smaller AC in the guest bedroom, where my husband is known to spend half the summer nights there to cool off, lol.

Oh God, here in Fla., I cannot imagine the summers here without central A/C, which I have. At night, I turn it up to about 80 and put my ceiling fan on when I'm sleeping.

Central AC... but my parents are cheap and it isn't on nearly enough. I pretty much always have my ceiling fan on high. I'm so used to being at school where I kept my room like an icebox. But now I'm back here and they throw a fit if I set it to come on at a lower temp.

central ac. I can't stand it being cold, though.
I still haven't dug the air conditioner out of the closet yet, but if the temp continues to rise I'll have to do it soon. My apartment (especially my room) is always hot, and when it's hot outside, it's like an oven inside.
Until I get off my lazy butt and put in the A/C, I have a small fan that sits on my desk that helps keep my room a little cooler.

Isn't it nice how our electric bills double in the summer? I wouldn't care if they quadrupled, I need to be cool in the summer.
New England summers are as brutal as New England winters.

Central AC, and a ceiling fan in the living room.

Both: I use the AC at night for sleeping and the fan during the day when i'm on the computer. I have a small room so my plastic fan keeps the room cool enough for me.

I just use a fan. I'm always hot, so I pretty much have it going year round.

So are Upper Midwest summers and winters. It's already 86 degrees right now, and it's supposed to crack 90 today.
To answer the question, central air. There's only one ceiling fan in the house, and it's located in the kitchen. If push comes to shove, I have a small floor fan -- it looks like it doesn't do much -- but when you plug it in, DAMN! It's awesome! It's a metal fan, I hate plastic fans, they don't do jack to keep you cool...so it's great. The bedrooms have VERY VERY VERY excellent floor vents, so they feel like iceboxes in the summertime, and it's awesome!

I don't understand what a Central A/C is. Yeah, I must be stupid.... But is it the one where there are wall switches where you turn on the pump first and then a while later turn the "on" switch? With the water swamp cooler?
Well, I always like to keep my bill as low as I can, especially now that I am living alone and pay for everything myself. I open my windows and partially close my venetian blinds as much as I can if it's warm. If it's a little warmer, then I will use a personal fan if I am especially sitting in one location for a while (i.e. sitting at my computer). If it's REALLY hot (almost to 100F/37C), then I will turn on the A/C for a while until I get cold and/or the apartment feels cool. Then I turn it off and turn it back on in intervals.

No, that's not what central AC is. It's an unit located next to your house, outdoors. It is hooked up to floor/ceiling vents in every room of your house for even distribution of air. It can be set up to distribute cool air in every room of the house in the summertime, and heat in the winter. Most people I know prefer central AC for that reason.

The best thing about central AC is that it's quiet. We've got regular ACs, and it sounds like we've got airplanes in our home all summer.

We have central AC, plus ceiling fans, and floor fans too. The AC doesn't do any good in our upstairs though. We have 2 bedrooms in our upstairs and a room inbetween which we called the "middle room". The middle room doesn't have any vents at all so it's always hot in there. We don't use that room for anything really, just to store crap and to walk through to get to the other bedrooms. The other rooms upstairs you need a fan because they're so hot. We have a black roof on our house so that might have something to do with it being so hot. The bad thing is it can get a little cold downstairs on the main level when we turn up the AC to keep it cool upstairs. Although that still doesn't help much! My dad finally gave up and plans on getting a room AC to put in the bedroom upstairs. Unfortunately it won't be my bedroom, but usually I can stand sleeping up there.

We have window AC's in all the bedrooms and in the computer room(which used to be my son's bedroom). There is a fan in every room of my house. I even run a fan in my bedroom all year round. The humming helps me sleep.:sleep2: Can't sleep without the gentle hum of my AC or my fan:crazy:

Swamp coolers are used in dry climates to cool houses with water. Central air removes water from the air in high humidity areas.

To stay cool indoors:
I usually break out the full length mirror, get myself ready, and gaze at that fellow in the looking glas---
umm,
Central air.

I prefer fans over air conditioners. I love the heat even though I complain about sweating, but I wouldn't have it any other way. I like a fresh breeze in the house and I hate the almost fake scent of air conditioned air. Screw that. http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v206/StormtrackerTF/THATSAWESOME.gif

Lucky. My dorm had no AC and my room was on the top floor. We had like 6 fans in that small room.
Anyway, at home, we have AC, but it gets turned on only when it gets to be really humid, because my mom isn't a huge AC fan. Me on the other hand, I like COLD. I can't sleep if I'm hot. Plus my allergies are always better in air conditioning. Unfortunately when the people put this central air in, they didn't put enough vents in the upstairs (in fact there isn't even one in my bathroom) and even with the air on, my bedroom gets hot. Fans are a total necessity.

I remmeber in our old house, we had a window air unit and I always had to turn the TV up way high. But that thing was NOT going off.
Dumb thing was, that house had central ac, but one vent for the entire living room, and the vent in the bedroom...the genius that put in the built-in waterbed put the bed right over the vent. So we had to have a window unit.

Same here. Counting the days until I hopefully (Finally) get to move into the apartment.

We have a giant A/C, a small one, and several fans. It helps keep the air down a little lower at times.
Unfortunately, there's no Central A/C.

AC definately! Fans are okay when the house is nice and cool or when the house is at a decent temperature (depending on the person) but once it becomes extremely hot and muggy outside, the fans are useless.

Thankfully, the air conditioning in my house is working again. It conked out on Friday, the hottest day of the year so far! Of course, no one was available to repair it until today, because of the holiday weekend! I'm just glad the air is on again!!!
