Looks like ABC has the new DWTS.

The debut of "American Inventor" scored a surprisingly robust 8.4/14 for ABC at 8 p.m. CBS' coverage of the NCAA men's basketball tournament was second at 6.8/11. NBC took third with "Will & Grace," 6.2/10, and "Four Kings," 4.6/7. "That '70s Show," 3.6/6, and "The Loop," 3.0/5, put FOX in fourth. A "Smallville" rerun on The WB edged repeats of "Everybody Hates Chris" and "Love, Inc." on UPN.

At 9 p.m., "American Inventor" built on its first hour, averaging 9.2/15. CBS improved to 8.1/13 with more basketball. "My Name Is Earl," 6.7/10, and "The Office," 5.7/9, kept NBC in third. "The O.C." scored a 3.7/6 for FOX. "Supernatural" kept The WB ahead of UPN, which went with repeats of "Eve" and "Cuts."

I think ABC should go this way Thursdays in the fall:

8:00pm Dancing with the Stars 90 min
9:30pm American Inventor 90 min

or

8:00pm Dancing with the Stars
9:00pm American Inventor
10:00pm New Drama

I like the second idea better, but Dancing will almost certainly be an hour and a half or maybe even 2 hours, and I don't think Inventor should air any later than 9-10pm. It's a good family show and defintely should air at 8 or 9, so I was thinking do Dancing for half the season and Inventor for the other half, that way, neither show is overexposed. Primetime does need to go though, or be limited to specials.

“American Inventor” exhibited broad demographic appeal, also winning its time slot among Adults 25-54 (6.2/15), Adults 18-34 (4.3/13), Teens 12-17 (2.7/9) and Kids 2-11 (2.3/8). The ABC unscripted program saw its audience build substantially from its first half-hour to its final half-hour, growing by 2.6 million viewers (12.7 million to 15.3 million) and by 44% in Adults 18-49 (4.3/13 to 6.2/16).
