Someone you knew online, asked what your last name was? But you've known this person for a few years.....cause I'm having that problem right now. There's this girl I ment online, who's 17, I met her on an American Juniors message board on AOL about 3 years ago.
I KNOW she's not a stalker or anything because I've talked to her on the phone many times before and she seems like she's 17, like she says she is.....but I can't give out my last name because it's still dangerous and I'm not suppose to!

Um, is your name an uncommon last name? Because my name is a common first name and a common last name. You can find a Janice Johnson anywhere. Maybe your name is not uncommon and only your family has that last name. it depends on how common or uncommon your last name is.

I'd stop talking to that person right away, doesn't seem really safe to talk to someone who wants personal information, she might be a phisher or worse.

What's a phisher?
A phisher is someone who gets your information from websites and then steals your identity and takes money out of your bank accounts. It's easy to fall for a phisher because the put up real-looking fake links in your email to banks and stuff like that. It might say something like,"GirlMeetsWorld!" You forgot to make a Bank Of America bank payment! Open now! " When you open it, they ask you for your bank account number and Pin Number, and if you give it to them, they will take your money out of your bank and ruin your credit report............ These people are scammers, and to be safe, you need to personally type in the link to BOA(because you will go to a real BOA website), and not follow the link they give you......................

There are map sites that give exact directions to people's houses if you have the first and last name.

I'm sure she's just asking out of curiosity but just to be on the safe side I wouldn't give it to her, especially if you're not even supposed to be talking to her. You give out your personal info and something bad happens, you'll be in a whole slew of trouble.
I've given out my name and address to a few people online, even a couple people here have it but it was just so they could send me tapes and stuff. I'd like to think that most people online are good people but you never know.

I wouldnt. Both my first and last name arent all that common, so I hardly ever even give out my first name unless I've talked to them for some time and they're not creepy or anything. But thats just me. I'm always paranoid.

Because it's known to be unsafe, just don't do it.
But I myself have a question. How is it different giving your last name on the internet than in real life? Like, for example, creepy school teachers know your last name, and not be a very good person despite their job. Wouldn't that be just as bad? I mean I just don't see why the internet is made out to be more of a risk than real life.

I agree. I wouldn't give out your last name - whether it's common or not. Like Mijada said, this girl may have just been curious, but still.... It's not very safe.
The spelling on my last name was altered, so my sister and I are basically the first generation who will be using the unique spelling. Therefore, our last name can easily be found using Google or the White Pages. I wouldn't want that to happen.

On the internet you never really know who you're talking to unless you meet them in person and get to know them that way. "Girl Meets World" (Sorry I forgot her name) doesn't really even know that this girl is 17 or what she looks like, where she goes to school, where she works etc.. All she knows is what this girl tells her on the phone. Like I said before the girl is probably harmless but why take an unneccesary chance? At least with teachers we can see what they look like and we know what they do for a living. Some teachers are creepy but we don't have a choice but to give them our full name because they need it for their records. It doesn't make sense to make the risk even greater by giving your name out to someone online when they don't even have a legit reason for wanting it.

if you feel any hint of uncertainty, and i'm assuming by you making this post you are, I would't do it. If she's a true friend, she'll backoff and understand.

Chances are if she has your phone number, she can already find out your last name on the internet using a reverse phone directory or something like it. So it's too late to really keep it from her if she really wanted to know.
If that was me, I would have mentioned my last name way before ever giving out my phone number. But again, like I said above, just a name or number can help you figure out anything else you want to know about a person.

Agreed. I suppose everyone I went to school with has just as much of a chance at snatching my identity as anyone on the internet does!
But seriously, people always say "you don't know who you're talking to"...but guess what? Just because you see someone with your own eyes doesn't automatically make them good or bad. Just because you see someone, you can't go "Oh, gee, it really IS a 17 year old girl! All is well in the world now, because she wouldn't ever possibly do anything to me, since I see her with my own eyes and all."
Like they always say...Ted Bundy looked like a nice guy, so did that make him safer than 90% of the people you'll meet online?

This kind of reminds me of when I confessed to being a multiple personality at that other board, this girl who had fallen in love with my Male MP PM'd me and asked me if I would give the MP's password to her. I was thinking, "SECURITY!"  She wanted me to give her the password to the MP(whose account was still active until I deleted the account) Needless to say, I didn;t give her the password. I shudder to think what she would have done with the password. But ironically, she is currently my only friend at that board and has almost always been my friend.......................:( :D The crazy girl who wanted the password is now my only friend there. Ironic, isn't it?

I have online friends who I've known about as long as you Niki, and I know some of their last names and I don't know others. And vice versa. I guess I don't see what the big deal with knowing someone's last name is anyway. Just tell this girl you're not comfy giving your name out, and if she doesn't understand that, then she's not much of a friend.

I've thought about that too. Same with signing credit card receipts, giving out your phone number, etc. You're better off going thru life paying cash and living under an alias.

Yes. Took the words right out of my mouth. It's no different in seeing a person or not seeing them with your eyes in judging who they are.

That's what I think. Just because you know someone in real life, doesn't necessarily mean you "know" them. Plenty of people have been deceived by people in real life, so to me, I don't see where the internet is much worse.

it really bothers me when people make the internet out to be more dangerous than it is. my mom always says "you don't know who the hell you're talking to online, someone who claims to be a 12 year old boy could be a 40 year old woman" and all that. but just because you know someone in "real life" doesn't make the situation any safer, it actually makes it more dangerous if you ask me.

I am going to have to disagree with you here, Cindy. I think that it is much easier to be deceived on the internet then in real. Sadly, I have first hand experience. :(

I've been screwed over, so to speak, by more people I knew in real life than any creepy person I've seen online. People may not necessarily be able to fake their age or something offline, but they can lie just as well when they're looking at you. Probably easier too.
