Stupid question but i have no idea...

In the bigger cities such as LA after the zip like [this is totally made up>]99999-9999 it has like 3 or 4 more numbers after the dash.

What is that for? Just wondering and i have no idea.

All cities have that...
if follows the zip code so that the post office can determine which mailman should take the letter. Some people say that if you include it on a letter, it will go through faster, but I have no clue..
