In the 1965-1966 season, the only shows in black and white were: The Donna Reed Show, Mister Ed, The Dick Van Dyke Show, McHale's Navy, The Patty Duke Show, Bewitched, The Addams Family, The Munsters and I Dream of Jeannie. The only shows to come back for the next season were Bewitched and I Dream of Jeannie. Both shows changed to color.

I believe that's the reason The Munsters and maybe The Addams Family were cancelled. They didn't want to go into color. I know The Dick Van Dyke Show went out on it's own.

This live domestic comedy focused on newlyweds, Mary Kay and Johnny Stearns. They lived in an apartment in Greenwich Village. Mary Kay was "pretty, pert and something of a screwball, while he was more serious and always getting her out of various dilemmas." Johnny worked at a bank. Howie was Johnny's best friend, while Mary Kay's mother showed up, quite a bit. The couple had a son, in real life, in December of 1948. He was added to the cast after a few months. Sadly, due to ignorance, this show was not filmed and none of the episodes exist today.

The Goldbergs were a middle-class Jewish family who lived in Apartment 3B at 1030 East Tremont Avenue in the Bronx. Molly was the star of the show. Her husband, Jake was in the clothing business. Sammy and Rosalie were the couples' teenagers. Molly was a housewife and loved to gossip with her neighbors. Uncle David, an educated and philosophical man, lived with the Goldbergs. "Molly was a good soul and was constantly involved in trying to help everybody in the neighborhood solve their problems."

"The program ended it's CBS run in 1951 under a cloud of controversy. Principal Philip Loeb had been blacklisted for alleged left-wing sympathies, causing sponsor General Foods to drop the series. Mrs. Berg fought to keep him, but to no avail - nervous sponsor and network executives said that either Loeb went or The Goldbergs would never be seen again. Thus, when the series reappeared in 1952, it was without Loeb." Sady, Loeb's career was destroyed. In 1955, Philip Loeb, in a hotel room, took a fatal overdoes of sleeping pills.

In the fall of 1955, the series returned for a filmed season for syndication. In the new season, the Goldbergs moved from the Bronx to the suburban community of Haverville. Sammy's fiancee and later wife, Dora joined the show, as did her mother. Molly's new neighbors were the Careys.

Henry's best friend, Homer Brown was even played by three different actors. The only staple in the series was House Jameson, who played Henry's long-suffering father.

Gillis was Riley's sarcastic friend and Digger was the smiling undertaker. "Jackie Gleason's bug-eyed portrayal of Riley did not catch on, and the program was canceled after only one season. It would come back, however, in 1953. The new series starred William Bendix as the main character. Bendix had played the role in the radio show, but had other commitments and couldn't do the original show in 1949.

I would say, without any doubt, that this was the best year for sitcoms of all time. Take a good look at that list again. Not a weak link in the bunch, except for a few of the Season 1s.

If I remember correctly The Joey Bishop Show is the only show in TV history that started out in black and white, switched to colour in the middle of its run, and then went back to black and white for its final season. Just a little historical TV trivia for you!:wave:

I've never seen sitcoms listed in this way before. It's pretty cool to pick a year and see what shows were in which season...

1966 was a great year, like you said... there was a great overlap between many of the great established shows and a number of first year "future classics".
