View Full Version : Why does TV Land and Nick at Nite suck so bad?

Nick at Nite was started on the idea of showing great old shows that had had little or no syndication in recent years. Shows like Donna Reed, which had not aired anywhere in many years, Route 66, Smothers Brothers Show (sitcom), Patty Duke, Dobie Gillis, Ann Sothern, etc. TV Land, started out running tons of great shows which also had not been run anywhere, many of them seeing the light of day for the first time since being on the network (Joey Bishop Show, Coronet Blue, Young Lawyers, Shane, Longstreet, etc.) Now both networks are worse than oldies radio, only showing the most popular and best known 1% of old shows. And Nick doesn't even run old shows, just 80s and 90s crap, which isn't old. VCRs came out in the late 70s. Anyone who wanted to see Cosby or any of that other stuff again could have taped it when it ran originally. Not so with shows from the 50s, 60s and 70s. I can understand them wanting to cultivate some younger viewers, those who might be turned off by shows that aren't in color. But why can't TV Land for instance put aside a few hours a week to air shows that are not the same common crap that's aired non-stop for decades?

I agree that TV Land should go back and air shows that aren't on TV as much. They should have a variety from all the decades. I'm just sad I didn't have TV Land when they aired some of those shows.

its that darn 18-49 demographics or what ever it is. I for one would love to see shows that are rarely re ran. Car 54, The Fugitive, and a lot of others. I got to admit though, I do watch a lot of TV Land anyway. They may be re ran a lot but most of them are still good shows.

Yea its not that the shows aren't good. A lot of them are classics. I just wish they'd have some variety and put some shows on that haven't been in syndication in years. I regret I didn't have TV Land when Maude and Chico And The Man was on. The Fugitive is a great show. I watched that when it was on A&E. I would love to see The Defenders or some other dramas from the 50's and 60's air. How about some old sitcoms like December Bride and Topper?

What ticks me off is that N@N and TV Land have their highest ratings now. So they're all cocky thinking they have a great channel. But I'm with you. I want the rare classics. In fact, although (to me) Nick at Nite was still at it's peak, once "I Love Lucy" came on, they started airing the more well known classics and then moved into the 80's and 90's.

In fact, "I Love Lucy" was the first N@N show that I watched on N@N and then was able to turn to another channel (some FOX affiliate) and watch another episode of it, back to back. Now, that's a very common thing with Full House and Roseanne.

I think N@N should stick with the rare classics of the 50's, 60's and 70's. They could change their schedule around, but never move into the 80'. The 1990's are still way too new for both channels. They should air on TBS or USA or Comedy Central. As for the 1980's they could finda way to their own channel as well.

I think there's a big audience and a lot of money to be made if someone had a channel than ran all the true vintage shows. I'm surprised nobody has done that.

Maybe they should make a TVLand 2.

N@N and Tvland have to do something about their show choice. I would love it if they would bring back some of the older shows to both Networks. I wish I had TVland when they played some of the older shows. Older sitcoms are so much better then some of the garbage that they play now.

You know I like the shows they have on NAN now: Cosby Show, RoseAnne, Full House, Fresh Prince BUT I do have to say I'm getting tired of seeing them all the time!!! I would LOVE to see shows like Family Ties, Growing Pains, Benson, Gimme A Break, Silver Spoons, The Jeffersons etc on just for a change of pace. :)

Nick also used to only run shows that they had exclusive contracts on. If they ran them, no one else in the US could. That obviously has gone out the window.

I have no desire to ever watch any of these shows. They are all way too new and way too common. TV Land needs to address the fact that there is more to TV than such a small sampling of shows. It's too bad they were good when no one could get them. Success breeds mediocrity.

Unfortunately that's happened with a lot of channels...AMC and GSN for one. They just aren't what they used to be.

That's actually a good thing. Their's more to classic tv besides sitcoms. They should show different drama and variety shows from different decades too.

