LOS ANGELES (AP) - Johnny Depp has the write stuff when it comes to signing autographs while Cameron Diaz is the worst, according to a new list Friday from Autograph Collector magazine.
Depp, followed by George Clooney, topped the magazine's 14th annual survey of Hollywood's best and worst signers. The "Pirates of the Caribbean" star also was rated best last year.
"Many stars become bad signers once fame and fortune hits, but not Depp. He's even signed autographs for crowds at the airport while carrying luggage," said Steve Cyrkin, editor and publisher of the Santa Ana, Calif.-based magazine.
As for Clooney, "he'll joke as he signs, and make fun of how he looks in photos he's handed to autograph," Cyrkin said.
When it comes to her moniker, however, Diaz gets a flunking grade.
"Cameron Diaz may be a talented actress, but she's persistently a terrible signer. Instead of just turning down a person's autograph request, she'll lecture them about how dumb autographs are," Cyrkin said.
Russell Crowe would have been named as the best of the worst but in recent months he has been much nicer to fans, Cyrkin said in a telephone interview Friday.
Cyrkin said the list, which appears in the magazine's June issue, was based on information from a professional autograph collector and an enthusiastic amateur who is a journalist.
"They're the guys who want to get five or 10 or 12 of everything but they do see people" and know the "track records" of the stars, he said.
"It's looking at the spirit of the way they sign," Cyrkin said. "It's how they treat their fans."
Here is the list of 10 best and 10 worst Hollywood autograph signers for 2006, according to the magazine:
Best
1. Johnny Depp
2. George Clooney
3. Matt Damon
4. Al Pacino
5. Tom Cruise
6. Angelina Jolie
7. Elijah Wood
8. Brittany Murphy
9. Jack Nicholson
10. Clint Eastwood
Worst

2. Bruce Willis
3. Demi Moore
4. Tobey Maguire
5. Alan Alda
6. Halle Berry
7. Winona Ryder

OMG, Halle Berry is on there!! This is so funny.
The reason I say that is because my fiancee told me this story before, about how her sister and her sister's friend were at a hotel once a couple of years ago (some really nice place) and Halle Berry was actually staying at the same hotel. They saw her laying out by the pool, and so once they got up the nerve, they went over and tried to talk to her.
They told her about how they thought she was so beautiful and such a wonderful actress, and then finally they asked for her autograph. So then, Halle sits up, raises her sunglasses, looks at them and goes "Hmm...lemme think about that...yeah, you know what? No, sorry, no I really don't think so" in an EXTREMELY rude tone.
Then, to top it off, she just turned over in her lounge chair onto her stomach and resumed ignoring the two of them.

Famous people get so much money for doing nothing and so many free benefits, they damn well should sign frickin' autographs for God's sake!!!
They wouldn't be famous if they didn't have fans, helloooooooooooo.

Well now I don't know if I'd go that far.
If it was that easy, we'd all be famous.
While I do agree they should be good to their fans and remember who helped put them there, I wouldn't go as far as to say that they just easily breeze through life by doing nothing and live happily ever after.

Well, you know what I mean, getting millions for a movie that takes a year to make? They are in the right place at the right time or have relatives in the business. There are millions of other people in the world just as talented.

Yeah but now in return for those millions, you're on the cover of every magazine and every tabloid in the country (or the WORLD) and you have so many people just rooting for your marriage to fail or for you to fall right on your ass somewhere along the way in the middle of your career, just because the media is obsessed with misery.

my boyfriend got Barbra Streisand's autograph last week for me at his job. He knows how much i love Babs. He loved her in Meeting the Fockers. Anyways, he says she was sweet as sugar, she was very nice, very cordial and she told him how NICE HE WAS and thanked him for helping her.
I HATE CAMERON DIAZ. She is a B*tch. She can't act and why is she looked upon as this great actress anyways?????

I'm not trying to argue, lol, but, these people can get out of the "limelight" anytime they want and take their money and go live a quiet life. And, when they do have problems, it's usually because they do something totally asinine and stupid. They know what they're sigining up for when they become famous. I'm just saying, it's a lot easier than being your average joe/jane and working for a living.

I'm not surprised to see Alan Alda on the worst signers list. I wrote to him about a year ago, and I got a crappy preprint (a preprint is where they print the signature ON the picture). I also got a flyer about his book. Um, no thanks, Alda. I'll just write to somebody else who cares about their fans enough to actually SIGN the pictures they send out.

Oh god, I hate her too!
Anyway, I can't stand when celebrities are rude to their fans. I am not saying they should totally sacrifice their private lives for the sake of a picture or autograph, but I think that showing respect for the people that love them and are essentially keeping them in business, means that they are still human (nice, approachable, and above all GRATEFUL for their fans).
As soon as I find out that a celebrity is nasty to their fans (or even the people they work for), I usually lose interest really quick.

I wonder how much of Johnny Depp's "niceness" stems from his former negative statement abt the United States. I can't recall the exact word, but he said something real bad abt us and he got real bad press abt it. Does this autograph thingy have anything to do with him trying to "make-up" for that statement?
Also, Winona Ryder used to be engaged to Johnny Depp and she is on the worst list.

Seems like bands are generally more approachable to get autographs from than actors/actresses. I haven't had a bad experience w/asking for a band member's signature yet.

Winona's excuse is that she only signs for kids. As if kids these days really know, or care who she is.
