I was reading that some professors have started banning LAPTOPS from classes because they are fed up distractions. I never saw the point of a laptop in class anyway, you can take notes by writing them instead of typing. They said that one student was actually playing poker in class and had the look like he was taking notes-lol I think LAPTOPS should be banned

DEPENDS on the CLASS. If its a math class then *no but a lecture class then yes. Some people can't even read their own handwriting, it's much easier to organize notes on the computer.

Well I can see having it be a rule in high school, but if you're in college then really, you're an adult and you should be there because you want to be.

College is the time when you quit having to ask before you leave for the bathroom, don't have to have somebody call you in because you're sick, etc.

If someone is going to be using a laptop, then they should be using it sensibly since they're an adult, and if not...well then, the bad grade they wind up with at the end of the semester will just be their own fault.

How does C-Print work? (http://www.ntid.rit.edu/cprint/how_cprint.php)

A trained operator, called a C-Print captionist, produces text of the spoken information using a software application called C-Print Pro. The captionist is skilled in text-condensing strategies and in typing using an abbreviation system, which reduces keystrokes. The text can be displayed simultaneously to one or more students in different ways, including additional computers (laptops) or display monitors. The captionist includes as much information as possible, generally providing a meaning-for-meaning (not verbatim) translation of the spoken English content.

C-Print Pro software is specifically designed for providing C-Print speech-to-text services, and allows the captionist to input text using a keyboard abbreviation system and/or voice. After class, the text can be provided in paper or electronic format for the student to use as notes.

In addition, the system's developers have implemented notetaking tools intended to enhance the educational experience for students, both in the classroom and during study time. The notetaking tools are available when a student has access to a second laptop. As previously mentioned, there are two methods for inputting text - a keyboard abbreviation system and voice. The abbreviation system is based on phonetics, or how words sound. Although spelling-based abbreviations might seem easier to learn, in practice, abbreviations based on how words sound are more instinctive. Unlike traditional keyboard typing, a C-Print captionist processes information auditorily. Typing using abbreviations based on how words sound is an extension of the auditory process. In addition, problematic spelling is not an issue.

So....ummmmm....laptops are NECESSARY for some people...

I don't necessarily think so. I mean, what's to show off? If I see somebody with one, I either think "Oh look. A laptop." or, more often than not, I really don't think anything about it at all.

I never see them and get filled with envy, thinking to myself "OH MY GOD HOW DARE HE HAVE A LAPTOP IN HERE?! HE'S JUST TRYING TO SHOW OFF! DAMNIT!!"

For my big lectures, like Modern History I would bring one, and I'd take like two pages of notes, I found it helpful when making a study guide for my mid-term, I could just copy and paste notes and make a study guide...and I did have wireless on it, and I had aim open, but I didnt talk much to my friends because otherwise I would miss important notes...soo I dont see the issue, but I mean in intimate classes I dont see the point

I would never take my laptop to class because I know I would get distracted by the Internet and not pay attention to the lecture. It doesn't bother me when other people bring their laptops because it's a very select few and in some classes no one at all.

OMG, I had someone that was always bringing one to class and screwing around on it, it drove everyone nuts! In our major, participation is a big part of the grade and he was never paying attention, Our class sizes were only 30-45 people. The only reason I could see to bring one is if it is a lecture class where you have to take a lot of notes.

And I bet some college kids are STUPID ENOUGH to bring their laptop to Class and SIT IN THE BACK to make it obvious they are not doing sh*T-lol

I could understand the instructors' reasoning for distractions on laptops if there was a nearby wireless access point where the student is surfing online. It's rude to do that while the instructor is lecturing.

It also depends on if it's a computer-related class or just a non-computer classroom.

Besides people who need them (as mentioned above), people who take laptops to class are usually geeks. What's really popular in my campus are those Pocket PC's with the foldable keyboards.

Not to be confused with SBTB geeks, by the way.

I think lab tops should be allowed. They can help people to take notes faster and it makes it so they can read their notes. Some people may use their internets but by the time they get to college they should have their own choice.

I completely agree. It would be alot easier to take notes by computer than by writing, I can type alot faster than I can write by hand.

Well I doubt if the typing has anything to do with note taking.

I just think it's a little extreme. Just take by writing and save the Laptop for the Library