Well what about N@N?Why does Full House & Cosby have to be on N@N when they are on in the day time, especially Full House because it's on four times on ABC Family

I wish networks like TVLand and GSN would just realize that they just arent made for 18-49 demographics (I mean young people watch these shows but apparently not a landslide)... though GSN runs their oldies better than TVLand now than compared to two years ago. TVLand should air different varities of shows from all decades.

I dont mind having a show be on one local station and ONE cable channel because some people dont have cable, but two or three cable channels are ridiculous. There are other shows that are in the vault that should have some air time that havent been seen in years.

The problem with Nick At Nite and TVLand is that they both seem to cater to audiences between the ages of 18 to 49 years old. Well im sorry, you have people in their 50s, 60s, 70s, and 80s that would like to see old TV shows and depend on these two channels to bring them these old TV shows. Both channels need to stop airing reality shows. Come on, these channels are supposed to be airing classic TV shows, NOT reality shows that are so stupid, dumb, and retarded. The worst was "Chasing Farrah" on TVLand. It was a waste of time watching Farrah Fawcett for a half hour making an idiot out of herself. The second worst was "Sitdown Comedy With David Steinberg" on TVLand. David Steinberg hardly ever talked to his guests and made an idiot out of himself sitting there with a stupid smile on his face and his stupid laugh. He looked like a retard. There was no need for this talk show on TVLand when these comedians could of went on regular late night talk shows to talk about the same things they talked about on this show. Also, Nick At Nite should not be airing 90s shows. Shows from the 90s belong on other cable channels like TBS, Lifetime, ABC Family, and other cable channels, NOT Nick At Nite. The way it looks these days, Nick At Nite and TVLand are aiming lower not higher. I also think it was wrong of TVLand not to do any kind of special 48 hour marathon weekend of most of the shows they aired for the past 10 years or some kind of special marathon for a few nights of most of the shows they aired for the past 10 years to celebrate their 10th anniversary.

Both channels should be airing mostly 50s and 60s shows with a little bit of 70s and 80s shows mixed in. I would say like 20 percent of 70s shows and 10 percent of 80s shows. In my opinion for Nick At Nite, I would say the only 80s shows that would be appropriate for them to air would be "Perfect Strangers" and "Alf". They could air at 8:00pm and 8:30pm since they are both family oriented shows and the rest of the night from 9:00pm to overnight till 6:00am would be dedicated to mostly 50s and 60s shows with a few 70s shows mixed in. In my opinion for TVLand, I would say the only 80s shows that would be appropriate for them to air would be "The A-Team" and "Miami Vice". TVLand used to air dramas at 12Midnight so I would say air "The A-Team" at 12Midnight and air "The A-Team" and "Miami Vice" in a TVLand Crimestoppers programming block back to back from 1:00pm to 3:00pm. This would mean air "The A-Team" at 1:00pm and air "Miami Vice" at 2:00pm. The rest of the channel would be dedicated to mostly 50s and 60s shows with a few 70s shows mixed in.

Nick At Nite should get rid of as soon as possible permanently "The Cosby Show" and "Roseanne". They are two of the worst shows in all of television.

TVLand should get rid of these seven shows as soon as possible permanently. They are the worst shows in all of television and six of them have been rerun to death by TVLand. I would NEVER own these shows on DVD and if I ran TVLand, I would not acquire or air these seven shows on the schedule.

Gunsmoke
Leave It To Beaver
Bonanza
The Andy Griffith Show
The Brady Bunch
Good Times
Highway To Heaven

TVLand also needs to get rid of their reality shows.

AMEN, MICHAEL!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I TOTALLY agree with you!! I think it should be like this:

TV Land (50s and 60s, some 70s, maybe a drama and a sitcom from the 80s)
Nick@Nite (70s and 80s)

TV Land has really declined. I got to the point in December that I quit watching it I got so sick of that David Steinberg stuff. The ONLY decent one was Bob Newhart! Same goes for that stupid Farrah Fawcett show. How about airing an episode of Charlie's Angels instead? And let's not forget ALF's Talkshow. I mean, I don't want to sit and watch a stuffed animal interviewing people. I'm sorry, the show was good, but the TV Land Talkshow was awful. What happened to the classics of the 50s and 60s TV Land used to be famous for? I remember TwiceAsNice that used to run in the afternoons from 3pm-8pm (sometimes 2pm-8pm), which consisted of mainly 50s and 60s shows. They had a SOLID primetime lineup in 2002: The Love Boat, I Love Lucy, The Munsters, Andy Griffith, Leave it to Beaver, The Beverly Hillbillies, and Gilligan's Island - in that order. Maybe there were a couple of late 70s/80s shows latenight (Taxi, at one point WKRP). They had The Kitschen (which was great), Box Sets, Sunday Bests, Better Living Through Television, etc....Slowly, in 2003, they started adding stuff like Fantasy Island, MacGyver, and Sanford and Son...Then in 2004, Hunter....and Wings/Cheers/Family Ties/Kids Say... moved from Nick@Nite. 2005 brought Night Court, Highway to Heaven, and What's Happening. Now, fast foward from 2002 to 2006; and what do we have? Only ONE 50s/60s show in primetime, NONE overnights, and NONE during the evening (6pm-8pm). No 50s/60s shows added since July, 2004. We've only seen MORE 70s/80s shows come and our beloved 50s/60s classics being taken away. And with Bewitched and Jeannie leaving, and Benson coming in June, two less 50s/60s shows and one more 80s show. I don't have a problem with any of these shows, I just think there are more appropriate networks for them to air on. Even though they don't say so, I have a feeling that TVL is slowly removing the pre-1970s shows from the lineup. It's pretty obvious. If they are doing that, I just hope some other network will pop up and bring us the great shows that TV Land has removed.

Sorry to ramble.

Not to me it doesn't. More like 18-35, like every other network. I'm 48 and the only time I watch them is when I'm on a plane (Jet Blue). Otherwise, there's nothing they show that I'm interested in that I don't have on tape or DVD. It's been so long since I've even bothered to check their schedule, but going by what I remember:

The Munsters - all out on DVD
All in the Family - most on DVD, should all come out at some point
Good Times - all but last season on DVD
Sanford and Son - all on DVD
What's Happening - all on DVD
Leave it to Beaver - coming out slowly
Andy Griffith - up to 6th season soon

So, who cares about seeing shows cut to 22 minutes that you can buy cheaply complete? There are tons of 1 season or less shows that are excellent. Too bad TV Crapland will never air them.

Of course, TVLand and N@N doesn't care about one person's opinions. However, this messageboard allows us to vent our anger at whatever. This messageboard is also a place for us to give our opinions.

I agree with those who think TVLand should go to 1950's, 60's and a little 70's with sitcoms and drama. And that N@N should show sitcoms of the 1970's and 80's. The 1990's have some great sitcoms (a few of my all-time favorites), but they can be on some other channel for a while.

The main problem is that TVLand and N@N are getting their highest ratings ever now. So they won't change back. Which is sad. I grew up watching the old time shows on N@N. Unless all of those old shows come to DVD, my kids won't get to see the shows that make our current shows possible. Even if they do come to DVD, there's nothing like watching them on Nick at Nite.

Their catering to their 18-49 demographics is just absurd. The fact they're getting a lot of these viewers isn't necessarily a sign that what they're programming is more what these people want to see. It's that people in this demographic drink what's given to them constantly without knowing there's better variety of water out there.

Then again, I'm 18 now and grew up when Nick at Night was at its peak. I watched (I rarely slept when I was little) and loved all those great shows and would love to see more obscure programming and things that haven't been re-aired in ages. Some of them are available via DVD like Mary Tyler Moore or Dick Van Dyke, but not all of them. Oh well.
